From football victories and defeats To basketball excitement, Devoted fans filled up the seats And supported us through concession enticements. Now to the classroom our minds do turn. To that seemingly endless quest -— Of studying our English so we may learn And our names keep off the “F” list. With Senior pictures in October, Then getting announcements into the mail; It's gone so fast that it’s hard to remember All the year's events in detail. Toward graduation the clock steadily ticks As we catch a straying tear, We'll be finishing the piece? in '86 Because, friends, it’s our final year. ...... The new football field and track have been completed as of this date, making our athletic complex one of the most modern in the area. Our football team was district champions for the second year in a row and then went on to the quarter-finals before losing a close game to Morris. We are extremely proud of the accomplishments thus far and look forward to many other successses this year. John G. COME ON DOWN Mr. Adams shows the new car that he won last summer on “THE PRICE IS RIGHT.” Little did the Adams family dream when they headed for a California va- cation that Mr. Adams would be one of the nine contestants chosen from a field of 300 hopefuls to be a contes- tant. The closest bid to the actual price of a hall mirror got him on stage. To win the car, he had to take three num- bers and put them in order according to the price of a set of luggage. When he set the dial on 6-2-8, the door opened making him the winner of a blue Ford Escort. When they went to pick up their car in Oklahoma City, they changed to the Red Ford Tempo that you see Mrs. Adams driving around town. She allowed him to bring the car to school long enough for us to get this picture! Those who saw the program on TV reported that Mr. Adams was very composed, but he has admitted to a lot of stomach churning during his tele- vision debut. Mrs. Scharff converses with Mrs. Ells- Coach Butler called this the Tom Selleck look, but we know better. Don’t we? worth on Parent-Teacher Conference Day. READY? OKAY! Hilldale cheerleader Kim Tolle “did her thing at the pep assembly before the Hilldale game. She must have been an inspiration, because the Diggers won the game. YUMMY! Kim Waugh, Kim Thompson, and Stephanie Gardner took care of the ice cream sundaes they made at their FHA meeting. LIKE THAT STYLE? Christi Wright showed her style when members of the Business Club went bowling after a visit to McAlester Regional Health Center business offices. OUR LEADER COMES OF AGE! All ends well, however, ex- cept that the lunatics are stiN on the loose!!!!! PURPLE PRIDE FUNVILLE” It was the place to be on No- vember 2! There was some- thing for everyone — a Haunt- ed House. Goblet Toss. Wet Wicks. Gold Fish. Dart Throw, Dunk Tank, Ladder, Fish Pond. Toy Walk, Novelty Booth, Balloon Stomp, Ping- Pong Toss, Football Toss, Pool Shot, Milk Cans, a Jail, and a Wheel Of Fortune, each with nice prizes. The Bank members also took up donations on a VCR (First Prize) and a purple-and-white afghan (Second Prize). These were won by Bill Neering and Phyllis Adams. V CLASSES GENERAL BUSINESS students found themselves squeezed into the bank vault on a field trip. No. they didn’t get any money in there! Kim Pendergraft concentrated on the lesson in TYPING. DIANNA SORRELL, and JANINA COLLUMS |Oined in Christmas caroling in the hallway. KEVIN HALE made his way down the busy hallway. JUANITA STEWART and ILEAN AARON manned the ballot box as KANDI SAULTER voted for the Yearbook King and Queen. FLAGS FLY AT LEGISLATOR EDUCATOR FRIEND Gathering from across the state, people came to the P. J. Smith Auditorium on September 11, 1985, to pay respect to the memory of Edwin A. “Red Caldwell. Red” was a WHS graduate. He returned to teach in the Wilburton School system from 1961 to 1967 and again from 1970 to 1974. He also served as elementary principal and is credited with starting the football program for the fifth and sixth grades. In 1974, “Red” was elected to the State House of Representatives. During his ten years as the District 17 Representative, he was known to be a friend of education as well as one who worked hard to serve all of his constituency. Always the educator, “Red” was a substitute teacher during the 1985 spring semester. He was our friend and is missed in our community. classes that were offered. Shelli Buckles used the dictaphone in the new Office Procedures class. Other new classes were Psychology Geography, Computer Literacy, and an Honors English class for each grade. The “Purple Pride had a terrific addition ... a trailer to haul equipment when they travel. Drum Major Cindy Hendricks, Flag Captain Kim Fletcher, and Rifle Captain Robin Bartunek showed the trailer with “pride . Brandon Rowland and Robert Sprouse enjoyed working on the Apple ll-E computer that was the latest addition to the Science Department. In the summer of '85, a new building was constructed to house the CVET class. It was extremely useful on our rainy homecoming day when parade participants were allowed to put their vehicles inside for drying and decorating. Chris Morris entered his livestock in the Latimer County Free Fair in September. Several Wilburton students participated in the fair with