r SOMETHING NEW AT WILBURTON Lionel Young and Wanda Caldwell stood in front of the E. A. Red Caldwell Memorial trophy case. The family of the late Mr. Caldwell provided the funds and Mr. Young built the display at the high school auditorium entrance. Going up quickly! That's how it appeared as we watched the new junior high building develop. Trainer Sheri Lee and Casper checked the lockers for drugs. They were a part of the Dogs against Drugs program. 010 SOMEONE AND ms IT EVER YUMMY! And so were all the baked goods, as the community came to kick off the 1986-87 school year. It was a fun gath- ering sponsored by the Wilburton Booster Club. Mrs. Collums hawked the leftover items from cheerleading fundraisers at her own rummage sale table to Billy Houlton, Lee Smith, Dustin Taylor, and Deane Messex. Did anyone see Kurtis Lund!? We heard he had on bright red jams. Flag Corps members Shelly Sherman, Jackie Cook, Kim Fletcher, Tracy Smith, and Robin Conner gave their initial performance of the year. Robbie Overlease, Bryan Adcock, Dino Jones, and Colby Boyd enjoyed the tasty ice cream. CAY CE CREAM?!? Katrina Conner dug into her ice cream and cookies. Tiffany Ryan and Michelle Wilson smiled for the birdie. Rifle Corps members Stephanie Gard- ner, Janet Kendall, Robin Bartunek, jolinda Laird, and Shelly Johns gave their first performance of the school year. If Todd Mariott's ice cream and cook- ies had tasted any better, who knows what might have happened! Fashions and Fads were varied in '86-'87. Some of them appeared to have been put together by a committee ...... possibly over the telephone! Christina Lightfoot and Sherri Glenn showed two completely different fashions, but with smiles like theirs who was worried about fashion! Tana Wilks was right in style with her Levis, Ropers, and big, big short. Theresa Raunikar modeled her latest combination. Carol Carnahan wore eye-catching silver slippers, while How- ard Blankenship was one of the crowd with his loose laces. Tracy Smith wore layered cotton tops, which came in all kinds of colors. COUNTY FAIR A TIME FOR SHOWING LIVESTOCK AND ABILITIES A new entry in the County Fair was the Tractor Driv- ing Contest. Danny Hulsey won first place and received a belt buckle and blue ribbon. Phyllis Price and Matt Glan- ville showed heifers; David McCullough, Bryon Rice, and Robert Sprouse showed their lambs. GREAT CEAIAR'G GtfOGT CAST Penelope Maxwell - Kellie Price Deborah Dee Royster - Peggy Davis Helen Maxwell - Janina Collums Aunt Polly Maxwell -Laura Holland Esther - Jennifer Booth Dick O'Donnell - Sean Calloway Phoebe Dee Royster - Linda Brinlee Phineas Farthingale - Brandon Rowland Tommy Tucker - Philip Hawthorne Johnson - Kevin Hale Mahjah the Mystic - Chris Reinhardt Hattie - Angela Vincent The excitement began when Uncle Phineas returned from an archaelogical expedition with the ghost of an Inca Chief named Great Ceasar. Penelope and Phoebe thought they became invisible, and Aunt Polly helped Deborah and Dick solve their problems. Finally, it was discovered that Mahjah the Mystic was a fake, bring- ing things to an acceptable ending. m 111,1 LOOKING AT A DAY OF FUN AND FXOTFMFNT! Laura Hammond, Brandon Rowland, Sharilyn Turner and Venetia Roper worked on the Science Club Float. Robert Hamm lifted the Bulldog head while preparing the Junior Class float. Melissa Roberts, Latimer County Choctow Princess, wore her traditional attire during the parade. IT DIDN 'T RAIN! For the first time in several years, it didn't rain! The day was sunny, clear, and hot. The Homecoming foe was the Muldrow Bulldogs. Joan Cole, Brenda Cole, and Cathy Hood displayed the Science Club's version of the Bulldog. Business Club members Rita Kirk, Tracy Allen, Tim Christopher, Cheryl Christopher, and Molly Wilson smiled as their float rolled down Main Street. Little Diggers Ross Cullum, Dustin Mathis, Jason Bagwell, and Terry Broyles showed their school spirit. Leading the