THE 1961 HIGH SCHOOL ANNUAL STAFF OF WILBUR, WASHINGTON PROUDLY PRESENTS THE 1961 TOMAHAWK Together, Washington and Oregon make up the greatest lumber-producing area in the United States For this reason and because we are so close to one of these logging areas, we are proud to have Logging as the theme of our 1961 Tomahawk. During the early days of lumbering, only about fifty per cent of the original tree was used. Today, however, through the help of science, many by-products are made from the bark, sawdust, edgings, and so on. Examples of these would be paper, Presto-logs, and pressed lumber. Another resource, Water, has been one of the main means of transportating the cut trees to the sawmills where they are cut into lumber for consumbers' use. In our area the Columbia River is used. Trees are being conserved by what is known as selective cutting. Each tree that is mature enough to be cut is marked. As the foresters go through the timber area, they are permitted to cut only the trees that have these markings on them. Everyone will agree that we couldn't get along without lumber and its products. Through the prac- tice of selective cutting and through each person's care with fire in the forests, We will continue to have our lumber products. Don't you think we are lucky to live in a region with timber and the lumber industry around us ?
