“
The picture above does indeed show Wicomico Senior High School, but the tree is more apparent. In the same way, the true meaning of school is often hidden behind a hill of activity, and the activity itself all but obscures the true purpose of school. Similarly, the collected photographs in this publication may have immediate surface interest, but their real value goes beyond that. The 1971 TOM TOM tries to divide the activity of the school so that each part can be recalled as it happened. It has found a time for football, a time for seniors, a time for breezeways; and it has given a season to everything. The three main sections are FALL, WINTER, SPRING. You will expect to find football in the fall, and that is where it is, baseball in the spring. Senior activities climax the spring where as fall is the beginning of WI HI for sophomores. Therefore, with this in mind (and with the help of the TABLE OF CONTENTS), you should be able to find your way through 1970-71. And Good Luck to you, now, and forever. In light of this I have endeavored to keep it just that, a CLASS history, a record of the achievements, attitudes, faults, and virtues of the whole class group. Consistent with this purpose, only those events and individuals affecting the majority are included. To say that 71 possessed talent among its ranks is an understatement. A look at the sports record for 1970-71, probably Wi-Hi’s most successful, would present the best example. Not only did the varsity teams amass over a hundred victories, but 2 county and 4 district titles were also clinched. This is not to mention a second place state title in track and an amazing Bennett defeat in football. But this is only part of the story. In the theatrical world 71 produced two successful plays in its junior and senior years, “Send me no Flowers” and “Pillow Talk.” Although these productions were restricting in form, fine acting was characteristic through¬ out. And a sophomore homecoming float victory in 1968 brought us our first recognition, though the feat was sadly never repeated. During our 3 years of Wi-Hi several individuals were sent as representatives for various talents. Among these were Graylon Adkins to the National 4-H Congress, Ben Wood and Ron Landon to the Presidential Classroom, and Steve Bers to South Africa for AFS. And in our Senior year we had the honor of meeting an Australian representative, Bryan Humphrey, who among other things could win a mean 100 yard dash. Then in May of this year the final result of many diverse talents put to good use was staged at the Civic Center in the form of the Senior Class Prom “Arabian Nights.” It will be a long remembered night. But now let us not be too hasty in our enthusiasm. An objective look at Wi-Hi’s class of 71 must be taken if for no other reason than balance. A major topic of 71’s Senior year was a condition termed apathy or lack of school spirit. A condition blamed for the cancellation of several social functions including the Junior-Senior Banquet, Winter Carnival, and Twirp Dance. However, a different view could be taken of the whole situation. Perhaps this condition is a reflection of new attitudes and life styles among young Americans. Perhaps the student is no longer content with blindly supporting school activities and wishes his school to be more relevant. If this be the case then the school must be changed. The baccalaureate service, “A Celebration of Life,” was definetely a step in the right direction. But in a larger sense the class of 71 cannot be called a great class, for greatness comes from unity. More understanding among races would have been the key. Yet is is surprising how difficult this is to attain. Brotherhood remains a question unanswered. Yet whatever the case, the class of 71 has left Wi-Hi with a sense of change ... perhaps for the better. It remains to be seen. Whether you plan to enter college or begin an on-the-job training program now, we trust your ultimate future will be spent on the Eastern Shore. This is truly a land of pleasant living and opportunity, both to work and to play. The world-wide Broiler Industry had its very beginning here, and is still growing. Our own Companies, listed below, were started by a local boy, in his youth. Through the opportunity available on the Eastern Shore, they have grown steadily ever since. Today we produce and market approximately 20 million broilers annually, using the most advanced processing and packaging methods. We will spend 7 million dollars this year for grain and our combined payroll will be approximately 4 l A million dollars. Our expanding companies help the economy to grow and create further opportunity each year. We will be most happy to have you call at any of our companies listed below and discuss the bright future we hope you will have. MARYLAND CHICKEN PROCESSORS, INC. NANTICOKE, MD. 873-2841 198 1 give my thanks to all of the people who made the publishing of this book possible. But more than that is necessary for two particular students of WI HI. Without the work done by Joan Bromhall and Charlotte Hotton who “put the book together” after all of the other seniors had gone their merry way, you would not be reading this note of thanks or enjoying any of your 1971 TOM TOM. Therefore, we all owe them a special thank you. W. A. BLOODSWORTH, adviser.