parade was 'THE PURPLE PRIDE! Bulldog Busters Justin Knight and Jerald Hollingback rode on the JUNIOR CLASS float with the Mul- drow Bulldog (Tana Wilks). LittleDigger Cheerleaders Rachel Cantrell, Emily Adcock, and Taylor Deering added their cheers to the pa- rade. Tim Culberson, Michael Daniel, and Clyde Turner were in the Go Diggers FFA pickup. Vocal Music students John Vin- cent, Melissa Fite, and John Nichols prepared to roast the Bulldogs. KLM TOLLE NAMED FOOTBALL QUEEN OIEPENEE ENPEP AT HALFTIME The announcement that Senior Kim Tolle had been selected to reign as 1986 Football Queen was made at halftime of the Wilbur- ton-Muldrow game on September 26. Kim re- ceived her crown from Jerry Rigsby and her flowers from Kevin Davis. Senior Monica Mathis was escorted by Ken- neth Ezekiel and Troy Bullard. Senior Meleesia Hill's escorts were Brian Crockett and Randy Clark. Junior Stefanie Freeman was escorted by Jimmy Neering. Sophomore Shelley Abernathy was escorted by Jay Warren. Kelsey Reding, daughter of Curt and Toni Reding, carried the Queen's flowers. Steven Skimbo, son of Robert and Susan Skimbo, was the crown bearer. LOOKIN' GOOD . . . The annual Band Carnival was held in the Junior High gym. Students and community members par- ticipated in activities such as the dart throw and the basketball throw. Some found themselves in jail, while others just hung around. Prizes were won and everyone had fun. PtOtWK ptHtmi btArtUjuuj Hr a. cedat gtoup. ShdtttU: plXiotU ullur CM rnrJfrd ft itudy. You have one year to go. Juniors! Although the Junior class was busy, they took time out to respond to a survey taken by the yearbook staff. The results were interesting. The majority of the Junior class didn't think that their classes were any easier than their Sophomore year. Most of the students enjoyed going to school. The Juniors have decided that they aren't looking forward to graduation. The main reason they gave was that they will really miss the teachers!!!! Shelley Abernathy Michael Albright Tracy Allen Pam Austin Wayne Austin Lisa Bagwell Jeannie Barnes Harvey Beach David Brents Jennifer Booth Shawn Callison Lori Cantrell Tim Christopher Rex Chronister Jim Clark Johnny Clark Tisha Clayborn Mark Cook Nathan Cox Michael Daniel Leon Davis Peggy Davis Billy Draper Raymond Duke David Emberty Monica Fazekas Gary Francis Rick Grant Kyle Hale Laura Hammond Stephanie Hickey Jeremy Hill David Holbird Larry Holland Shannon Holland Shelly Johns Stacy Johnson Sandra Jones Rita Kirk Jolinda Laird Brian Louch Cheryl Miller Scott Moore Shayne Morris Gina Murphy Brian NeSmith John Nichols Mike Oliver Eric Parks Thomas O'Hern Troy Pickle Lynnette Porter Theresa Rauniker Venetia Roper Chris Rowland Keri Smallwood Catherine Sonnagera Kenneth Spessard Sabrina Standridge Lance Steele Travis Talbot Kyle McCullar Ryan Van John Vincent Danny Waugh Mike Wilks Molly Wilson Jason Witt Sophomore Response Although some sophomores may have thought high school would be the climax of their life, others might have thought it would bring them just another day closer to graduation. They had looked for- ward to open campus, mixed classes and just high school itself. The yearbook staff took a survey of the sophomores at the begin- ning of the year. The results proved to be interesting! It seemed the favorite thing in all of Wilburton High School was the open campus. Going to town is a relaxing break after class all morning, said one sophomore. Most of them believed that classes were a breeze, but the truth was discovered when nine-week grade cards were distributed! The second favorite thing was the athletic program. The band and vocal music kept some on their toes. The contests and concerts were hectic. The majority of the sophomores had decided that they liked the responsibility that is added with high school. They worked consistently every day to prepare the '87 Digger for all to enjoy. Putting a yearbook together isn't