“
Best known as The Colonel,” Mr. Alexander is popular with and respected by his classes. To them he is not only a teacher, but an understanding friend. He enjoys working with young people, and they enjoy him. College and teaching careers were interrupted by service in both World Wars. In 1946 he was sent to serve in Korea, and returned to Wilby in 1948. He remained active in the service of his country until his retirement from the Army Reserve in 1955. In charge of the Social Studies Department, Mr. Alexander finds himself'a busy man, but has time to serve on the Legislative Commission of the Connecticut Education Asso- ciation and teaches evening extension courses for the Danbury State Teachers College. At Wilby he has taught Commercial Geography and United States History to more than four thousand students. Because of his inspiring teaching, his sympathy, his understanding, and his guidance, the Wilby Class of 1956 gratefully dedicates its classbook to Colonel Newton W. Alexander. Col. Newton W. Moore On yitmoxLam Wilby sustained a great loss in the sudden death, at Thanksgiving time, of Miss Helen E. Moore. A teacher here for many years, and deeply interested in the school, Miss Moore gave unstintingly of her time and effort in its advancement. She enjoyed the respect of facidty and students alike, through her generous spirit, her kindly humor, and her understanding. Her influence upon her students was great; by them she is sincerely missed. In the memory of Wilby will live for long one for whom no sacrifice was too great, whose every thought was selfless in a life of service to others. 5 Principal James E. Moran To the Class of 1956: Heartiest congratulations from myself and the faculty on the successful completion of your high school course! It should give each of you a feeling of satisfaction to know that by so doing, you have fulfilled the hopes and merited the confidence of your parents and your many teachers who have been interested in your progress throughout the years. Ahead of you now lie many challenging opportunities and new responsibilities. We feel sure that you will make good use of the skills and the educational equipment received in Wilby High School to take advantage of these opportunities and to continue your educational develop- ment. Each of you has a part to play in shaping the world of tomorrow, and we hope that you are determined to make the best personal contribution to the times in which you live. The new frontiers that beckon to your generation are frontiers of learning. They can only be reached by young people who have intellectual curiosity, self-discipline, and habits of study. We shall always value the friendships we have formed with the boys and girls in the Class of 1956 and extend to you all best wishes for a productive life, health, and happiness. 6 Strong-hearted and young, with courage and the first stir- rings of ambition, we timidly walked through the doors that opened to us four years ago. Each step brought us closer to success; each stride was progressive toivard our chosen vocations. Many and varied are the fields we have selected for the future. Whatever they may be, may we always remember these four years with their ups and their downs, their study and their fun, their sense and their nonsense, when we strove to attain our places in the world. May we always remember, beyond the text- books and the athletics and the Socials, those qualities for suc- cessful living instilled in us here, so that we,too, in a very real sense may ”honor to Wilby bring.” WILBY HIGH SCHOOL «-;1 . 4 yj' i t i , V M j 'Stj1 CLASS OF 1956 r w 7 t r it i-li ■ N 1[. 1 ¥ Mi f 1 - j h f r $ Ui ethtJ r On r—T i MBb =ft= J Bh. Rah! This time the praise is for the Cheerleaders themselves, and as a recognition of their work. The cheerleading squad stimulates and directs student enthusiasm into proper chan- nels. Their loyalty and vigor, both at games and at pre-game assemblies, have contributed greatly to the morale of the teams and to the success of Wilby’s athletic endeavors. CO-CAPTAINS FOOTBALL The 1955 gridiron season opened with good possibilities, high spirits, and enthusiasm, with a fairly large number of boys turning out for the team. As in the past, however, the question of eligibility and injuries soon dampened hopes for the year. The boys who re- mained in play continued to improve, and topped off the season with a 14-7 victory over the Cheshire Academy B” team. This ability paid off for the Cats, as the C.I.A.C. changed its ruling for tournament eligibility, which permitted Wilby to occupy the Number Thirteen spot in the State Class A Tournament. Although eliminated in the play-off game, the boys made a fine showing against a much taller Norwalk team. Wilby's all-city pair, of Bill Coleman and Dave Thomas, were the standouts, not only during the regular season, but also in the tournament. The class of ’56 may well be proud of the fact that during their four years at Wilby they were able to support two tournament teams. 91 Wilby 66 Alumni 36 Wilby 51 William Hall 47 Wilby 57 Ansonia 45 Wilby 47 Hamden 49 Wilby 63 Crosby 35 Wilby 68 Sacred Heart 60 Wilby 67 Leavenworth 61 Wilby 41 Wilbur Cross 51 Wilby 57 Wilbur Cross 68 Wilby 43 Naugatuck 48 Wilby 72 Ansonia 40 Wilby 58 Hamden 53 Wilby 42 Torrington 38 Wilby 44 William Hall 74 Wilby 52 Leavenworth 50 Wilby 80 Torrington 75 Wilby 51 Naugatuck 71 Wilby 47 Sacred Heart 49 , Wilby 44 Crosby 57 Wilby 66 Norwalk 76 92 First Row, I. to r.: Ned Kurtz, Bill O'Donnell, Dick Gillette, Dave Thomas, Bob Imbimbo, Ken Shel- don. BASEBALL After being near the cellar until late in the season Wilby finished strong by defeating their last three opponents. This splurge enabled them to finish second in the City League and also make the first division in the Valley. The Wildcats were led by the lusty hitting of Ray Archambault, the fine hurling of Dick Gillette, and the great all-around play of Captain Dave Thomas. - 7 , % ----- ‘ e-- 2gr Jd e t Q fu-u .-V° • f -era - - r X rirSS YK? — ’ ' c cs Mfe£ n oiU J a ct-ttv d n P A n- « .
