Richard Clary, Sally Jones, Catherine Lorraine, Olga DeVito At their bi-monthly meetings, these three seniors, three juniors, two sophmores, and one freshman, all elected by the student body, discuss ways and means of solving many of the problems that inevitably arise during the school year. Recommendations of the Student Council for 1953-1954 included a synchronizing of the Wilby clocks and bells, an improved handling of daily announcements to students, and a lessening of homework preceding the Christmas holidays. They have asked for improvement of the water-fountain system throughout the building, and were instrumental in arranging special assemblies for the support of the basketball team and to appeal for better assembly- hall behavior among the students. At Christmas they supervise the Good Cheer Fund, helping to bring joy to Wilby students and former students who are hospitalized or ill at home. The harmonious atmosphere created by the efforts of this enterprising group benefits everyone. It furnishes a forum for expression of student opinion and illustrates clearly the basic idea of living democracy in school, by a sharing of responsibility for improving our school through cooperation of students and teachers. Every student, whether on the staff or not goes to make up the Balance Sheet; without student support it could not exist. The student supplies the information, which is selected by the editorial staff and then made known to the rest of the student body. It is an experience to be part of the Balance Sheet, on either the editorial or the 65 business staff. It enables one to understand the importance of cooperation and team work, later to accept the responsibilities of the business world of the not-too-distant future. dlizmLitzjj d[u(j President........ Last year over 20,000 envelopes for the Easter Seal Collection were sent out. Those participating in this worthwhile project were entertained for a day at Camp Hemlocks, the camp for crippled children. Further activities include the sending of two delegates to the State Convention of the Junior Red Cross, last year held at Greenwich. Two delegates were also sent to the State Training Center at the University of Connecticut at Storrs, where they were given a special four-day training course to develop their leadership in this field. FOOTBALL Wilby’s football team for the 1953 season was not so successful as the previous one, partly because most of last year's first-string men were graduated in June. The number of boys who appeared as candidates at the beginning of the season was so small that after the first game Wilby was forced temporarily to cancel the remainder of its schedule for lack of players. However, after an all-male rally, the Wilby spirit prevailed, and many boys who had never worn a football uniform volunteeered to play for the Green and White. This resulted in resumption of activities. From that point on, while Wilby did not win any of its games, the team did improve offensively and defensively in spite of the fact that most of the boys were inexperienced. We at Wilby feel that they did a commendable job. We think that with the boys that were on the squad this year and with the coming of promising freshmen, the team for 1954 should show a decided improvement. 79 BASKETBALL Wilby’s basketball team for 1953-1954 started by losing its first game to Ansonia. Optimistic Wilbyites, however, hoped that the pattern, which at first appeared gloomy, would follow last year’s trend when Wilby started with a loss and wound up with a string of victories and The State Championship. In games where traditional rivalry was manifest, Wilby demonstrated that it could win when the pressure was on. In the intra-city contests Wilby defeated Leavenworth twice and shared a three-way tie with Crosby and Sacred Heart for the city championship. Wilby's victory over Torrington was noted as the upset of the year in the eyes of the state and local press. Wilby also played two overtime games and one double overtime game with Crosby, all of which we won. The Class of ’54 is proud of its basketball teams because in the past they participated in two state tournaments, winning both. Also, Wilby has held the title of City Champs for three consecutive years. 81 Mb? Center: Co-Captains Annette Orantas, Jean Petrokaitis.
