Text from Pages 1 - 112 of the 1962 volume:

WILBY ALMA MATER When we but hear the name of Wilby We will rise and pledge anew The measure of all our hearts devotion To her we will still be true. We cannot refuse her when she calls us To work or play or sing; We'll do our best whate’er befalls us And honor to Wilby bring. Then raise your voice for Wilby, Let her name and her fame be known. For her we stand and now each hand For her shall be proudly shown. Fair Play is still our moto, May the best man win the game. And so we're proud to shout aloud The WILBY name. s DEDICATION MR. GEORGE V. GRADY We of the class of 1962 take pride in dedicating our dassbook to George V. Grady, teacher of English at Wilby for over a quarter of a century. A gentle, yet persuasive master, he made literature spring to life for us and under him, whether smiles were to be moved or tears, we reveled in the glories of the Great Books. His classes were more than interesting in an atmosphere of occasional fun and frolic. Mr. Grady and his devoted wife have traveled all over this country and extensively in Europe. He has a great fondness for Italy, and often confided to us that he left part of his heart in Venice and threw coins in the Trevi Fountain in Rome so that some day he might return to the Eternal City. Patience, tolerance and understanding are but a few of his qualities. We have often been heartened by his contention that what young people need are models, not critics. Never,” he says, have I ever encountered a real bad teenager.” We are grateful for the privilege of ennobling our yearbook with a salute to this scholarly gentleman. 3 JOSEPH R. The team presented gifts to the coaches, Mr. O’Brien, Mr. Dubuque, and Mr. Kelley for the whole-hearted attention they showed to each player during the season. BASKETBALL This past year, the 1961-1962 basketball team had a successful season of 13 wins and 4 losses to qualify for a tournament berth. Co-captain Robert Brown, playing his last year of high school basketball, scored 417 points during the regular season. Brown, as a senior, made the all-city and all- Valley teams. Brown’s team-mate. Art Moore, completed a good season after a slow start. Art, who is a very capable ball handler, was also elected to the all-city team and will be back for Coach Evan’s line-up next year. These two boys did much to make Wilby’s basketball season a successful one. 74 76 STARTING FROM FRONT ROW, LEFT TO RIGHT: Jim Depaulo, Jim Diorio, Phil Noble, George Selce, Wayne Laraway—Captain, Jim Vander Eyk, Neil Walsh, A1 Sweeney, Phil Keane, Clayton Bowen, Dave Bozzuto, Pete Ouimet, Roger Rovaro—Manager, Tom Blinstrubas, Bob Donahue, Greg Nolan, Steve Volario, Nick Benevento, Arthur Shattuck, Bill Griuickis, Ned Vallett, Joe Petutonus, John Ziemer. SWIMMING TEAM Coach Fred O’Brien and his Wilby tankers had their troubles all season. Manned by only two seniors, George Selee and Jim VanderEyk, and the balance underclassmen, the team was unsuccessful in attain- ing a victory in fourteen starts. Captained by Wayne Laraway, the team improved with every meet. Its best meets were hard fought against—Bristol Central (551 -331 ), Wilbur Cross (48-39), and Croft (48-39). BASEBALL We, as Seniors, were not happy with the final outcome of our baseball season. But we realized that our team was made up of Freshmen and Sophomores and was not experienced. Our coach, Mr. William Evans, was desirous of building a new team which would produce a winner for Wilby within a few years. We are confident that he will be successful and we know that our team will eventually add to the glory of Wilby. Dave Bozzuto and Russell Bain are numbered among the aggressive members of the team. They were most loyal and their efforts will be rewarded in the coming years. Bob Hartnett also made a commendable effort. The class of 1962 salutes these boys. During our first weeks of high school, when we inquired of our dis- dainful seniors how to locate a certain room, we be- came easy prey for those who sold us rides to the third floor on one of the new elevators which had been in- stalled during the summer months, or for those who sent us up those long stairs that led to the roof. The beginning of our first high school year brought many improvements to Wilby. It was the first time in forty-one years that our school had a complete renova- tion. Repairs were made throughout the entire building from the basement to the roof. Other changes also took place within our faculty. Miss Doran, our beloved Dean for sixteen years, re- signed due to illness. She was