X5 llalwfl' Svvzntnr Gilman tgwtnrg The famous rush thru the gates of Pans to the Marne 1n the July of 1914 was mlld 1n comparxson to the Freshman scramble thru the portals of old lVla1n on a September afternoon just eleven years after Some of us had l1ved w1th1n those staunch old portals before In fact the sp1r1t of 29 was born way back among those youngsters Bower Fmnesey Schaffhauser Fetterly H1lles and the Westerman Boys who were then the Shlnlng hghts of the second Prep On th1s partlcular September afternoon however the b1g tlmbers of the good shlp arrlved 1n the form of one red head of Troy surnamed Wh1te who later became the bow head of our vessel the renown Re1fsnyder of Prtts burgh Boogar of the s1lver VOICE, who took all the g1rls of the town by storm 1n h1s new herrmg stnped spnng su1t the good looks of the class arnved 1n the form of Jack Long who rattled up the dr1ve 1n Henrys first Ford and the other heart breaker Jack Kooken the lounge lxzzard from the w1lds of Carllsle Last but not least came Mr D Mrchael Loprete of South Orange New Jersey fresh from Blalr Prep Though some of us had been at the Inst1tut1on before and thought we knew all the ropes pretty well we soon found thlngs 1n the College were far drfferent from the Prep What terrors that Senlor Short held for us Wlfh wlth thelr new electnc shock machlne Old Greenwood remembers that baby well' The Class was oflic1ally organized on Oct 10th 7 15 P M when the first meetlng was held We elected the followmg officers to start our good shlp on xts course Presmdent A Westerman V1cePres1dent H Schaffhauser Secre tary Allen Rlddle deceased and Treasurer Lmdy H1lles From then on we settled down to the earnest effort of trylng to put away the sheckles for the best Sophomore hop PMC was ever treated to And what a tyrant that man H1lles was especlally when he parked at the candy store wlth the war cry of No dues no eats ' But that was not all we dxd that year for we gave to the football squad valuable mater1a1 1n Kooken Greenwood Relfsnycler Schaffhauser 1VlcAl p1ne H1lles and Long To basketball W1.ll Cralg and Jack Walt To the Rrfle Team Fetterly Wh1te H1lles and Flnnesey To Polo Dan Jones and Ch1ck Bower And to the Gym squad H1lles and the two Westermans Thus passed our first year wh1ch when we look back on It we rate next best to th1s our last year As Sophomores the much heralded Corporals chevrons came mto v1ew upon our noble sleeves and what powers and d1gn1ty desended on us from then on Fetterly was caught w1th four m1rrors one afternoon gettmg hlmself from all angles and Atkmson made many trlps up and dgwn In from of the new men when he found they were salutlng anyone who looked lmportant Then came the much planned for Sophomore hop Wlfh 1ts contmgent of beau tres besleglng the town Westerman establlshed hxs fame st1ll further by agam falllng ln love Another great fearsome evenlng for some of us at .
