A ia THE ANNUAL STAFF of WILBUR HIGH SCHOOL WILBUR, WASHINGTON presents THE TOMAHAWK of 1958 The Theme Of Our Book is THE COLUMBIA RIVER The Columbia River is the important waterway of the northwestern United States and southwestern Canada. The Columbia is one of the world's greatest salmon streams, and is also famous for the beautiful scenery along its course. The Columbia is about 1,200 miles long and drains an area of 259,000 sq. miles including most of the Pacific Northwest. The river begins in glacier-fed Columbia Lake in southwestern British Columbia and at first flows northward and then turns south to the state of Washington and finally empties into the Pacific Ocean at Astoria Oregon. The Columbia River basin is one of the greatest water-power areas in the United States and in the world. It is estimated to contain more than one third of the potential water power of the United States. The Grand Coulee Dam is the most massive man-made masonary structure in the world. It is number one in electrical output. Grand Coulee is 550 ft. highg 4,300 ft. long, and produces 2, 700,000 horsepower and 1,944,000 kilowatts of electrical power. The storage lake behind Grand Coulee Dam is 151 mi. long- covering 74,100 sq. mi.. The water which is lifted by 12 huge pumps, will irrigate 1,200,000 acres of land. x Q . 'first quarter and were never head- ed. Chuck Williamson, sharp shoot- ing Wilbur guard, scored 21 points for the nights honors and in ad- idition played a tremendous de- fensive game. The backboard work of John Axtell and Don Bodeau, was more than Odessa couldi handle. Odessa might not have ibeen as far behind as the final Q14 point margin had they' been able Qfo hit some of their free throws. ,They canned only three of 13, 5 H The win was Wilhimls third in :four games this season from Odessa and the teams ranked one- :two in Bi-County play. Kettle and Wilbur, 1 Winners, Too V CHENIQY, Wash., Feb. 26.-- Odessa and Norfhport camel 'through in thrillers tonight as the Northeast Washington class B bas- 'kctball tournament wound up its ifirsf round. The teams vvou by a point apiecei Odessa stood off' a last-minute late! lone rally to win, 35-34. Larry Sell, isiuik a 15-foot jump shot with 20' ,seconds left to give Norfhport ai 37-:Bti victory over Freeman, Spo-' kane County league champion. Odessa was far behind lone ing the early going but surged back tol move ahead in the fourth period.i But a shot by Spencer Mahoneyi brought lone within a point with 51' seconds left. I Tomorrow afternoons losersQ bracket action sends Reardanf against Spanclc at 2130 and lone: against Freeman at 4. the losersi eliminated. Winners' bracket eve- ning games couple Kettle Falls' against Wilbur at 7:30 and Odessa against Norfhport at Q. ln the afternoon first-rounders, Wilbur downed Spangle, 43-35, and Kettle Falls outscored Rcardan, 53-41. v ' .lohn lixfcll scored 11 points, Chuck Williamson 10, as Wilbur got yan 18-14 half-time lead and kept if fairly comfortable until a late surge at the f-nd doubled the mar- igin. Loren Girsberger paced Span- Qgle with 15 points. 1 g Al rmsrad int is points for Ket-I ,fle Falls, Rollie lledelings 12 and 'Vern Gourlic 10 in the wc1l-bal- anced K-P' attack. I The Redskins were cold the 'first quarter and the Beavers em- assed a 12 to 5 lead. That margin had been cut to 23 to 19 at half- time. Chuck Williamson entered the game for the Redskins at the start of the second quarter and he seemed to be the spark that was needed. Chuck ended up as high man for Wilbur, with 15 points. I Other scorers were Axbell, 75 Petersen, 75 Meams, 13 LaCotu-rse, '25 Bodeau 6g Rolfe, 2, and Fried- hlander, 2. The Beavers had a height advantage and Wilbur was not able, consistently, to work the ball in for close shots. Dunham of the Beavers was high man of the game, with 23 points, 15 of them coming during the first half. He is quite a tall lad-an import from Quincy, Where he played in Class A ball- and he was a difficult man to cover. The Redskins gained a three- point edge at the end of'the third quarter and play-ed a conservative ball-control game the last period in order to hang on. Five points made by Petersen in the closing minutes of the game kept the victory intact. i I i i f 1 Davenport Provides Strong Opposition The Davenport Gorillas, playing their best game of the season, ,gave the Wilbur Redskins abun- dant opposition in the last game of the regular season, Friday night, but the Redskins had a big third quarter to win out, 57-51. Davenport outscored the locals in the second and fourth quarters and had a half-time lead, 26-24. The shooting of Ziemer and7Stan- nard of Davenport and of Will- iamson and Meiarns of Wilbur was sensational. Ziemer had 15 points, fStannard 13 Cincluding an 80-yard ftouchdovvn heave just as the final buzzer soundedl, Williamson 17 'and Mearns 14. Sixteen of Will- iamson's points, all on field goals, came during the last half, and most of them in the third quarter. Wilbur tried a stalling game during th-e last four minutes, to protect a lead of 10 or 12 points, but this strategy backfired when the alert Gorillas stole the ball several times and made good on a few of their desperation shots. Adding to Wilbur's total were 9 points by Axtell. 12 by Petersen, 1 by McConnell, 2 by LaCourse and '2 by Quirk. A sore ankle kept Friedlander out of the game and two or three other Redskins were fighting colds and were not physically able Ito go at their usual pace. , The score by quarters: Wilbur ..,..,.......,........ 16 24 45 57 Davenport ................ 10 26 33 51 1 Wilbur's second team had an ,easier time of it in winning its fgame, 53-35. Q i f Redskins Breeze Post Dovorrgori' The 'Wilbur high school Red- skins, last Friday night, complet- ed the first half of the regular' P131-county league schedule for the year with a 57--10 victory over the Davenport Gorillas, at Davenport. This leaves the Redskins un- beaten in north-half play, v:ith lvictorieg over Almira, Creston, Reardan and Davenport. The sec- ond round of play will start next week. Since Wilbur does not have- a league game this Week, Coach Sutphin gave his boys a three- day rest the first of this week. Saturday night, Soap Ijake will play at Wilbur in a non-league game. The Redskins led all the way in the Davenport game, although the Gorillas ipiut up a good scrap. The half-time score was 26-17. Again, all of the 10 players were used by Coach Sutphin, although the first ,five played a little more than is ,their usual custom. The second lfive was not able to hold Dav- enpore on even terms while they were on the floor. Chuck Williamson was the big gun for Wilbur, accounting for 21 points. Others who scored were: Bodeau, 45 Friedlander, 10g Peter- sen, 7g Axtell, 65 Rolfe, lg Meams, 23 Schoolcraft, 2g and McConnell, 4.
