ia THE ANNUAL STAFF of WILBUR HIGH SCHOOL WILBUR, WASHINGTON presents THE TOMAHAWK of 1958 The Theme Of Our Book is THE COLUMBIA RIVER The Columbia River is the important waterway of the northwestern United States and southwestern Canada. The Columbia is one of the world's greatest salmon streams, and is also famous for the beautiful scenery along its course. The Columbia is about 1,200 miles long and drains an area of 259,000 sq. miles including most of the Pacific Northwest. The river begins in glacier-fed Columbia Lake in southwestern British Columbia and at first flows northward and then turns south to the state of Washington and finally empties into the Pacific Ocean at Astoria Oregon. The Columbia River basin is one of the greatest water-power areas in the United States and in the world. It is estimated to contain more than one third of the potential water power of the United States. The Grand Coulee Dam is the most massive man-made masonary structure in the world. It is number one in electrical output. Grand Coulee is 550 ft. highg 4,300 ft. long, and produces 2, 700,000 horsepower and 1,944,000 kilowatts of electrical power. The storage lake behind Grand Coulee Dam is 151 mi. long- covering 74,100 sq. mi.. The water which is lifted by 12 huge pumps, will irrigate 1,200,000 acres of land.
