l'l'IN NSY IIVAN IA M I l.l'l'A RY CKJLLICGH 0l l-'ICE OF THE l'Rl'1SIDl'IN'I' C'lIl'1S'l'liR, PICNNSY LVANIA Dear Senior: It is interesting that most of you came to college with rather preconceived ideas and some rather fixed notions in regard to what the world was like. The solutions to its problems seemed clear and you wondered how responsible people could be so oblivious to the obvious. Four years later you see a different world, you know that things are less absolute, that problems are often more complex than they appear on superficial observation. Shades of gray have developed in your approach to personal, spiritual and political thinking. You conclude that perhaps the only constant in life is change, and although you resist it, as all people do, for it is natural to fear the unknown, you begin to recognize that this is a prime ingredient to both learning and living. You came to college with idealistic thoughts, I hope you leave no less idealistic. But you are beginning to learn that some cf your beliefs will be altered by the realities of life. You now challenge the thinking of your teachers, of your parents, of the very society of which you were a part. At the same time you find yourself questioning the ideas you hold on religion, on politics, on economics, on foreign policy in fact on life itself. College has been both a tempering and a stimulating experience. Today you think more intensely, your judgements are based on more and deeper knowledge. You refuse to draw conclusions on skanty information. For some this has been a shocking experience, almost traumatic, for all it has been a maturing process. You leave P.M.C. with a much fuller understanding of life and its meaning. You accept responsibility not only for yourself but for others in an ever-changing world. For me to have had the opportunity to have some part in influencing these experiences is in itself a gratifying and rewarding. . May you continue to have the inquisitiveness, the thirst of knowledge, the sense of responsibility, the search for truth, and the willingness to face the unknown tomorrow as today. For these are the constants in your life. Si ely yo Le. ' Clarence R. Noll 9
