Text from Pages 1 - 152 of the 1985 volume:

Memories .... of days past...like the FFA banquet in the spring of '84 when the FHA girls donned their sailor attire and “sailed right through the serving of a fine meal ........or the '84 Junior-Senior banquet with its festive decorations and lots of balloons ........ or if you really want to think BACK, how about kindergarten graduation for those who would one day be the Class of '85! Row 1: Becky Donoley, Judy Swaffard, Teenie Buccini, Tracy Hollingsworth, Tommy Faulkner, Kevin Gwin, Carmen Gwin, James Gwin, Janet Welch, Cyndi Cantrell, Stephen Battles. Row 2: Audrey Davis, David Autry, Dawn Sauerbry, Estelle Grider, Rick Davis, Tiffany Goldberg, Melissa Bernardi, Stephen Brock, Michael Fite, Charlie Lawrence. Row 3: Ann Oliver, Melissa Palmer, Dale Scott, Donna Harden, Jeff Neering, Melinda Newsom, Jeff Cox, Pam White, Regina Smith. Row 4: Jo Ann Wilson, Charlene Gardner, Tina Slater, Joe Ogle, Cody Crawford, Tommy Kendrick, Greg Wagner, Wes Morris, Troy Pogue, Danny Seeley, Kelly Morris. August 15, 1984 and enrollment is in process. Kris- tina Ross and Kim Thompson wait outside the office of Mr. Taylor, who doesn't even have time to push up his glasses. Kirk Miller is talk- ing to the girls, as usual, while James McEvers waits at the win- dow. Mrs. Taylor helps Brian Fails, Travis Motley, Chris Reinhardt, and Christie Stickler check their schedules. Cindy Hendricks and Kim Waugh are just trying to fi- gure out what’s happening! The Annual Ice Cream Social is a busy time for the servers. note Mrs. Holbird's serious atten- tion to cleaning ice cream from her hands. The line is long, but it gives you time to visit with friends. The reward is finally getting some of that delicious cake and ice cream. After Everyone Has had their fill of cake and ice cream, it's time for some to adjourn to the bleachers and others to head for the performance field. Kim Cecil gets involved in cheerleading as the squad shows what they've been practicing all summer. Dianna Sor- rell and Sandra Wilcox are mem- bers of the Flag Corps and Judy Swaffard, Audrey Davis, and Terri Williams are participating in the Rifle Corps presentation. The Football Guys make their first public appearance of the year as the sophomores are introduced, then the juniors, and, finally, the seniors. There must have been a long-winded speaker as the seniors' picture shows it to be much darker than when the sophomores were on the field. Huh, coach? Rain, Rain, Go Away! That's what we were all saying on Homecoming Parade day. And it did — just at the last minute so that we could have our parade. Since the foe for the evening would be the Hilldale Hornets, parade participants were attempting to wipe out those little pests. Queen Kim Cecil was crowned by Dale Scott and Lance Davis at half- time ceremonies. The light rain that was falling didn't diminish the beauty of the queen and her attendants, but the subsequent downpour sent most people scurrying for cover. All-State Player Wes Morris Signs With Kansas State The first Wilburton All-State football player since 1955, Digger Wes Morris signed to continue his grid efforts at Kansas State as his coaches, team- mates, family, and friends gathered to share in the big moment. Wes had been named as District 2A- 16 Offensive Player of the Year, All- Area Center, All-Conference Center, and was a member of the Region Six All-Star team. Wes credits his Mom and Coach But- ler for encouraging him. If fully used, his scholarship amount will be in ex- cess of $36,000. Basketball Teams Advance To Tourneys The Lady Diggers display the 2A-16 District Trophy they won by defeat- ing Hartshorne 54-38 and Heavener 60-36. In the first game of Regional play the girls lost a squeaker to Poteau. Shoot- ing 57 per cent from the field and 84 per cent from the free-throw line, they eliminated their next opponent, Beggs, only to go down to Roland in their last game of the season. Outstanding Forward Debbie Turner signed to play with EOSC next year. Guard Valerie Collums received the Wilburton State Bank Defensive Player of the Year Award. The Diggers also took the 2A-16 Dis- trict Trophy by drawing