The team had great spirit and enthusiasm but lack of experience proved to be its down- fall. The Cats” dropped successive games to Amity, Farmington, Berlin, Gilbert, Crosby and Simsbury. The one bright game of the campaign was played at the stadium when Wilby fought Housa- tonic Valley Tech, to a 20-20 tie. Losses to Croft and then to Sacred Heart on Thanksgiving Day ended a rough year on the gridiron for Wilby. First Row — Dave Rek, Ed Soucy, A1 Fusco, David Kraft (tri-captain), Francis Capristo (tri-captain), Burt Hemingway, Phil Franco, Dave Carroll, Rick St. Hilaire (tri-captain), Frank Bachman, Bill Butler. Second Row — Wayne Laraway, Charles Murphy, Dennis Waterworth, James Gagnon, Bob Turnblom, Charles Chamberlin, Ed. Marinelli, Bob Loeffer, John Laraway, John Post, Bill Cleary. Third Row — Asst. Coach Jim Kelley, Tom Carroll, Fran Ciasullo, Bob Hartnett, Jim VanderEyke, Chris Grudzun, Richard Feliciani, Tom Ciarlo, Phil Brown, John Myers, Tim Sweeney, Head Coach Fred O'Brien. Not shown — John Wakelee, Bernard Beaulieu. First Row — Bob Brown, Sheliie Ferguson, Rodger Crean, Walter Cole, Francis Scully, Larry Sanderson, Phil Franco, Bob Varsallone. Second Row — Alvin Holmes, Jack Cole, Bill Cleary, Jim Johnson, John Laraway, Joe Colaninno, Isaac Coplaend, Bill Douglas, Coach Bill Evans. BASKETBALL Coach Billy Evans took over the reigns of the Wildcats this year. Forced to use sophomores and freshmen in his starting lineup he was greatly handi- capped. However, many of these underclassmen de- veloped into top-notch cagers who will make Wilby’s name feared on the court in years to come. Sophomore Bob Brown, chosen all-city center, is one of the finest players in the state and Phil Franco, lone senior, sparked the team on many occasions. The experience gained this year will greatly benefit the squad and Wilby will soon be back in her win- ning ways. 77 iw First Row John Wakeiee, co-captain; Carl Bender, John Laraway, Wayne Laraway, Joe Magna- reHa, Thomas Gilson, co-captain. Second Row — George Walters, Charles Chamberlin, Steve Noble, Richard Moffo, Timothy Sweeny, George Sealy. Not Shown — Bob Turnblom, Ralph Theriault, Frank Clyma. SWIMMING A swimming team was started at Wilby in ’60 under the capable direction of coach Fred O'Brien. The boys got off to a late start having only two weeks training before their first meet. Although the record shows no wins, the splashers worked hard and a good foundation was built for future years. They gave many of the state’s most powerful teams a hard fight including Sacred Heart, the eventual State Champion. John Wakeiee and Tom Gilson, co-captains, were continuous winners. Wakeiee took fourth place in the 100 yard breaststroke at the C.I.A.C. meet, and set a pool record at Crosby in the same event. Gilson won both the 100 and 40 yard free styles in nearly all the duel meets. George Walters also exceeded in the 200 yard freestyle and was a vital member of the relay team. Many of Wilby’s mermen were freshmen and sophomores this year. They gained a great deal of ex- perience which will help them and the team in the future. 79 Watching Capt. BASEBALL Wilby’s baseball team ended a very successful season with an 8-5 record. The Cats started off by whipping Ansonia 13-0 and toward the end of the campaign upended a previously undefeated Crosby team 8-6. The squad was captained by seniors Phil Franco and Tough” Tony Faressa. Faressa was a standout in the pitching department all year. In batting the team was led by John Laraway hitting .320 and Fran Scully with a .309. Coach Bill Evans is looking forward to next year and is hoping for an even better season. FREEDOM The following speech was given by David Kraft to thank the Exchange Club for its presentation of the Freedom Shrine. On behalf of the students of Wilby High School I would like to thank the Exchange Club for their presentation of this Freedom Shrine” to us at our Memorial Day Assembly. We