CLASS HISTORY FRESHMAN YEAR 1948-1949 The doors of Wilby opened, and the trembling Freshmen clambered up the stairs to the Assembly Hall. Rather nervously, they took their seats. A hush suddenly fell upon the scene as Mr. Moran gave the traditional welcome to the Halls of Learning.” We soon became familiar with our surroundings and we made many new friends, which we kept throughout our four years. With the coming of the football season, our thoughts turned to the 26th annual Thanksgiving Day game between Crosby-Wilby, when our team tied Crosby in a game that will never be forgotten. Now, we felt we were part of Wilby. At Christmas time we were happily surprised to discover the talent the students had in the entertainment field, for that year the Christmas Assembly was one of the best ever put on a Wilby stage. Amid the oos” and ahs of the Wilby students of February 18, Frank Spec” Shea, the Yankee southpaw pitcher, appeared before the eager student body. The following night was a thrilling episode in our Freshman year, for the Wildcats” upset Ivy” 34-33 in the final basketball game of the season. The arrival of June brought to our minds the dread thought of having our first exams; but after they were over, we could truthfully say, They weren't too bod!” SOPHOMORE YEAR 1949-1950 With the arrival of fall, we went into Wilby in the title role of Sophomores, Wise Fools.” We lived up to every mannerism of that adage. We found ourselves in new and intriguing activities, which, when we were Fresh- men,” seemed distant and unattainable. The new subjects made us put our noses to the grindstone. Typing, bookkeeping, and a foreign language were just a few of the subjects which kept us busy during that year. One event which every student in Wilby will remember was the unexpected and 58 thrilling appearance of Miss Jacque Mercer, Miss America of 1949, on our Assembly Program. Wilby did not excell in any one sport that particular year; but we cheered wildly for our team, regardless of the results. Spring was upon us before we realized it. This meant plenty of studying, for soon, examinations would be with us again. We looked forward to September when we would proudly walk into Wilby as Juniors. JUNIOR YEAR 1950-1951 Autumn found us in the role of Jolly Juniors,” accepted by the Seniors and envied by the lower classmen. With the start of school, we found ourselves in the midst of many new and exciting activities. The Key Club, Dance Club, and Swimming Club were organized, and we know they added to the enjoyment of the entire student body. With the coming of the football season, our interests were turned to the sport activities, in which we were either enthusiastic spectators or participants. Mr. McKenna was ap- pointed the new coach. Under his capable management, the Wildcats fared quite well at the beginning of the football season, but slowed down towards the end. The remaining two of Wilby’s major teams, basketball and baseball, had fair seasons. Our Junior Class officers were elected as follows: Marie D'Amico, President; Barbara Crane, Vice-President; Gretchen Korn, Secretary; and Ronald Bergamo, Treasurer. The night of May 11, to the dismay of us Juniors, was dreary and moonless. Despite the inclement weather, the spirit of the Junior class could not be dampened, for this was the night of the annual Blossom Time Prom, which was a record-breaking success. At the end of our year we had many happy memories, and we began to get Senioritis” with the thought of next year when we would enter Wilby as Seniors. SENIOR YEAR 1951-1952 We had reached the goal of every high school student. We were now the famed Seniors, the envy of the Freshmen, Sophomores, and Juniors. 59 As Seniors, we saw Wilby blessed with the finest basketball squad that the city had seen in many years. It was the first time in eleven years that Wilby had qualified for the CIAC State Tournament. The Senior attendance at the games by far out-numbered that of any other class. That year we rejoiced with the team with every victory, and suffrede with them in the only three defeats they had. We left New Haven with our banners waving victoriously, after having defeated Hartford High by a wide margin. The second game, much to the dismay of the Wilby students, marked the end of Wilby’s chances in the tournament for that year—for Hillhouse beat the Wildcats. Election of officers was an exciting day. We waited anxiously for the outcome after the ballots had been cast. Then the day came when the results were nally made public in The Balance Sheet: President, Billy Scanlon; Vice-President, Marie D’Amico; Treasurer, Frances Risucci; and Secretary, Loretta Crocetta. Green was elaborately displayed by bright ribbons, bows, and ties on the long-awaited Color Day. As Seniors, we proudly displayed the school colors. Soon the talking turned to Which pose do you like best?” Proofs were being passed from desk to desk, getting the approval of our classmates; and discussion waxed keen on who would be Class Favorites. The announcement of those much-dreamed of senior activities—banquets, Senior Dress-Up Day, The Senior Prom, Senior Class Play, and finally Graduation made us yearn for the arrival of June. The hot spring sun smiled through the school windows telling us that it would not be long before school would be over and we would be bidding friends adieu. Then came the confusion and excitement of taking club pictures, getting measured for caps and gowns, try-outs for the class play, girls looking frantically for a new gown for the Senior Prom, members of the Class Book Staff working hectically getting the book ready for the printer; and when all this confusion had ended, we found ourselves prac- ticing for graduation and singing the refrains of the Wilby Alma Mater. We looked forward to graduation with anticipation and sorrow, for June 18 would be the turning point in our lives. That night would mark the end of happy and memorable days in school and the beginning of an altogether different life—but a happy one, we hoped. 