entries in different categories. Many of them brought home ribbons and trophies for their efforts. FADS ... FUN ... PRACTICE .... PERFORMANCE . . . WORK . . . PLAY ... STUDYING ... LAUGHING ... CRYING ... TALKING ... LISTEN- ING ..... Myriad events and emotions were in- cluded in the finished picture of our school year. Putting together that pic- ture used the talents and energies of many people. Showing some of the Fall ’85 fads were Meleesia Hill with her stirrup pants, oversized sweater, and sash belt, and Vicki Deatherage with a knotted shirt over her tank top. The Speech and Drama classes pre- sented “The Dutch Detective” for our entertainment. Spanish Club’s giant sombrero rolled down the street in the homecoming pa- rade, while the Business Club mem- bers prepared to “Bury the Bearcats. Drum Major Cindy Hendricks led the Purple Pride in another great half- time performance. Vocal music students made their first '85 appearance at the fall concert. Flag and Rifle Corps members watched like anxious mothers as their students performed at the end of a week of training. Shawn Saxon, Peggy Ward. Junior Thornburg Charlie Lawrence. Susan Hall. Kirk Miller Kim Tolle. Brenton Duncan Waylin Ott. Tonya Ezekiel Stephen Barnes. Queen Pam Roberts. Bryan Brinkley For days we wondered who it would be! Then at half-time of the WHS vs. Antlers game the suspense was ended. Miss Pam Roberts was named the 1985 Football Queen. She received her crown from Bryan Brinkley and her flowers from Stephen Barnes. Even though the Diggers played hard, they were unable to obtain a victory from the Bearcats. The coronation ceremony provided an another exciting piece in our picture of '86. Johnny Alexander and Jennifer Lawrence AND SO WE DID! It was the first time in eight years that the Diggers had BURIED THE MINERS . The score was 28 to 13 and the victory was sweet!! Brenton Duncan warmed up before the game by tossing the football on the sidelines. APPROPRIATELY NAMED When the Digger football team met their first 1985 opponent on the newly refurbished football field, it very appropriately bore the name of their trainer and good friend, Seldon D. Taylor. Although he is retired from his 44-year career in education, Mr. Taylor continues to work with the young men of Wilburton School. For each football game, he makes sure that the equipment is ready and helps during the game as the trainer. He is well known for his motivational side-line chatter, encouraging the players as the game progresses. The '85 Diggers unveiled Taylor Field with an 18-0 win over Savanna and had an identical score the next week in the rain at Weleetka. No one will forget the next two wins before stand- ing room only crowds — a 28-12 win over Hartshorne and a 28-13 win over Talihina!! However, with the highs there are also lows! Hilldale brought us down to earth and Antlers rubbed our nose in it. It would not happen again!! Stigler was victim number 5 (21-19). There was domination by the Diggers in the District with 40-12, 33-6, and 29-13, wins over Heavener, Pocola, and Panama. We had made it to the State Playoffs! What a fourth-quarter drive to win over Okemah (6-0). Next a rematch with Hilldale — words cannot express our feelings after a come-from-behind (9-7) Regional win. FUMBLEROOSKI?? Oh, yes!! Now we were at the Quarter finals! — The dream, a State Championship, came to an end. The Morris Eagles, who became 2A State Champions, defeated us. Oh, what might have been!! OKLAHOMA CHALLENGE The project chosen for the 1985- 86 FHA chapter, which consists of 44 members, has been Alco- hol Awareness-Prevention. Their goal has been to alert high school students to the dangers of drinking and driving and to moti- vate them to bring this informa- tion to others. Findings of a national survey have indicated that teenage drinking increases with grade, until 90 percent of twelfth grade boys and girls have had involve- ment with alcoholic beverages. The WHS group has been a part of such programs as the Read- er's Digest Scholarship Chal- lenge, poster contests, speaking at Community Organizations, and they have visited KINB in Po- teau and KNED in McAlester to prepare spots to be used in their continuing program against drunk driving. FHA has presented challenges to other surrounding organizations to help with the program to com- bat drunk driving among Teen- agers. Because of their involve- ment with “OKLAHOMA CHAL- LENGE, many teens at WHS now have a new outlook on Drinking and Driving. FFA jackets are worn proudly by members of the organization. They represent a group of people who care for their animals and show them at fairs and livestock shows. They have also participated in FFA contests. To raise money for ex- penses, they have sold turkeys, ham, and sausage. Ron Aaron, Scott Cox, and Mike Hodge welded a trailer in Ag Class. Learning about finances, Club members listened intently to a report on fund-raising suggestions. They chose candy sales and, appropriately enough, Kandi Saulter won first prize for the highest sales. Ricky Gray really got into the bowling game following a trip to the Business Offices at McAlester Regional Health Cen- ter. To his credit, he saw that it was cleaned up afterwards (under the careful eye of the Business Club sponsor). The Office