AT THE CROSSROADS You to the left and I to the riht, For the ways of men must sever - And it well may be for a day and a night, And it well may be forever. But whether we meet or whether we part CFor our ways are past our knowingj , A pledge from the heart to its fellow heart On the ways we all are going! Here's luck! For we know not where we are going. Richard Hovey Thirty years ago, Commercial High School was organized for the purpose of educating boys and girls who wished to take the business and commercial road of life. All students desiring the college preparatory or nursing course attended Commercials neighbor, Hillhouse High School. In 1949 the Board of Education decided to give both schools equal educational opportunities, in other words, the same curriculum. This change necessitated a great alteration of class rooms, schedules, and equipment, and the introduction of work-shop, laboratories, and other specialized rooms. Naturally, under these changed conditions the name, Commercial High, could not be kept. The Board of Education asked the students and public to submit names for the new school. After much consideration, the Board decided upon the name Wilbur L. Cross High School in honor of the great scholar, educator, author, and statesman. Although he came from a family of small means, Mr. Cross became a teacher, a professor of English at the Sheffield Scientific School, Yale University, the dean of the Yale Graduate School, and finally rose to the high ofiice of Governor of Connecticut, which he held for four terms. His greatest aims in life were to giveieveryone the opportunity to have a formal education, and to improve the educational standards, therefore, it is hoped that this year's graduating class and all those of future years will, by fulfilling his aspirations, and high humanistic ideals, be able to pay tribute to this great man, Wilbur Lucius Cross. if l l 4 Al.ii ff' 'f 'l il' ' . 5

McKee FOREWGRD The Editorial, Business, and Art Boards present to you, the class of 1951, the second edition of the Wilbur L. Cross Classbook. This volume is the first to bear the title, Crossroads, This title was chosen to replace Sachem, the name which headed many classbooks of Commercial High School. This title was chosen for two reasons. First, it commemorates the man for whom the school was renamed. Secondly, it reminds us that we have come to a decisive moment in our lives. Literally, we are at the cross- roads of life. We are at the crossroads not only of our own lives but also of the world. Unrest and confusion beset the world of today and important decisions must be made to determine whether tyrants or free men shall rule. We, as citizens of tomorrow, must aid in making that decision. For the first time in the history of the school, students will graduate who have majored in the technical arts, music, nursing, and college preparatory courses. These students must build a reputation for Wilbur Cross not only in the various universities and colleges which some will attend, but also in the many factories, hospitals, and business offices where others will be employed. As a comprehensive high school Wilbur Cross has yet to set its standards and prove itself second to none among the high schools of the country. However, with the caliber of Cross's students being what it is, we should have little trouble establishing a fine record for the school. We have tried to establish this edition of Crossroads as a standard which can be followed by the many editions to follow. We hope in the years to come this book will recall memories not only of the school, but also of the many delightful hours which we enjoyed throughout our high school days. Only you, looking over your book in future years, can tell us if Crossroads is a success.