truly are grateful for the concern they have shown in making high school students aware of the challenges which our country has faced and will continue to face. We wish to thank you for the replicas of such important docu- ments as the Declaration of Independence and our Bill of Rights upon which our freedom as Ameri- cans rests. We, as citizens of the United States, thus SHRINE would like to state this freedom pledge with its author: 'I am an American. A free American Free to speak—without fear, Free to worship God in my own way, Free to stand for what I think right, Free to oppose what I believe wrong, Free to choose those who govern my country. This heritage of Freedom I pledge to uphold For myself and all mankind.’ On behalf of the student body, I again say thank you.” BEST LOOKING Anthony Coscia and Linda Walker CUTEST Lynda Jones and Art Santilli MOST SERVICE TO SCHOOL Edward Maglio and Carol Wooding WITTIEST Robert DiPietro and Joan Messer MOST STUDIOUS Georgette Schmitt and David Kraft MOST SOCIABLE Connie DeBarba and Herbert Pike BEST DRESSED Joseph Gallo and Marie Guerrera CHATTERBOXES Joy Caruso and Gus Schoeck MOST ATHLETIC Carol Normand and Wally Cole PLAYBOY AND GLAMOUR GIRL Carmen Civitate and Diane Gudiatis (absent) BEST PHYSIQUE Joanne Morea and Tony Coscia MOST CAREFREE Carmen Civitate and Joan Messer QUIETEST James Archambault and Ellen Stasaitis CLASS DREAMER Frank Lombardo and Judie Gaugler (absent) MOST DEPENDABLE Sandra Lynch and Edward Maglio MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED Carol Wooding and David Kraft MOST POPULAR Edward Maglio and Sandra Lynch MOST INTELLIGENT Georgette Schmitt and Christopher Allen 111 MOST COURTEOUS Arlene DiPietro and Tony Coscia CLASS PROPHECY Scene: Small, dark room. Do you think he will be able to tell us about the people who graduated with us ten years ago? A. He should. He charges enough for it. Prince Ali Bendo, we came— Y. Come in. Sit down. (Looks in crystal). You are two graduates of Wilby High School of the Class of I960. You want to know what has become of your classmates. (A. and G. look at each other in surprise). I will tell you what you want to know. My price is $5.00. A. That’s an awful price! (Gives him the money). Y. I will now look into my crystal. G. What do you see? Y. I see — I see a banquet — a large banquet. Now the speaker stands up. It is Jimmy Archam- bault; he is presenting to Pat Sullivan a glitter- ing trophy for her distinguished service in science. After many years of research and study, she has discovered how many times a minute a frog blinks his eyes! Aiding her in her years of work, were Cindy Camerota, Sheila McHale, and Lynda Jones, her able assistants. In the back- ground, I hear very beautiful music. It is none other than Ethen Reeves and his martini-music- makers. On the piano, I see Barry Byrolly; and behind him are Johanne Tauber on the drums; Arlene DiPietro on the cymbals; and Susanne LeClerc and Joy Caruso on the bass fiddles. In the horn section are Carol Ricard, Josephine Montgano, and Mariann Sauvageau playing the clarinets; Dorothy Grumauskas, Natalie Burn- ham, and Gloria Gentile on the trumpets; and Marguerite Stack, Frances Corbett, and Margaret Stafford on the saxophones. Dreamily playing violins are Marlene Lenda, Barbara Lerz, and Judy Guerrera. There are millions of bubbles floating around through the air. Looking more closely, I see Lenore Moritis vigorously pump- ing the bubble machine. I am now at an experi- mental farm in the country, where Marcia Dal- ton and her assistants Arline Gransky, Ruth Juraska, Dorothy Bradshaw, and Jennie Capo- lupo are trying to cross pigs with hens so they can have ham and eggs ready to serve. Billie LaDue and Gloriann Gaudiosi appear to be the lab experts. They stand spellbound, gazing into a test tube bubbling over with huge billows of smoke. I see a salesman approaching the labo- ratory door. It is none other than Francis