nz, ts ,B . W- 7 ' ERNEST LUDWICK, JR., Principal Address to the Seniors Graduates, you are entering the most provocative decade in man's history. You stand on the threshold of tremendous scientific discoveries and political up- heavals. You will observe and take part in science's unrelenting march to conquer the heretofore unknown. Yet the basic threat to your very survival will be the struggle for dominance by two ideologies--one slave, one free. The right ideology is the one support ing freedom and the dignity of the individual. Strive to see all men equal, all men free, all men enjoying the right to the pursuit of happiness. You must pro- tect this free world with all the facilities at your com- mand. We, the faculty and the administration, pray that nothing will deter you from these goals. We commend you for so ably learning the lessons that will make the world better for you having spent your formative years in American schools. We wish you success and happiness in the years to come. fe SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS from left to right: Alfred Bodeau, Paul Martin, Erling Jurgensen, John Wagner, and Howard Shane. f M 1, ss- X -. f f 3 . 23:2 '

THE 1961 HIGH SCHOOL ANNUAL STAFF OF WILBUR, WASHINGTON PROUDLY PRESENTS THE 1961 TOMAHAWK Together, Washington and Oregon make up the greatest lumber-producing area in the United States For this reason and because we are so close to one of these logging areas, we are proud to have Logging as the theme of our 1961 Tomahawk. During the early days of lumbering, only about fifty per cent of the original tree was used. Today, however, through the help of science, many by-products are made from the bark, sawdust, edgings, and so on. Examples of these would be paper, Presto-logs, and pressed lumber. Another resource, Water, has been one of the main means of transportating the cut trees to the sawmills where they are cut into lumber for consumbers' use. In our area the Columbia River is used. Trees are being conserved by what is known as selective cutting. Each tree that is mature enough to be cut is marked. As the foresters go through the timber area, they are permitted to cut only the trees that have these markings on them. Everyone will agree that we couldn't get along without lumber and its products. Through the prac- tice of selective cutting and through each person's care with fire in the forests, We will continue to have our lumber products. Don't you think we are lucky to live in a region with timber and the lumber industry around us ?