60 T ACTIVITIES ITALIAfl T 0 5 LAX'n ACCOUNTING CLUB President................................. SEASON SUMMARY Opening its '51 season under the lights at Municipal Stadium, Wilby edged out Sacred Heart 9-6 with a superb third quarter offensive after coming into the second half with the Hearts leading 6-2. A Messina- to-Clary aerial, a Scanlon plunge, and one good field goal—and the Wildcats wrapped it up 9-6. Packing their gear and drifting down the Valley, the gridsters tripped Naugy 13-7. With 4 minutes remaining in the game and behind 7-0, Messina passed 45 yards to Clary, who carried to the end zone to make it 7 all. Then down to 40 seconds, Clary snatched the pigskin from a garnet man Steve Martin, and pushed 50 yards of ground beneath him for the winning T. D. Journeying to New Haven, the Wildcats suffered their first defeat at the hands of Wilbur Cross 33-6. Then, traveling to Darien, the Grove Street Strutters” were downed 33-0 as the Darien Blue and White, powered with a fast and speedy backfield—plus a heavy line, held the Wildcats helpless. Meeting Leavenworth on home ground, the Wilby colors bowed 8-6 as the Tech Mechanics” showed mastery of the wet, muddy field. The deciding factor of the game came in the first period when a wet ball poorly passed from the center got away and was trapped in the end 2one, giving the Techmen” a game-deciding touchback. The Wilby men next met Bristol at Muzzy Field, where they suffered their fourth straight defeat of the season with a 32-0 romping. The boys in Maroon kept the Wildcats at a standstill, with their numerous inter- ceptions depriving us of yardage possibilities. Crosby 7-Wilby 0—Turkey Day! A jam-packed Municipal Stadium, on a chilled and frosty Thanksgiving morning, witnessed a strong but fairly even tussle between the two old-time rivals. Late in the last period, the Ivymen intercepted a pass and advanced into the end zone The extra point was made good, and with the sounding of the final gun, Crosby found a 7-0 victory. The Wildcats played superb ball throughout the game as they jumped a 19-9 quarter and a decisive 28-12 halftime lead. Into the third period, the point racking surge continued and at the three-quarter point, the Wilbyites showed a 42-26 lead. Dick Clary and Carl Niesobecki sparked the club with 20 and 17 points, respectively. Quarter Finals State title holders, Hillhouse High of New Haven, with superior rebounding and a tight defense downed Wilby 46-33 in the tourney's Quarter Finals. The Wilbymen gave Hillhouse a tough first half, as they trailed 17-14 at the period and 23-21 at halftime. In the third period, however, the Wildcats folded up as Carl Niesobecki made Wilby’s only 2 points; while Hillhouse tallied 13. The last period found the Wildcats facing all the rough breaks, as the sharp- shooting of Jim Gaetano—who scored a total of 25 points—sparked the Hillhouse squad for the 46-33 victory. Throughout the night the Wildcats were suppressed by the extremely tight defense and rebounding strength of the Ac’s as Wilby was forced to shoot from the out- side. The rangy New Haven squad found no trouble in controlling the ball. WILDCATS QUALIFY FOR STATE TOURNAMENT For the first time in eleven years, Wilby’s basketball team gained an entry spot in the New Haven C.I.A.C. tournaments. Coach John McKenna’s Wildcats” made quick work of qualifying, as they downed their first 8 oppo- nents in straight wins, all of which occurred on our home court. Taking to the road, the Wilbymen, confronted with injuries and facing greatly developed opposition ran into a wall of so-called Road Jinx.” Traveling to New Haven, they suffered their first defeat of the season (38-36) in a heart-breaking overtime with Wilbur Cross. Barely taking time out for breath, they moved down the valley, where they faced Ansonia High, and again bowed (56-55) in their second straight overtime. With Dick Clary, Dick Aczas, and Joe Silva on the injured list, Wilby then journeyed to Torrington, where the Red Raiders,” showing fine form, tripped the Wilbyites (54-51) for their third straight loss on the road. Leavenworth High, displaying their best brand of ball all season, gave the Wildcats” quite a workout, as they tried for a possible upset. They finally fell under in a last period rally 63-48, giving the Wildcats” their tenth win. Then traveling to West Haven, the Wilby- men” found themselves successful in breaking their Road Jinx” with a 52-46 win over the Blue Devils.” A 57-49 victory over Naugy High gave the Wildcats” their eleventh win, 14 starts. The Wildcats” captured the city title and tied for the Valley League with a 58-37 win over Sacred Heart, and a 60-40 victory over Crosby, ending the season with a 13-3 record.