Ippo- lito, who is selling glue remover to flies who get stuck on fly paper. His devoted assistants are Hope Atwood, Leona Frappier, Mary Muc- ciacciara, Karen Kenny, and Genevieve Marto- relli. A. He’s pretty good. Tell us more! Y. Silence! I hear music (sways as if to music). I am at Radio City. Wow! In the front row of the chorus I see the blonde and beautiful Diane Gudaitis, and the dark, dynamic Mary Lou Pugli- ese. There is that dangerous redhead, Barbara Turonis, and petite Beth Macintosh. Some of the other members are Chuch Martin, Mary Ellen Doyle, Charlie Lasher, and Claire Stephens. Now the singer comes forward—it is Joan Messer, singing I Am A Shy Little Violet.” Dancing gracefully in the background I see Herb Pike, Marian Palladino, Art Santilli, and Barbara Farley. G. Go on! Y. Hold thy peace! A. Can you tell me where Faith Stalowicz is now? Y. I see a school — a very modern school. It is one in which pupils learn all the answers from Faith, who knows them all. Walter Yannielli, Rick St. Hilaire, and Mike Tagney, who also know quite a few of them, are Faith's assistants. A few of their favorite pupils are Kathy Ingala, Margaret Johnson, Barbara Harrison, and Chris- tine Selee. Look, there’s John Wakelee. He teaches the boys how to take it,” and they sure learn well. The scene is changing. I am in a hospital. I smell ether. Why, there’s Diane Vicenzi! Doesn’t she look ravishing in that starched, white nurse’s uniform. There are just dozens of decrepit old souls (men, of course) waiting to receive her scientific treatment. A few of her favorite patients are Bill Ofsiany, Anthony Longhi, Joe Gallo, and Tony Faressa. I hear the name of Dr. Phil Franco, the head of the hospital, being called over the P. A. sys- tem. His assistants, Nancy Romaniello, Sandy Lynch, and Joan Fiske, are anxiously searching the halls for him. It seems that some of the leading surgeons, Connie DeBarba, Carmela Amato, Marian Murtiza, and Eleanor Unikas, are in the midst of a very important conference, and they are in dire need of Dr. Franco’s expert advice. It must be mealtime, for I see the nurses’ aides Lois Cocchiola, Marie D’Aneelio, Marie DeSanto, and Karen Kane, carrying trays of food prepared by the well known dieticians, Arlene Doyon, Suzanne Shell, Polly Ruegg, and Margaret Miller. A. What else can you tell us about the members of our class? Y. Here comes Carol Wooding with a dozen chil- dren hanging on her. Isn’t that Ed Nelson I see in the background? The picture in the crys- tal changes — I am in Greenwich Village. I see a studio with paintings, some of them fin- ished, others just a few strokes on the canvas. The artist, Tony Coscia, clad in a blue smock, is standing before an unfinished painting. On 112 a dias not far away is the model, Helena Platt. I am now in a coffee-house owned by Carol Normand and Lucille Cocca. A few of their faithful employees are the waitresses Giorgiann Caggiano, Cynthia Stockno, Barbara Whitt, and Carol Seeley. Gathered around a table I see their steady customers, Stella Davis, Doris Johnson, Gay Ulrich, Shelia Ryan, and Pat Kolenda. There seems to be an attraction in the adjoining room. Looking more closely, I see Pat Lanzara and Beverly Thompson reading poetry, sur- rounded by Carol Mastracchio, Joyce Nearing, Rita Parenteau, Beverly Gilbert, and Catherine Brown. Another major attraction is Margaret DeBonis, singing and playing the bongos. G. Hey! This is pretty good. A. Sh—! (Pokes G. and points to Y.) Y. I see a red building over there and a sign — F. W. Woolworth! In the midst of the hammers and candy, shrubs and jewelry, tea strainers and toys, stands Chuck Bierbaum, the manager. A few of the hard-working salesgirls are Marsha Brillis, Dorothy Hyland, Lorraine Cossette, and Elaine DeCrisanti. I see Elaine Hauser and Ann Tuttle, pushing their way through the thronging crowd. Now soft music reaches my ears. I am in a green meadow — three young maidens are