WHS Has State Champion Lance Davis Wins High Jump Keeping a vow made when he placed sixth in the state meet his junior year, Lance returned to win the state cham- pionship in High Jump with a 6-4. Crediting his parents with encourag- ing him to keep pushing, Lance broke four meet records during the 1985 sea- son. He also broke the school record with his personal best of 6-7. Eleven WHS tracksters qualified for the State Meet by placing in the Regional Meet. Winning Regional championships were Wes Morris, Lance Davis, Arthur Go, Brenton Duncan, and Kim Thompson. The team brought home the first place award from the Wilburton Invitational Meet and for the second straight year claimed both the Black Diamond Conference Championship and the 2-A Regional Runnerup Trophy.

All-State Player Wes Morris Signs With Kansas State The first Wilburton All-State football player since 1955, Digger Wes Morris signed to continue his grid efforts at Kansas State as his coaches, team- mates, family, and friends gathered to share in the big moment. Wes had been named as District 2A- 16 Offensive Player of the Year, All- Area Center, All-Conference Center, and was a member of the Region Six All-Star team. Wes credits his Mom and Coach But- ler for encouraging him. If fully used, his scholarship amount will be in ex- cess of $36,000. Basketball Teams Advance To Tourneys The Lady Diggers display the 2A-16 District Trophy they won by defeat- ing Hartshorne 54-38 and Heavener 60-36. In the first game of Regional play the girls lost a squeaker to Poteau. Shoot- ing 57 per cent from the field and 84 per cent from the free-throw line, they eliminated their next opponent, Beggs, only to go down to Roland in their last game of the season. Outstanding Forward Debbie Turner signed to play with EOSC next year. Guard Valerie Collums received the Wilburton State Bank Defensive Player of the Year Award. The Diggers also took the 2A-16 Dis- trict Trophy by drawing a Bye and then defeating Hartshorne 51-42. Their first Regional game was a hard- fought 47-44 win over Spiro. Advanc- ing to Regional finals, they lost a tough one to Checotah and then dropped their final game to Wagoner in Area play. Brenton Duncan received the Wilbur- ton State Bank Defensive Player of the Year Award.

All-Sports Banquet The WHS Booster Club's Annual All- Sports Banquet on May 6 treated ath- letes, members, and guests to a tasty assortment of pot-luck dishes fol- lowing the welcome by President Fred Thornburg and the invocation by Steve Miller. The coaches each gave a lengthy dis- sertation about their particular play- ers and the seniors were presented with plaques listing all their high school athletic achievements. The Pep Club honored their retiring sponsor, Mrs. Quaid, with a gift that was pre- sented by Mrs. Wallis. Guest Speaker Houston Nutt of OSU challenged the athletes to be trustwor- thy and to be brave enough to dream dreams. The Sportsmanship Awards were pre- sented to Vicky Thompson and Ar- thur Go.
