Text from Pages 1 - 164 of the 1988 volume:

The Digger ’88 features YOU, the student body, and your treasured memories throughout the year. The theme, “Were you there when ... follows those mo- ments when you made memories. Your smiles, your tears, your excitement, and your love for each other are what made Wilbur- ton School a living, breathing entity. When some of the seniors were asked the ques- tion “What does WHS mean to you?”, here were some of their re- sponses: “It is a special piece in my life that I’m about to lose for- ever.” - Sharilyn Turner “It has been a tradi- tion for all of my family to graduate from Wilburton High.” - Dana Holl- ingback “I’ll miss high school and my friends when I’m gone.” - Richard Robinson “Getting an educa- tion.” - David Turner “WHS has given me many good friends and great memories. It will be hard to leave all of the very special times.” - Lau- ra Holland “Special people and memories.” - Shiela Bell Students come and stu- dents go at Wilburton Schools, but this was YOUR YEAR. “You were here when ...” and it is recorded in the DIGGER ’88! WHS band members Sandra Jones and Stacy Johnson carried the Wilburton Diggers flag in the Homecoming Parade. This was just one of the many ways that students showed their school spirit and pride. Candy Massey, along with the sixth grade class, presented Mr. Glenn with a giant birthday card that read, “We the People of the Wilburton School wish you the blessings of liberty ... and a very happy birthday.” The entire stu- dent body sang “Happy Birth- day.” Highschool students also par- ticipated in the celebration. Mrs. Betty Johnston showed her ver- sion of Martha Washington and Kurtis Lund stood almost patient- ly, waiting to present the flag. WERE YOU WERE WHEN WE PARADE BEGAN? Wilburton Junior High Cheerleaders Stormy Waugh, Angela Buffington, Ellen Askew, and Jana Jordan waved and smiled prettily for the camera during the Homecoming parade. Thanks to the administra- tion, the students had the right teachers to help them learn new things. For some of the teachers it was their first year to teach, but the administra- tion chose the teachers they knew could best ful- fill the job. One of the major deci- sions the administration made was the hiring of a new High School princi- pal. Mr. Jerry D. Bettis was chosen to take the place of retiring principal Mr. Charles E. Adams. Mr. Bettis was principal second semester of the 1987-88 school year. When asked to com- ment on the 1987-88 school year, Mr. Shero said, “It has been an excel- lent year; one of the best out of my fourteen years at Wilburton Schools. I think the biggest improve- ment is the student’s be- havior and attitude- change at school. This is due to the fact that we have a new Junior High and two cafeterias, which makes the school better arranged.” SUPERINTENDENT John G. Shero HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL First Semester Charles E. Adams HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL Second Semester Jerry D. Bettis Mr. Shero and Mr. Adams greeted the new High School Principal, Mr. Jerry Bettis, at an assembly in the High School auditorium. Charles E. Adams and Sam Taylor. Do those names sound familiar to you? They should. These two men spent a combination of thirty-four years at Wilburton Public Schools. Dedication and devotion were two of the many words used to describe the effort they made to help the students, teachers, staff, and administration of the school. Many times you found Mr. Adams and Mr. Taylor counseling with students about class changes or future plans. Of course, they both were always present for the annual ice cream social and all of those football and basketball games. Although Mr. Adams and Mr. Taylor took their work seriously, each man had his own special sense of humor. When Mr. Taylor turned his hat around backwards, you knew he had something funny to say. We remember when Mr. Adams won his car on Bob Barker’s game show “The Price Is Right,” even though we could not find game show instructions in the student handbook. While their time as leaders of the school officially ended, we knew we still had their support. We thanked them for all of the memories they gave us, told them goodbye, and released them with our very best wishes for their future activities. --------WE TAUGHT The faculty at our school made the 1987-88 School year one of the best. They were always there when we needed them. They weren’t only our teachers, They were also our friends. Even though we didn’t always express to them our feelings. Leave it to young Bill Jackson to get himself into a terrible jam. But could you blame him for not correcting a wrong impression when fifty-thousand dollars were at stake? You see Bill was a Doctor of Philosophy and a college professor, which means he really could be called “Doctor. His fiance, Angela, had a wealthy, cranky uncle who liked medical doctors but was strongly prejudiced against professors. When Angela brought Bill to meet Uncle Henry at the hospital and introduced him as Dr. Jackson, Un- cle Henry thought he was a surgeon and no one corrected him because he promised to