a Bye and then defeating Hartshorne 51-42. Their first Regional game was a hard- fought 47-44 win over Spiro. Advanc- ing to Regional finals, they lost a tough one to Checotah and then dropped their final game to Wagoner in Area play. Brenton Duncan received the Wilbur- ton State Bank Defensive Player of the Year Award. WHS Has State Champion Lance Davis Wins High Jump Keeping a vow made when he placed sixth in the state meet his junior year, Lance returned to win the state cham- pionship in High Jump with a 6-4. Crediting his parents with encourag- ing him to keep pushing, Lance broke four meet records during the 1985 sea- son. He also broke the school record with his personal best of 6-7. Eleven WHS tracksters qualified for the State Meet by placing in the Regional Meet. Winning Regional championships were Wes Morris, Lance Davis, Arthur Go, Brenton Duncan, and Kim Thompson. The team brought home the first place award from the Wilburton Invitational Meet and for the second straight year claimed both the Black Diamond Conference Championship and the 2-A Regional Runnerup Trophy. All-Sports Banquet The WHS Booster Club's Annual All- Sports Banquet on May 6 treated ath- letes, members, and guests to a tasty assortment of pot-luck dishes fol- lowing the welcome by President Fred Thornburg and the invocation by Steve Miller. The coaches each gave a lengthy dis- sertation about their particular play- ers and the seniors were presented with plaques listing all their high school athletic achievements. The Pep Club honored their retiring sponsor, Mrs. Quaid, with a gift that was pre- sented by Mrs. Wallis. Guest Speaker Houston Nutt of OSU challenged the athletes to be trustwor- thy and to be brave enough to dream dreams. The Sportsmanship Awards were pre- sented to Vicky Thompson and Ar- thur Go. “Moments And Memories In ’85” Junior Class President Peggy Ward gives the welcome to the Junior-Sen- ior Banquet. The response is given by Senior Class President Valerie Col- lums. Jeff Cox, Jeff Fite, Ben Francis, Ricky Gray, and Shannon Clark seem to be enjoying themselves. Leslie Cecil, Christie Wright, Kelli McCullar, and Dianna Sorrell join in the excitement of the evening. The servers worked for hours and did a tremendously good job of feeding this crowd. They looked very nice, too, in their pink and white dresses and white shirts. FFA Banquet The Future Farmers of America host- ed their parents and guests on April 18 for a banquet. Following the Opening Ceremony by the officers, the FHA girls engi- neered the serving of a delicious meal with efficient precision. Linda Brinlee recited the FFA Creed, which she had presented in competi- tion this year. Greenhand, Chapter Farmer, and Pro- ficiency Awards were presented. Named Star Greenhand for the Year was Jerald Hollingback. The Vo-Ag II Member of the Year was Larry Moore and the Vo-Ag III Member of the Year was Joe'l Edington. Michael Fite was presented the Chapter Star Farmer Award. Recognition was given to Chapter Sweetheart Sherri Glenn and Dean Sprouse and James Hollingback were presented as Honorary Chapter Farm- ers. Mr. Hill made the outgoing officer presentations and President Raymond Rice installed the new officers and made a presentation to Coach Hill. The meeting was adjourned with the Closing Ceremony by the Chapter Of- ficers. I Business Club sponsored its Third Annual Talent Show on February 21. Judy Swaffard emcees the Dating Game. On May 9 the Club had a cookout and played crazy games with eggs before devouring the food prepared by the Home Economics students. May 11 found members at the Tulsa Zoo. Hopefully no one got left in any of the cages! Spanish Students were up to their elbows in newspaper and paste, which they called paper mache, making pinatas. They did eventually turn into pretty, colorful pinatas. Springtime At WHS . . . Mrs. Taylor passed the big 4-0. . . . the frogs finally arrived for the biology classes. . . . the computer students finished their programs in time to graduate. .. . and John Askew continued his hall duty vigil. Awards Assembly Awards Assembly on May 8 gave the opportunity to review many of the achievements of WHS students