swaying to the graceful rhythm of Elvis Pres- ley’s latest hit. The girls are Karen Johnson, Lucille Faltorusso, and Sheila Pickett. A. Imagine! Y. I am now in a stratosplane, the latest brainstorm of those distinguished inventors Jackie Hartnett and A1 Fusco. The pilots are Fran Capristo, Roger Crean, and Tony Riberio. Don’t they look handsome in their flying goggles! Flying with them are those popular hostesses, Phyllis and Elaine Sowa and Aura Yelicka. Some of their contented passengers are John Hamel, Ann Wilke, George Kotsaftis, Theresa Buonocone, Jeanne Jerkiewicz, Mary Ann DelGobbo, and Pat Byrnes. G. This is all very interesting, but let’s come down to earth again! Y. We’re now at a tearoom at the end of a country lane. There are Lorraine Thifault, Patti Basta, Barbara Synott, and Elizabeth Mitchell serving tea to the tired traveling salesmen, Dick Brown, Timmy Wright, Dave Rek, and Larry Feest. I hear music — snappy rhythm — this time sup- plied by Helen DelGobbo’s orchestra, with such famous members as Ed Teller, Burgess Speed, Bob Stuhlman, Ronny Bruce, Rich Bartkus, Teddy Angelone, Dorothy McGrath, Brenda Henderson, Marilyn Paternoster, Lois Ricciardi, Diane Cookson, and Joan Kelley. We are now in Mary Valletta’s dancing school. Ellen Stasai- tis is dancing with Ben Finnemore, Judy Sasso with Steve Harbanuk. Now Louie Fainelli and Elaine Bobinski are showing them a new step — what clever pupils! In the adjoining room, we are privileged to be able to watch a rehears- al of those famous ballet dancers, Barbara Mar- telli, Annette Guertin, Judy Daversa, and Carole McCasland. I am now in Salvatore’s Salon, an ex- clusive charm school run by Joanie Salvatore. Her assistant teachers are Dorothy Drainville, Tyna Stokes, Veronica Brown, and Linda Berardi. A few of their attentive pupils are Pat Walsh, Mary Ann Akumbak, Laurine Catalina, Lucille Devino, and Sandy Sparano. A. Are there any graduates who remained in Wa- terbury? Y. Yes. Alan Foster is now one of the most popu- lar taxi drivers. Offering well-meaning sugges- tions from the back seat are Sandy Coulter and Judy Van Wagner. Dave Welsh is still using his car as a bus for the use of all the seniors. Among his steady passengers are Noella Doyon, Judy Barnett, Judy Poirier, and Judy Turmel. Lynda Adamek is still taking charge of reserved seats at cafe. Gus Schoeck has built a Spaghetti Palace in Waterbury; Gerri Salerno is his assist- ant, but she devotes a large part of her time to fan-dancing. Is that place crowded! In the booths 1 see Ed Kaiser and Joan Schultz, Jerry Wright and Linda Walker, Chris Allen and Noreen DeBarba, and Herm Schaper and Gloria Andreano. G. (Coughs a little. Smiles.) A. Is that what you’re doing? G. What’s wrong with it? What do you— Y. Silence! Your noise prevents concentration. I see someone going from house to house, weighted down with baskets. Looking closer, I recognize Nicki Velezis. She is selling chicken feed to hen-pecked husbands. Bill Bercier, Fred Plant, and Bob DiPietro are among her best customers. She stops at the comer drug store, and is waited on by the owner, Joan Ippolito. Also slaving behind the counter are Regina Boisvert, Carolyn Diogostine, and Margaret Griggs. A. Tell us about some of the boys. Y. I am at a Big League baseball game. The pitcher is winding up — a-a-n-n-d the pitch. One strike! (as though lost in watching) G. (Coughs) Y. (Recalls what he is supposed to be doing). The pitcher is Frank Bachman. Other stars of the team are Ed Soucy, Bob Albert, Tony Barbieri, Ronny Weaver, Joe Shanahan, Herman Saunders, Dick Fonti, and Rich Grandpre. Up in the bleachers I see Dave Kraft, and he seems to be yelling something. Quiet now! He’s saying: Peanuts, popcorn, hot dogs.” The scene changes. I am in a big tavern run by Beetle” Bailey. In the booths are Ed Flanagan, Carolyn Hill, Dave Carroll, and Donna Schofield. Again I hear music, the soft rhythm of the rhumba. The floor show