THE HISTORY OF HIGH SCHOOL FOR TH PHYSICALLY HANDICAPPED By sianey Fink The beginning of public schools in the United States was in the eighteenth century, but the public schools for the handicapped were not started until the late nineteenth and the first part of the twentieth centuries. The first public school classes for the physically handi- capped were actually started in Chicago between 1899 and 1900. The first public school of this type was the Massachusetts Hospital School, founded in l9Ok. The purpose of this school is stated in the following quotation from the Journal for Exceptional Children, May 1952. HThe object of the hospital school is to make every student an independent self-supporting citizen--a taxpayer and not a tax recipientn. Public school classes for the handicapped began in Los Angeles in 1920 at the Orthopaedic Hospital under the supervision of Mrs. Margaret Sullivan Bonadiman. She was the only teacher for five years until 1925, when the Board of Education employed one full-time and two part-time teachers. In 1927, they moved to the house north of the hospital. Four large rooms on the first floor were used for class rooms. The four large rooms got over-crowded in a few years, and then in 1929, they moved to the Academic Building of the Jefferson High School. The demand for a high school for the physically handicapped grew until 1933 when the Dr. Joseph Pomeroy Widney High School was built on South Grand Avenue. Widney offers social and group activities and an academic course for those who expect to go to college, a non-academic course for those who are not interested in college, a non-vocational course, and majors in general commercial subjects or industrial arts. There are six full-time and two part-time teachers, six class rooms, a library which is also used as a class room. The library has a stage and is often used as an auditorium. 9 The enrollment at Widney has increased steadily until it reached ninety-five. By this time the need for another high school began to be felt. Furthermore, many physically handicapped students lived in the San Fernando Valley, and had to travel many hours on busses to and from school. Others were not able to attend at all. ' On November lO, 1952, the Valley Branch of Widney High School was opened on the North Hollywood High School campus. It is located in the home economics practice house which had been leased as a temporary site for the new school. Valley Branch now has two teachers full-time, and one part-time. The enrollment fluctuates between twenty-five and thirty five students. Plans and site for a new and adequate building are now in progress for the school.