admired by all who ever had the occasion to go to her for assistance. Miss Doran will always be remembered and loved because of her willingness to assist any of us in trouble, and her kind- ness and sincerity to any of us who sought her advise. She had a kind and warm word for anyone who sought her aid and she left you with the feeling that you had found a new and true friend. Another change in the staff of Wilby came with the appointment of Mr. John McKenna as guidance coun- selor. Mr. McKenna was the former athletic coach of Wilby. He has made many new friends in the freshman class because of his warm and friendly personality. New clubs were also formed in our freshman year. These included the Future Teachers’ Club advised by Miss Rosaleen Price, the Chemistry Club under the supervision of Mr. Frank Hansen, and the Chess Club under the direction of Mr. Nicholas Porcaro. Needless to say, we all recognized and appreciated that these clubs would not only affect our years at Wilby, but would be felt in our future life. During our first year, five new teachers were added to the Wilby faculty. Mr. Donald Menchise joined our English and Italian department, Mr. Robert Bell became a member of our Science department, Mr. Leonard Du- buque was added to our Mathematics department, Mr. Philip I.eonardi, who came to us from Croft High School, became associated with our Language depart- ment, and Mr. George Haddad became a member of our Business department. At the end of the year we all felt that they were long time members of our beloved fac- ulty. Another part of school life is athletics. Wilby High participated in football, basketball, and baseball. In foot- ball, Wilby defeated Sacred Heart, Croft, and West Haven, but bowed to Naugatuck and Gilbert. However, basketball brought to us our well-earned victories against Sacred Heart, Croft, Hamden, and West Haven. With victory comes defeat, and we accepted ours from Crosby, Torrington, Naugatuck, and Ansonia. The close of every year brings examinations. In our innocence we awaited them with but little fear—but once we met them and shook their hands, we learned why upperclassmen dread them. And that is why we say that as the year closed, we looked forward to being sophomores—but wondered and worried—because may- be we would not. SOPHOMORE YEAR As we advanced into our second year of high school, a little older although not much wiser, still wide-eyed and in for more surprises, we discovered that we were no longer classified as Freshmen but possessed a new name—Sophomores. This name had more significance to us as we now felt a little more at home with our upper classmen—for indeed we were upper classmen too. This made our second year a very active one at Wilby, as each of us took our part in the many and varied school activities which were offered to us. In our first few days as Sophomores, as we sauntered around the halls, we encountered a few new faces among our faculty members. Mr. Gaddy, Mr. Rogers, Mr. Far- delli, and Mr. Mikett had joined the staff. We must not forget Miss Chodacz, our nurse, who has the mighty task of keeping Wilby students in the best of health. She also joined the staff that year. It was not long before our various clubs were organ- ized. The Key Club was under the supervision of Mr. Nicholas Porcaro as faculty adviser, the Spanish Club under the direction of Mr. Sileo as faculty adviser, and the Chemistry Club under the supervision of both Mr. Hanson and Mr. Anthony. Mr. John McKenna was ad- visor of our Student Council. The representatives in the newly organized Honors Society were inducted for the first time with all officers being sworn in at a school assembly. Fashions played an important part in our sophomore year, as we all wanted to look our best. Pleated skirts and blouses seemed to be the favorite of the girls, and the boys chose bulky knit sweaters with their suits and white shirts. As the school year came to an end and the finals were over everyone developed the disease known as Spring Fever”. We were all looking forward to a long summer vacation. But we were also looking forward to the fall with anticipation for we knew we would return not as Sophomores, but as upper classmen with the coveted title—Juniors. 