dur- ing the school year. It also was the time when groups from outside the school presented awards and scholar- ships to some of the students. Presidential Academic Fitness Awards Spring Concert Vocal Music students in assorted mod attire presented a concert on April 30 that included a wide variety of musical expressions. Classes and show choirs from both the Junior High and Senior High par- ticipated. Elaine Barnes accompanied one of the Junior High numbers. For the grand finale, the students all joined together to present We Are The World. Spring Band Concert Features Crowning Of Queen A variety of instrumental music entertained guests at the May 9 Spring Band Concert. It was back to work for Queen Marianne as the concert continued. Pausing for a picture after the Concert were the Queen, her attendants, and their escorts. Sixth Grade Presents Musical The band students began the evening of music with instrumental selections. From the time that Announcer Tiffany Jeffrey introduced the program until the Choir sang Anyone Can Be A Hero for the finale, a parade of sixth graders shared stories of American heroes and some of the tall tales of our heritage. Angie Dunham appeared as Calamity Jane to add her tales to the entertaining musical. Grades 1-3 gave a beautiful and exciting por- trayal of American history for their April 11 program. Depicting outstanding people and events from the time of Christopher Colum- bus to 1985, they delighted the standing- room-only crowd with their costumes and ac- tivities. Tribute was paid to two retiring ele- mentary teachers, Mrs. Russell and Mrs. So- kolosky. | Morning Classes Kindergarten Commencemen t At their May 24 promotion exercises, the combined kindergarten classes de- lighted parents and friends with their program of song and dance. h mniuan uimuuiwu And Prom Taking the giant leap from Junior High to High School follows for the Freshman Class of 1985. With the ending of the school year there comes a flood of memories of the friends, the good times shared, and even the bad times that we have had together. The Seniors have had a good year with all the birthday parties, the ball games, and graduation. Senior Ingrid Raunikar entered a project in the State Science Fair. Tina Slater and Terry Holman received a Superior (I) rating at the State Vocal Music Contest. Marianne Hartigan won the State Speech Championship in Original Oratory and placed in the top 20 of the more than 1300 entries in the Fron- tiers of Science Foundation Essay Contest. This is' a year that we will never forget. Juniors and Sophomores also have their memories of this year for many of the same reasons, but they are still looking forward to more high school years to come. Leaving WHS with this year's Seniors are three retiring teachers - Mrs. Rus- sell from the Third Grade, Mrs. Soko- losky from the First Grade, and Mrs. Quaid from High School English. The 1985 Senior Class made Mrs. Quaid an honorary member, presenting her with a diploma, a graduation cap, and a plaque on which was engraved a line of Robert Frost poetry that she had required us to learn when we were in her class. There are many good people leaving WHS this year, but as we go we know there will be others to fill our places and keep the good traditions going. This statement is mingled with a sense of accomplishment—a certain amount of pride in the successful completion of an important twelve years of our lives. Along with the sense of accomplishment, a hint of melancholy can also be detected. There is a certain sadness for those things like friends, teachers, and that twelve-year-long routine that must be left behind. If this were all to which we could look forward, graduating could be very depressing. But there's more! We have a wonderful collection of memories of the good times as well as the not-so-good times. We also have the knowledge that graduation is not an end, but a beginning — a commencement — we are simply making tracks to bigger and better things! They began the season by defeating Savanna and We- leetka. The next five games were well- played, even though they were lost. The team began District Competi- tion with a desire for