Procedures class skit was a parody of the perfect secretary. Shelli Buckles was the bewitching Miss M-Perfect, Secretary. FHA’ers Patty Tubbs, Beth Holland, Kim Waugh, and Jana Cook, with outside help from Laura Holland and Duane Scott, presented “The Hypochondriac.” William Vaughn and Gary Lay showed their stuff as they presented “Magic Act. ALL SPORTS BANQUET Ka s 5 AND It was a time of mixed feelings as athletes and fans gathered at the Booster Club’s banquet. For some, it meant being honored for their achievement; for others, it was the experiencing of pride for their friends or family members; for all, it was a time of farewell, because changes continue to occur at WHS. Among those who were presented awards were Paula Morrow and Brenton Duncan, who were chosen to receive the prestigious SPORTSMANSHIP trophies. Coach Butler and Booster Club President Bob Moore were there to offer their congratulations. Seniors Ron Aaron, Scott Cox, David Vasquez, and Danny Jones received an award presented by Coach Butler. It was rumored that Coach Butler refused to remove his dark glasses because of a case of “Farewell-red-eye.” It’s probably just as well that it was not yet known that Coach and Julie Wallis would be moving also, or the place may have washed away with the tears! FFA BANQUET MEMBERS AND GUESTS GATHERED ON APRIL 18 Jeff Fite and his mother paused at the entrance to the appropriately decorated banquet hall. There were even live sheep to enhance the rustic atmosphere. Greenhand awards were presented to Jerry Pace, Johnny Clark, Scott Moore, Harvey Beach, Mike Daniel, Michael Wilks, and Jeremy Hill. Phyllis Price presented Joe'L Edington with an award. Joe'L was also named a Chapter Star Farmer. Mr. Hill recognized the outgoing officers, who were Ben Francis, Bryan Brinkley, Teresa Haynes, Kim Tolle, Larry Fite, and Dwayne Hill, as Mr. and Mrs. Enis and Mr. Shero listened attentively. LOUISA DUKE CROWNED BAND QUEEN Queen Louisa was escorted by Mike Sullivan and Paul Hawthorne at the April 29 coronation ceremony. Caring for the flowers and the crown were Me- gan Gean and Adam Branscum. At- tending the Queen were Cindy Hen- dricks. escorted by George Monks, Robin Bartunek, escorted by Anthony Denton, and Tara Arcaro, escorted by Tim Duncan. RECOGNITIONS STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTS NOTED AT AWARDS ASSEMBLY Even though the assembly gets lengthy sometimes, it is an important piece of the school year's pattern. Stu- dent achievements are rec- ognized from both outside organizations and school clubs and faculty members. This year's gathering turned into a “drippy'' one as Coach Butler's last ‘BE-A- WINNER pep talk to the student body brought tears to many eyes It was a sen- timental fragment, remind- ing us that things continue to change as WHS'ers con- tinue to achieve. Helen Hobson sang “Till There Was You at the Spring Concert, and Kenneth Schiwart presented Against All Odds. Liz Stephens, Jerri Dobson, Heather Garner, John Nichols, Brian Hill, Keith Gryder, and Stephen Webster presented an entertaining rendition of “Summer Nights. Cheryl Christopher was part of an ensemble singing about “Hats. And finally, as the last notes were about to be sung, came the tears as the students presented their expressions of appreciation. Kurt Miller presented flowers to Mrs. Sullivan. Dianna Sorrell, Joe 'L Edington, Angela Vincent, and Ken Schiwart presented a plaque to Mr. Southard. In the final number, Miss Andrea Harris joined Mr. Southard in singing “That’s What Friends Are For.” ©ur (Tountru ’TDs QHDice “Are You For Independence? asked Sam Sut- ton during the choral pageant of “The History of America.” Narrators Tammie Dunham and Kerri Vieux, along with the cast of SIXTH GRADERS, made that history come alive. It was a sad time — a happy time — an exciting time — a final time. The Class of '86 had graduated. With a variety of emo- tions, the 1986 Sen- iors assembled for the last time as a high school group. Some were laugh- ing; some were crying; some just felt numb. To the strains of Pomp and Cir- cumstance, they marched into the auditorium amid the elation of the evening. SCRET OF SUCCESS IS TO EADY WHEN OPPORTUNITY hiMi r i±rP.P A GALA EVENING FRESHMEN GRADUATION AND PROM A YEAR OF WINNING! That's what 1986 was! In football, we made it into the sec- ond round of State playoffs. In basketball, our boys went to the first game of the State tournament. In track, Meleesia Hill, Alicia Bailey, Cindy Hendricks, Kim Thompson, and Brenton Duncan entered the State meet. On the local level, Brenton Duncan made the Speech honor roll for the fourth time. He is the third person to have done that at WHS. He also placed third in Prose- Poetry at the State Speech Contest. The Science Club made a strong come- back. Ray Newberry, Robert Sprouse, Joan Cole, Brenda Cole, Laura Holland, George Monks, and several from junior high entered projects in the EOSC Sci- ence and Engineering Fair. Catherine Sonaggera, George Monks, and Robert Sprouse progressed to the State Science Fair. Two student teachers were on the scene at the high school. Mrs. Linda Morgan taught Business Education with Mrs. Allen and Mrs. Crane. Mrs. Mavis Edington taught English with Mrs. Collums and Mrs. Wallis. It was a great year!
