Text from Pages 1 - 120 of the 1972 volume:

We Dedicate The 1972 Tom Tom To ... I am honored to be chosen to write the statement dedi¬ cating this yearbook to Mrs. Samuel A. Graham, retiring vice-principal of Wicomico Senior High School. I feel that I am doing this not just for the class of 1972 but for all those thousands of boys and girls and teachers and par¬ ents whose lives she has touched. For Mrs. Graham ' s work in education — all at Wicomico High School (first on Upton Street, then Main Street, and finally on Long Avenue) — spanned forty-two years, a very long time indeed. During this time she helped open two new schools, the present Wicomico Junior High School and the present Wicomico Senior High School. It would be interesting to have a tabulation of all the decisions she has made affecting the lives of students dur ing those many years, first as a teacher then as an administrator. It would be folly to say that the decisions always pleased the individuals affected, or even that they were always correct. But certainly they were always based upon high standards of right and wrong and what she felt was best for the individ¬ ual, whether or not he agreed. My own association with Mrs. Graham covered the last fif¬ teen of those forty-two years. During that time I can testify from personal experience as to her complete k. loyalty, to her unselfish devotion to duty and to her deep involvement with other people - especially with the boys and girls who were her chief concern, day and night. Of her instructional ability I know little directly. But I have heard much about her thoroughness and of her drive for excellence both in her own efforts and those of her pupils. In her teaching of United States history and government, she showed a love of country and an abiding faith in the pro¬ cesses of democratic government. I know I speak for the thousands of people who have been privileged to work with her or under her direction when I say Thanks, Mrs. Graham, for all those years of faithful service. May the years ahead be numerous and happy! George H. Corddry Mrs. Samuel A. Other officers were Darius Deshields, first vice-president; Gene Gordner, second vice-president; Janice Morris, third vice- president; Cherie Purnell, secretary; Bronda Mills, treasurer, and Tad Romine, parliamentarian. The first highlight of the year was the Homecoming activities, followed by the student involvement to raise money to build a student courtyard beside the library. There was only one school dance sponsored by the student government. This was the St. Patrick ' s Day Dance with Cross¬ eyed Jack. The climax of the year was the revision of the constitution. A committee under the chairmanship of Greg Niblett, Tad Romine, and Dean Langrall worked from November to April to revise the constitution and it was accepted and ratified by the student government on May 1. The constitution is much longer and more detailed, and will provide for better organized student governments in the future. 26 Honor Society Teaches To Educate While FT A Is Being Educated To Teach 27 This Yearbook Is Brought To You By ... However great or small, these events constitute a part of our history and must be molded into a fair representation of our class. Names have been mentioned of students receiving special honors and of events having a direct bearing on the attitudes or accomplishments of the class. Wi Hi has one of the most unique classes ever in its history represented by the Class of 72. Part of this uniqueness stems from the ability of the teams of Wi Hi to continue to have winning seasons. Football, a sport that should well be re¬ membered here, never experienced a losing season. Baseball, track, and basketball amassed large numbers of victories and titles. The great success was due partly to the active partici¬ pation in and support of the sports program by the students. Events churned with a rapid and nonceasing pace. As Juniors, we had the distinct pleasure of producing the winning float. This honor was greatly magnified as this victory was repeated in our senior year. As Juniors, we turned out a melodrama in the theatrical arena, The Great Sebastians. The lead actors in this play were Bobby Jones and Janet Schools. Again, as Seniors we dramatized another hit, entitled Never Too Late. The leading roles were shared by Greg Niblett, Tad Romine, Debbie Esham, and Jeanne Myers. Other events that must not be overlooked are Laura Hamil¬ ton ' s visit to Norway as an exchange student, the launching of PROJECT RECYCLE, the formation of the student courtyard, and Mike Marshall ' s and Tad Romine ' s attending the Presi¬ dential Classroom in Washington. One other honor we cannot forget is Laura Oliveira, our exchange student from Brazil, an integral part of our class. However, as all great classes must accept their weaknesses as well as their strengths, so much the Class of 72. One drawback is not new. It is one that has plagued Wi Hi in previous years. That is the problem of getting students to participate in social functions. Because of a lack of interest and possibly a lack of motivation, the Winter Carnival and the St. Patrick ' s Day Dances were considered failures. But even though these dances failed, it was contorting to witness a majority turnout for the climatic social affair, the Senior Prom, better known as Somewhere Over The Rainbow. We have shared much, good and bad, in our yesterdays; we shared the highlight of all occasions this year; what shall we do separately with our tomorrows?
