“
DESIDERA TA Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender, be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant; they, too, have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons; they are vexations to the spirit. If you com¬ pare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for al¬ ways there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own ca¬ reer, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love: for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment, it is perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully su rrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born offatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace with your soul. With all its sham and drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy. MAX EHRMANN c 1927 by Max Ehrmann All rights reserved. Naturally we had questions and doubts, but soon the halls didn ' t seem quite so long nor the upperclassmen quite so towering. When offered our first chance to be a part of our school, we accepted by joining the various clubs and atheletic activities. In the fall, we suddenly found ourselves working on our first Homecoming Float, and finding out all the pleasures and disappointments in building a float. Returning as Juniors in September, we felt just slightly superior to those a grade behind us. Now we were ready to accept the responsibilities and privileges of the new year. Learning from the mistakes of last year, we put together a float that won. In the spring our speech and drama classes presented two one- plays entitled The Summons of Sariel and The Freak and the Fuzz . We ended the year with our jun- ior-Senior Banquet. We toasted the departing Seniors and secretly dreamed of the year to come. Finally, we were meeting them--all the joys and hopes that only a senior can know. In the months to fol- lowwe were to know what it was to make memories. Leading us were our class officers: Daryl Gersten- maier. President; Larry Watson, Vice-President; Diane Elzey, Secretary; Vickie Squires, Treasurer; Jerry Douglas, Historian. Behind the scenes were our advisors Mrs. Henrietta Carrigan and Mr. Warren Squires. Truly without their help we couldn ' t have accomplished as much as we did. But the credit really goes to you, the Class of ' 75. Without all the support at the bake sales, car washes, float building, and prom decorations, we couldn ' t have been what we were, and that was a unified class. Truly we proved our unity, at our first class meeting when we packed out Mrs. Carrigan ' s room, and by our spirit at our first pep rally. For Homecoming we picked Michelle Hayes as our queen. And for Homecom¬ ing we greased down and rocked around the clock to the music of the fifties. This was the most suc¬ cessful dance in many years at WiHi--from the lessons given by the teachers to the three hundred tickets sold. We then picked our class identities: Prom Theme: You are a child of the Universe; Class Song: Don ' t Let The Sun Go Down On Me ;Class Colors: Burgundy and Pink; Class Flower: White Rose; Class Motto: We Hold The KeyTo The World In Our Hands And The Knowledge To Use It In Our Heads . I believe this was a perfect motto for us, and I would like to quote from Arnold Toynbee on how we can put this know¬ ledge to use. The present student generation has been born to set right a time that is out of joint by car¬ rying through this historic revolution in the constitution of human affairs. Your task is going to be as dif¬ ficult as it is urgent; but do not react as Hamlet did; do not resent your destiny as a ' cursed spirit ' ; please welcome it as a unique opportunity. No previous generation has had this opportunity, and no later genera¬ tion is likely to have it; for, if your generation is successful, the survival of mankind will have been secured, andifyoufail, you may have no successors:. After having said good-bye to Beth Dunn, exchange student to Malaysia, we welcomed Sureyya Erdarcan from Turkey. Sureyya wasted no time in getting in¬ volved in school activities. She was the first exchange student in five years to have had a major role in the senior class play. Our play was entitled F. L. I. P. P. E. D. and the title fit it perfectly, fro m the womens -lib group to the dancing tomcats. After Christmas vacation we said good-bye to Josie Psota, exchange student to South Africa, and began work on the Prom. The year began to race to an end and finally the Prom was held on May 16. As in years before, the Juniors wished us good fortune at the annual banquet. But now is not the end; it is not even the beginning of the end; it is only the end of the beginning because now we have graduated--terminated our studies at Wi Hi. Yet we will never terminate the sense of responsibilities and the memories we have shared here. Although we are now individuals out in the world, in our hearts we will still always be a part of the Class of ' 75. MESSICK We lack the inspiration and leadership that our teacher, colleague, and friend gave us. We miss the cheerfulness, strength, and enthusiasm that she abundantly shared. We will not be persuaded, instructed, or entertained further by her sincerity, dedication, or humor. But this is only half-true-- Her inspiration does continue. Her smile persists in our eye. We beg that her cheerfulness, strength, dedication, and sincerity will have its continuing effect. We have the memory that can smile at the living. If we are saddened, perhaps it is not for what she gave but for what we may never be able to repay.