is on. The dancers, Joan Coppetto and her partner Doug Pelletier, are the fea- tures of the show. Next come the chorus girls —Margaret Culbert, Sophie Szostek, Beverly Amicone, Lorraine Beaudoine, Carole Gudonis; Geraldine Celone, Judy Gaugler, and Elaine Ciarlo. As the number ends, the proprietor, 113 Beetle,” comes forward, takes the big black cigar out of his mouth, makes a bow, and an- nounces that the next number will be by that lovely M. Lois Desjardins! Arlene Moses and Tom Gilson are on the program, singing a duet. Two other popular performers are Rhoda Cod- dington and Frank Lombardo — accomplished sleight-of-hand artists. A. Are there any more graduates employed by Beetle”? Y. Let me see — Lee Chasse gives monologues and recites poetry for the customers. Gail Keyes, Barbara Kearns, and Nancy DelBuono are there too — as tap dancers. Brenda Byrd’s blues” songs are also very popular with the customers. G. Imagine all those people being together after all these years! Y. Unless you keep silent, I cannot go on. I am in the men’s department of a large store. Some of the models displaying the newest clothes are Sal Capobianco, George Cipriano, Timmy Wal- ters, George Lasky, and Mike D'Angelo. Paul Clapps is a big” business man — or at least he shows what the big business man should look like. Upstairs in the store, they feature creations of Lorraine Greco and Ginny Hughes, famous designers from Paris. Carrying out their ideas I see Carol Hamel and Janet Keith. A. Do you mean we pay $150 for dresses by girls from our own class? G. Are there any of our classmates in Washington? Y. Tom Wilsdon is Secretary of the Treasury, and JoAnne Morea and Carmen Civitate are Assist- ant Secretaries. Pat Sweeney and Lynn Warner have charge of their correspondence and are their head secretaries. A. Are there any who have gained recognition in sports? Y. Yes — John Migliorise, Mike Cocchiola, Bob DeBisschop, Judy Feest, and Carol Reamer were in the 1968 Olympics; and Lucille Richard, Jean Messer, Diane Bouffard, Ronny Wislocki, and Andy Asciene were their managers. Judy Ambrose is the star forward of the most success- ful team in the country. Lorraine Pompeii, Barb Columbus, Lucille Reno, and Rose Quici have swum across the English Channel. Gynie Kurtz, Danny Dixon, Ronny Aurio, and Alan Barker are golf pros. G. Are there any more in Waterbury? Y. Edna McFarlin is living outside of Waterbury. She is now Mrs. Tom White. She lives on a farm, and raises children and chickens. Milk- maids Elizabeth Robinson and Barbara Greatorix are preforming their daily tasks. I see Made- line Verbino, Lillie MacEason, and Lynne Feeney pitching hay. Those champion hog-callers, Geor- gette Schmitt and Judy Montambault, are feed- ing their charges. Sitting in the middle of a field, shucking corn, are Jeanne Cambino, De- lores Abbondelo, and Theresa Walsh. Donna Ciarlo, Winifred Blanchard, and Frances Cam- bino are attending to their daily task of clean- ing the chicken coops. Najiua Najauce is hap- pily married to Ed Miller. Sara Walton is teach- ing Chemistry in Wilby High School. A. She used to get perfect marks in it. Y. Tiiu Vahenurn, Mary Caputo, and Linda Kuch are her assistants there. The school is very large now. Mary Vensel and Joe Kumpkis are Gym teachers there. Joan Massetti, Joanne Bosco, Vincent Barquero, and Jim Szustechi teach Eng- lish. In the History department, I see Ruth Kerrek, Danny Lucian, Ricky Jones, and Bobby Martin. Teaching typing are Norma Smith, Dom Valentino, John Caruso, and Ruth Granby. In modern languages, I see Bev Bouffard and Art Petrucci teaching Italian; Danny Picard and Sue Miklinevich teaching French; Diane Cyr and Rita Pezik, Spanish; Joanne Tucillo and Walt Cole, German; and Preston White and Lorraine Lucarelli, Latin. A1 Innocent and Burt Hemming- way own a large dairy farm outside of Water- bury. Donna Dwyer, Tony Gilyard, and Cindy Fiorelli are the local 4-H leaders. Shirley