the District Championship, which they won. In the first round of State play-offs, the Diggers easily caged the Konowa Tigers by a score of 27-14. The second play-off game was a bitter disappointment to the Dig- ger team and their fans. Playing the defending Class 2A champs, the Morris Eagles, they lost the contest 14-6. This ended the season for the 1984 Digger football team. Here's looking at next year!!! Judy Swaffard and Valer- ie Collums make a last minute inspec- tion of the banquet room as the Soph- omores anxiously await the chance to serve their upperclassmen. Mr. Shero attempts to repair the speaker as Steve Miller prepares to give the invocation. Melinda Newsom and Ann Oliver . . . What can I say? J Pep Rallies were one of the highlights of the foot- ball season. Seniors, Juniors, and Sophomores had a lot of fun yelling for their team, the Diggers . The Great Sull-ack and the Great Dun-ack predict victory for the Dig- gers in Friday night's football game, while the cheerleaders decide which class does the best job of filling the Spirit Bucket. One rally was even in- vaded by a motley-looking group of outlaws. School Is A Gas That's what students were saying dur- ing the last week of August when WHS sprang a gas leak. Students ar- rived at school on August 30 to the pungent odor of gas, which lingered in the rooms and hallways of WHS for about four weeks. Workers from Weston's Plumbing busily labored to find and correct the problem. This was not a pleasant job as Ann Oliver and Judy Swaffard ob- serve by holding their noses. It seems they didn't make it in time! Seniors in Mrs. Collums' English class have lost consciousness. As a result of this chaotic situation, WHS is the proud owner of a 400 foot orange plastic earthworm crawling beneath our school grounds carrying gas. Workers look on as the Earth Machine covers up the earthworm behind the school. , ssp County Fair The County Fair was a great opportu- nity for students to show off their prize-winning animals. Numerous sheep, cattle, and swine were entered. Robert Sprouse and Scott Moore show their sheep. Teresa Haynes shows her heifer while Raymond and Bryon Rice show off their swine. Judge Bill conducts a trial. The accused is found innocent and it is discovered that Mrs. Vandeventer lost her pearls while tak- ing food out of Mrs. Guarineo's bas- ket. “Make It A Memory” That was the WHS Yearbook Staff's theme for the year. Skits depecting A Memorable Day At WHS were used at their assembly to present the theme to the student body. Kim Cecil does a commendable job as Mr. Bockus in Geometry class; but, is anybody listening? Basketball is a lot of fun as Kim Cecil and Jo Ann Wilson dribble the bas- ketball. Beth Holland is the fearsome Coach Wood. Oh, 1 broke a nail, Leslie Cecil seems to be saying as she portrays Mrs. Crane in typing class. Driver's Ed. appears to be very inter- esting as Kim Cecil tries to drive the car and Brenton Duncan (Coach But- ler) grimaces in fear. It was fun, but all good things must come to an end. Tammy Bridges gives notice that the program is over. FHA Costume Dinner Kim Waugh, costumed as a Witch, won the prize for best costume. Farmgirl Kelli McCullar, Fortune Teller Toni Stark, and Clown Christi Wright greeted the guests as they ar- rived. Christina Lightfoot hopped around as a cute little bunny. Mr. Shero, a Scarecrow, and Mrs. Shero, a Raggedy Ann, fit right in with the rest of the goblins. Shelly Cecil was a very striking China Doll. There were many more cute costumes and a kettle of laughs before the strange- looking creatures departed to their habitats to be seen no more. o«Sp fay U A Good Time For All The Halloween Band Carnival offered a variety of fun-time experiences. Dianna Sorrell married quite a few couples that night. I wonder what the parents thought?? Marianne Hartigan got dunked more than she probably liked. Judy Swaffard ran the Basketball Throw. Mrs. Wallis kept everyone looking good? with spray designs. George Monks was a scary-looking goblin. Danielle Poelvoorde looks like she's decided that climbing the crazy ladder isn't what she thought it would be. David Harris was in charge of the Dart Throw.