91 JUNIOR YEAR Finally, we became upper classmen. We never thought that we would achieve it, but as we looked back upon the past and ahead to the future, we saw a new year that was to be full of excitement for all. Upon our return to school, we found a new face in the principal's office. Mr. Joseph R. Membrino had replaced Mr. James Moran, who had been promoted to Assistant Superintendent of Schools. We knew that Mr. Moran would always be interested in Wilby and that we would miss him very much. But we realized also that Mr. Membrino, a former member of the faculty, would be most interested and willing to help all of us in our many problems. The first important event of our year was the election of the Junior Class Officers. They were as follows: Jo- seph Mollica, president; Betty Dantino, vice-president; Carolyn Albino, secretary; and Janet Civitate, treasurer. We recognized them as hard workers and knew that their aim would be to make ours the best Junior Class. As usual, Wilby was very active in sports, especially basketball. During the season, Wilby romped over An- sonia, Croft, Crosby, and Torrington. However, we met SENIOR Wazoo! The tremendous blast finally happened. Our class became Seniors. Everyone had worked very hard and had awaited that special night—graduation. During the year Wilby was introduced to the inter- com system. We, fearing that we would end up in the company of one of the teachers for punishment, were always on the alert for the squawk box. The punish- ment session was also re-established. One of our first thoughts in the beginning of that hurry-scurry year was the election of our class officers. Our big question was to decide upon candidates who were capable of pulling us through our Senior Year. The results of the elections found Glenn Meier, President, Teresa Mistura, Vice-President, Theresa Iagrossi, Sec- retary, and Mary Marticello, Treasurer. It was not long before sports became a major interest of the student body. Wilby's football squad played many hard games, always striving for a victory, but never losing sight of good sportsmanship. Basketball brought many thrilling and exciting moments to us. Wilby again qualified for the Tournament to be held at the Universi- ty of Connecticut, Storrs, Connecticut. Wilby put up a valiant struggle, but the competition was stiff, and our team bowed out of the competition. We waited with anticipation with the casting of our class play, Ask Any Girl”. Needless to say it was a defeat against Sacred Heart, Hamden, and Kaynor Tech. What we considered most important was the fact that Wilby qualified for the tournament in New Haven. The next important event in our Junior year was the ordering of our class rings. It was such a wonderful feel- ing to place the order and realize that we were really Juniors. We were more exultant when we received the rings and were able to show them to the freshmen. The Class of 1962 chose Mr. Louis Rugiero as its class adviser. We were so happy to have such a capable leader. We appreciated his help in the preparations for the Junior Prom—an event which we awaited with great anxiety. Under the skillful supervision of Mr. Ruggiero and Mr. Egan, the class officers and various committee members made plans for the Blossom Promenade. With everyone’s assistance, this prom was a night to be long remembered. And so, as always with the close of the academic year, the inevitable arrived—examinations. We suffered men- tally for one month. In the end, however, we realized that it was all for nothing. Everyone was sure he would pass with flying colors—we all hoped, but ? ? YEAR hugh success, and the characters fit their parts like gloves: Donna DeCerb, (Meg Wheeler); Joyce Brothers, (Mrs. Wheeler); Tom Ciarlo, (Mr. Wheeler); Marlene Wagner, (Aunt Fern); Theresa Iagrossi, (Aunt Lettie); Jean Cesarello, (Ada); Linda Anderson, (Lisa); Tina George, (Ruby); Teresa Mistura, (Heidi); Cheryl Le- vine, (Terri); Toni Chiero, (Jeannie); Steve Palmer, (Vince); Johnny Mouco, (Alvin); Glenn Meier, (Miles Doughton); Jim Vander Eyk, (Evan Dough- ton); Lynn Southard, (Ellen); Anita Bilanchone, (Jane). And then our thoughts turned to the Senior Prom. The theme was I’ll Be Seeing You”. It was held at Waverly Inn on June 15, and was a night never to be forgotten. The girls attired in their beautiful gowns and the boys so dignified in their tuxedoes combined with the historic atmosphere of the Inn to make this prom an event long to be remembered. And now we had arrived at that wonderful but sad point in our lives—graduation night. We all realized that we would soon leave our Alma Mater. As we walked down the stage on that night we asked ourselves, Is this happening to me?” It was and we knew that we would soon be out in the world, each of us pursuing our own course, but we would never forget our Alma Mater. 92 u N I O R P R O M SENIOR PROM 1962 103 NOTE OF APPRECIATION TO MR.