as easy as it looks. It takes a great deal of time and re- search. Pictures have to be taken and placed on layouts; layouts must be drawn, and articles must be written. This all re- quires team work. Working as a team, the tasks were complet- ed, the copy was sub- mitted, and an illustrat- ed record of the 1986-87 school year was pro- vided. Although a sports program is financially expensive, the skills gained by the students are well worth the cost. Sports are sometimes thought of as just re- creation, but there are learning experiences. Among those things learned, teamwork and sportsmanship are the most important. DIGGERS MOVE TO 3A Sophomore QB Kenneth Spessard held the ball closely as he carried it down field. Moving into class 3A was tough for the Diggers. They worked hard and had a good season — a great team overall. Thirteen Sophomores joined the upperclassmen this year and gave fantastic support. The Diggers opened the season with a scrimmage against Atoka, followed by another scrimmage against Westville. For their first game, they traveled to Henryetta. Although they lost, it didn't mean they quit. The players kept in good spirits for the whole season; never giving up, but always trying harder. Although their last game was played on a muddy field, the Diggers put up a good fight. The season ended with a 3-7 record. JUNIOR HARD WORK AND EHTHUEIAEM CARRIED THEM THROUGH THEIR EE AEON The Junior High Diggers didn't have the best of seasons, but they worked hard and improved in every game. Their record was 1-7, but records don't always say what real- ly happened. The teams never gave up. They kept their good spirit and showed fantastic sportman- ship. For the students, memories of the past years have flashed on the screen of their con- sciousness while new memories were being made. The home economic students made pound puppies as a class project. Shelly Cecil and Stephanie Gardner were attacked by a pack of those cuddly animals. Home Ec'ers also made a wedding cake and invited students and faculty members for their mock reception. It sure looked yummy as Pat- sy Ellerbe took a bite. Wayne Brown took his chances by sitting in Mr. Adams' chair and propping his feet up on the desk. In leaving WHS, seniors looked back on the past twelve years and a multitude of emotions flooded over them sadness . . . regret happiness . satisfaction . . . love. These emotions were felt as the year drew to a close. Good luck to all the underclassmen! Cherish your memories! Very soon you will be looking back, too! I feel honored to accept the Eagle Award, Monks said. I will do my best to live up to the standards of honor, integrity and achievement set by all the Eagles who have gone before me. I am proud to be an Eagle Scout. 365 DAYS OF f—:— The Fourth Grade class musical reminded us that we should Mrs. Debbie Brown was an intern teacher in the sixth grade during first semester. Clint Cannon had to do his homework even on ballgame nights. CHRISTMAS be nice 365 days a year - not just at Christmas-time. m YOUR TURN TO MINE! Mike Webster recognized the Little Digger cheerleader sponsors, Reva Tyler and Mitzi Bernardi. Bruce Ott, Little Digger Head Coach summarized the year. The Little Digger Cheerleaders saved the best for last as they performed at the banquet. The seventy-fourth banquet of the WHS Alumni As- sociation was a big success. Not only did they add another class to their number, but they proved how active they still are as the oldest, continual association in America today. 1986 Alumni President Linda Hardcastle presented Norm Clayborn with a plaque of recognition for serv- ing as 1985 president. The Alumni men's basketball teams enjoyed many tiring games of basketball. Wanda Bullard, Barbara Humphries, and Mary Francis Cuzalina collected tickets at the door. Seniors William Vaughn, Gary Lay, Peggy Ward, Pam Roberts, Stephen Barnes and Louisa Duke were guests at the Alumni Banquet. AuUen Clou!