Barto- lucci is a woman doctor practicing in Water- bury. There is large beauty parlor owned by Noella Voghel in which several graduates work. Some of these are Laura Russo, Joan Sparano, and Joe Rossi. A few of their victims I see are Mary Moher, Jeannine Richard, Kathy Quin- lan, and Carol Parker. G. Are there any of our classmates in the service? Y. Yes. I see an Army barracks. Strutting erectly through is Bob Lockhart, who is very strict if anyone is caught napping. A few of his favo- rite victims are Dave Kluge, Jim Sheehan, Tony Rinaldi, and John Hahn. Nearby is the women’s branch of the Army. I see Connie Cimino, a rough, tough sergeant, barking orders to the privates Linda Samela, Marie Solury, Philo- mena Bernardi, Lucille Dantino, and Mary Thomas. Doing K. P. duty are Henrietta Del- Gobbo, Joanne Heilman, Donna Grieshaber, Edna Dufresne, and Cathy Adams. Now I see a girls’ dorm in a small New England college. A. What’s all that noise? Y. Marlene Charette, Judy LaPorta, Pat Culbert, and Rita Johnson are preparing for a pajama party. In the next room, Pat Niedman and Linda Noble are giving Judy Flammia a home perma- nent. Outside the dorm, I see Diane Davino, Lynnetta Carrington, Gerri Dunne, Bea Fisher, and Maureen Quilter on their way to their favo- rite class—Preliminary Elements of Psychology! I also see Kathy Saginario, Janet Carter, Louise Byron, Peggy O’Rourke, and Janice Lamitola carrying books for the upper-classmen. In the library, Betty Lou Hurlburt, Jo Torsiello, Carol Coppola, Valerie Tumulis, and Delores Della- Croce are busy cramming for final exams. Lucky Kitty White and Judy Murno are carrying books for Pat Carozza. G. (Snicker, snicker) I wonder what happened to Ed Maglio. Y. (Stands up, removes turban) Behold! I am he! 114 LIST OF PRIZE WINNERS FOR I960 The Secretarial Prize in memory of Edith A. Mills and Cornelia S. Holcomb awarded for ex- cellence in Advanced Stenography and Typewrit- ing. Judith Bradford '61 CLASS HISTORY FRESHMEN YEAR As Wilby’s doors opened to us for the first time, we, the wide-eyed, eager freshmen, seemed to be left out of all the goings-on. The first thing on the agenda was a welcoming address given by Mr. Moran. He explained how the school was run, etc. There were many more firsts” in our freshman year—the first Red Cross represen- tative, room representative, Student Council member, and who could forget the first rally, or the first time we went to the cafeteria!!! After meeting the teachers and becoming ac- quainted with the school, we fell into the routine of being freshmen. The Welcome, Freshmen” dance in early No- vember was a hit with the freshmen as well as the upper classmen. A prize turkey was given away to one of our notable seniors as the door prize. We be- gan to feel that we were part of Wilby.” Before we knew it exams were here, and everyone was saying, I know I won’t pass.” When they were over, we realized that they weren’t as bad as we had anticipated. We all looked forward to summer and to return- ing to Wilby the following fall as sophomores. SOPHOMORE YEAR Now that we were sophomores, we were in on things.” We laughed at the freshmen wandering around looking for different rooms, as the upper classmen had laughed at us. Our sophomore year was one in which Wilby ex- celled in basketball. We defeated Crosby and Nauga- tuck. This put a feather in our cap. It was also a year for more intense work and study because our subjects were becoming more difficult. Our Junior year started out as another routine year, but the expectation of things to come held our spirits high. Our halls were filled with well-dressed young men and women, because of a Board of Edu- cation ruling which elevated the standards of dress for everyone. The years 1957-1958 was to be an important one for us. The class had to decide whether Wilby would adopt a new class ring or follow tradition with the standard black onyx which had been worn by the