give Angela and Bill $50,000 for the first life Bill saved. That really started something ... for the regular hospital doctor had to leave town suddenly and Bill was called upon to help in several humorous emergencies. One laughable situation followed another until the worst of all happened — a patient suddenly devel- oped appendicitis! When the patient disappeared, the whole hospital staff rushed around trying to find him. Meanwhile, someone purposely changed Uncle Henry’s temperature on the record book. Although he was never really sick, Uncle Henry managed to think that Bill saved his life and rewarded Bill and Angela with the $50,000 he had promised. . .. One concern of the Digger '88 staff was getting final drafts and finished copy ready. This caused great panic as deadlines ap- proached. Much work was involved in that pictures had to be snapped and placed on lay- outs, layouts had to be drawn, and copy had to be written. This required team- work from the staff. Although at times it seemed questionable that this record of the 1987-88 school year would ever make it to press, every aspect final- ly fell into place and the Dig- ger '88 was completed. The Diggers didn’t have the best of seasons, but they worked extremely hard and gave a terrific effort throughout the year. “Seniors should remember that they gave it their best, worked very hard, and were a well-disciplined team in their attitude,” the coach added. The seventh graders showed excellent potential in posting a 2-2 record. The eighth grade team had an outstanding year with a 5-1-1 record. “They should be favored to win the conference championship honors next year,” said Coach Gary Boyd. The ninth grade posted a 1-7 record, which to most outside observers would be classified as being unsuccessful. However, suc- cess can’t always be measured in victories. The freshmen, though few in number, may have been the most accomplished of all the groups. “As coaches, we look to improvement as a measuring stick. Without the clubs, merchants and indivi- duals who buy ads and the money and supplies given by generous supporters, we would have less resources for school activities. They also share their time. Parents, families, and other local people make up the fan clubs. From Junior and Senior class parents working in the concession stands to parents offering their time to put together and coach the Little Digger football team, they give of themselves. The community’s support helps make the events happen that create our many memories of the year. Students face many challenges as they live in our community. When asked, “What was your most challenging experience?” these were the responses of some: “Having to enroll in school.”- Wayne Brown, Senior “Running track at Eastern in the National Meet.” - Greg Raper, Coach “Every day I’m faced with a different challenge.” - Bryon Rice, Sopho- more “Picking up dog droppings in the back yard.” - Justin Curtis, Sopho- more “Trying to get Todd Abernathy and Nathan Vincent to the hospital after they had been in an accident.” - John Vincent, Junior “Raising two daughters.” - Charlene Corvin, Teacher ns TtlA Ckoito Of A Neu) GcMffidtlm PEPSI-COLA. A NIGHT IN VEGAS” was the theme and glitter was the look at the Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom. The Juniors wanted to give the Seniors a ”going out” that they would never forget. Since they couldn’t afford to fly everyone to Vegas for a night, they did the next best thing — gave them a feast with a wonderful atmosphere, great decorations, and dancing afterwards. This was a night of fun and glamour. The girls each tried to compete for the new role of Vanna, and the guys looked great in their dress clothes. It was all quite a change from the everyday high school look of jeans and sneakers. The Prophecy foretelling the Seniors activities 20 years into the future was read by Theresa Raunikar. John Vincent, and Shelly Johns. In the triumph of having completed twelve years of education, the Seniors willed away their high school achievements and behaviors. The Will was presented by Kellie Price and Janina Collums. Mike Wilks and Lynn Johnson enjoyed popping” their confetti favors. Nathan Cox, Brian Cannon, Chris Rowland, George Monks. Billy Draper, and Scott Moore were ready for food as Gary Guthrie and Billy Houlton tried to appease them. Even the adults enjoyed the entertainment, the food, and all the glitter of the evening. The servers paused momentarily from their slavery to have their picture taken in their dealer’s outfits. We all knew Jerald Hollingback needed someone to take care of him. Jennifer Booth did the honors and fixed his clothing for his official prom picture. Friends gathered together for a group picture they would never forget — nor would Mrs. Taylor or Ken Rager before everyone was satisfied that their order was filled!! ... FFA SHOWED THEIR SPIRIT? The annual FFA banquet was on April 19, 1988. The theme was Agriculture’s New Spirit.” Pictured in front of the banner was Sophomore DeDe Morris, who presented a welcome speech, and Senior Kurtis Lund, who, along with Jerald Hollingback, was selected as a State Farmer.
