Text from Pages 1 - 112 of the 1955 volume:

Perhaps the secret of Miss Crary’s popularity lies in her warm and friendly personality. An understanding nature, a pleasing informality which can hold the complete respect of her students, a keen sense of humor—these are the qualities that endear her to Wilby. A graduate of the College of New Rochelle, Miss Crary appreciates semi-classical music and, in the line of reading, prefers biographies. She enjoys gardening, and is espe- cially fond of dogs. But, most of all, Miss Crary enjoys -people. The Class of 1955 dedicates this volume of the Emerald to Miss Crary, as a tribute to her ability as teacher, guide, and friend. 4 James E. Walsh At a time when all the world is thinking in terms of De- mocracy, or anti-Democracy, we have given thought to those many nations that stand as the background of the Class of 195% Twenty-five nationalities are represented among our an- cestors, immediate or remote. Something of their national traits and customs, something of their hopes and ideals, something of their virtues, and perhaps something of their faults have come to- gether here, as elsewhere, to run new threads into the rich tapes- try of American life and thought.” That these threads have been successfully and permanently woven, we believe, is evidenced by the strong friendships, the M unity, the class harmony that has been ours for four years as we I i remained together to work or play or sing.” We present that Harmony as the theme of our 1955 EMERALD, and as a tribute both to Wilby and to the Democra- cy which made it possible. — CLASSBOOK STAFF Editor-inChief............................................... After a promising first game, a scoreless tie, several of the starting eleven were ruled ineligible. In games with Naugatuck, Wilbur Cross, and William Hall, superior teams, Wilby looked impressive in victory. Against some of the weak” teams, the Cats encountered difficulty. Inability to defeat these teams eventually kept Wilby from qualifying for the State Tournament; but in the all-over picture Wilby can be proud of its gallant Cats.” CHEERLEADERS Front Row, Left to Right: Beverly Engala, JoAnn Pctraroia Rita Spierto, Concern Pater_n - Second Row: Marie Iagrossi, Agnes Barkus, Connie Vestro, Virginia Watterworth, Marion Stango, Ronny Battistoni. 80 Considering th small number of boys available, the team made a creditable showing. With little previous experience Conrad Boucher proved the strong boy” of the pitching staff, making good Coach McKenna’s prediction that one win would lead to many. He was unusual, as a pitcher is not supposed to be strong at bat; however, Conrad led his team’s batting average. Victories over Gilbert, Torrington, Ansonia, Crosby, Leavenworth, and Sacred Heart left Wilby one game shy of tying for the city championship. r “V @ £D • Sy H ■' jP tzt - 2zz ■ y o' _£l 's in atm out w in their best perforn campaign in upsettinj oss in the curtain as a game the Wildcats wj figure to win. especially, lf losing Bob Mcllale, their C ri «ring captain and ace re-' f r. midway in the third : on personal fouls.
