High School Days Review We had a very active high school life filled with the neatest in music, movies, television shows, and all the rest of the paraphenalia that teenagers enjoy. A low-down on teenage life in the 70’s: In movies, “A Star is Born” starring Barbara Streisand and Kris Kristopherson took the teenage audience by storm and was listed as Best Movie of the Year” by mariv. Other popular movies were “Carrie,” “Silent Movie,” “Bad News Bears,” The Omen.” “Nickelodeon,” and “Silver Streak.” “Rocky,” “Network,” and “King Kong” received Academy Awards. Old favorites that kept making hits were “Jaws,” “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” “Mahogonv,” and “The Way We Were.” In TV shows, great serials of the season were Alex Haley’s “Roots,” the history of his black family, and “Rich Man, Poor Man,” which portrayed the drama of the break- down of a family. Other shows that had long-running seasons were “Happy Days,” depicting life in the 50’s; “Charlie’s Angels,” starring the latest female idol—Farrah Fawcett- Majors; “Six Million Dollar Man,” “Bionic Woman,” and “Wonder Woman,”—3 super heroes, “Family,” and “Eight is Enough,”—the problems of 2 modern day families; and “Welcome Back, Kotter,” about a group of high school sweathogs in Brooklyn. In music, the theme of most songs was, as usual, being in love, breaking up, and getting back together again. Songs of this type include Elton John and Kiki Dee’s “Don’t Go Breakin’ My Heart”; “Evergreen,” the top song from the movie “A Star is Born”; “When Will I See You Again”; and “Breakin’ I p Is Hard To Do.” The No. 1 song for 1975 was Captain Tenille’s “Love Will Keep Us Together.” In 1976 it was “Silly Love Song” by Paul McCartney Wings. Chicago remained popular along with the Silvers, KC The Sunshine Band, Wild Cherry, and the Jacksons. If you wanted to drive a neat car, you drove a Trans Am, Firebird, Camero, Grand Prix, or Monte Carlo. A painted van would put you in the cool gang, and pickups were more popular than ever. Curtains, window screens, and CB radios added a touch of class to any automobile. Latest Fashion finds included cowl neck sweaters, jumpsuits, scarfs, gouchos, knee boots, socks with toes and rugby shirts. Hair styles got shorter and blow-cuts for guvs and girls became popular. Shoes went from pancake flat to B-inch wedges and everyone wore jap flaps and Adidas tennis-shoes. We realize that all of this will soon pass just as the Jitterbug and gathered skirts have since our parents were young, but we still love it all, because that was “The Way We Were” in the 70’s!