seniors for years. The traditional ring was the choice of the class. Once again exams were facing us. This year we knew what to expect because we were sophomores. On the whole, we had a pleasant and enjoyable year. YEAR As the generalization program went into effect, our class was increased by a large number of students from outlying towns who had previously attended other high schools. During this year renovation began at Wilby. Work was started on all the classrooms, the assembly hall, JUNIOR 116 the corridors, and the auditorium, with the expecta- tion that it would be completed before we began our senior year. After a lapse of two years, our football program was reactivated with great vigor and sportsmanship. Even though they did not win every game on the schedule, our team showed that Wilby was still the Fighting Wildcat. Increased manpower brought another sport to Wilby—swimming. Since this was our first team, they did not accomplish as much as the more ex- perienced teams, but everyone felt that another major sport was started for Wilby. As winter approached, the Wildcats scored numerous victories in basketball SENIOR The last year of our high school education arrived and we entered Old Wilby High” for our senior year. The redecorated building filled us with amaze- ment. We slowly marched to our assigned session rooms and filled out the usual information. It took us a few days to get acquainted with our teachers and building. We were kept very busy with homework, foot- ball games, and campaigning for our class officers. Everyone soon became a member of some staff or club. The weeks rolled on all too swiftly. Basketball became a leading sport and Wilby’s swimming team set a few records that were the topic of discussion. Christmas approached, and we were entertained by an outstanding assembly put on by the Inter- High School Dance Band. The Class of ’60 sponsored a Valentine Dance on February 15th in the Wilby gymnasium. It was a great success, and a good time was had by all. As the seasons change, so do the sporting events. Baseball and track soon became the topic of dis- cussion. and proved that Wilby had the spirit to win, and the team with which to do it. Our first venture into the realm of formal dances was initiated with our Junior Prom. The committees worked together to make the affair a great success and the formal affair was an event that will not ever be forgotten by our class. Another memorable event was the receiving of our class rings. We were permitted to receive them at the end of our Junior year which established a prece- dent for Wilby. With the completion of exams, we came to the end of our Junior year—a year of hard work but with many pleasant memories. YEAR In the early spring a dramatics club was formed called The Plegians.” It was limited to seniors only. They selected our senior play entitled Seventeenth Summer” and did an excellent job in producing it. In the closing weeks of the year we attended ban- quets, picnics, parties, and many other activities. We will long remember the Senior Dance and our in- troduction to the Honor Society. Finally, the event that we had all been waiting for —the Senior Prom. The theme of our prom was Dancing in the Deep.” The decorations were beau- tiful, the gowns of our senior girls were glamorous. Everything combined to make this dance the most glorious event of our four years. Finally, the joyous, but sad day arrived. Gradu- ation was here and the realization that we were leaving these familiar walls, and dear friends. Some faces we would never see again. Some would con- tinue their education at various universities and col- leges, others would become successful secretaries and salesmen or would enter his chosen field. The world is there, and it is ours to conquer and hold. 117 ARBOR DAY „ yi ve 'bid' hear bhe JiCiYriG, cf Why We Ul°ll rise and decide, anew “ The eas re of cJl on? kearis devotion To 'ken me TofU sh°d he. brue.
