Text from Pages 1 - 216 of the 1969 volume:

Dreaming of Alma Mater, Down on the Eastern Shore, Dreaming of pals and friendships. Memories forevermore. Alma Mater, Alma Mater, I love you. Paradise forever lies ’heath skies of blue. Deep in my heart there ' s a longing. Just for the sight of you; I know you ' re always waiting, I know you ' re always true. In the sunshine or in shadow ever new, Alma Mater, Alma Mater, I love you. j 2 Wicomico Senior High School Salisbury , Maryland 3 a FOREWORD from an inexperienced adviser ... CHANGE has reverberated through Wicomico Senior High School this year. Few things have escaped its touch: the sound of class bells has almost ceased entirely and so has the parade of many student voices that wheezed hurried reminders at the 3:40 announcements. Now, teachers - instead of buzzers - dismiss classes; and from the office, one clear voice proclaims all the worthy news unhurriedly at the end of the day. Remember the ear-shattering screams from the box on the wall of the old days that reminded you to attend the class play or recall the vocal chorus that hurrayed you (to the tune of 600 volts) that we were going to beat the stuffings - to say the least - out of a hocker and sockey team from James M. what’s-his-face? ... My, it seems so long ago! Indeed, it is difficult to remember how things used to be. But our many changes have produced many improvements so there need be but little remembrance of things past - a backward glance for old times’ sake will do no harm. But the matter at hand is this publication, THE 1969 TOM TOM, which, I hope, captures some of the spirit of change about which I have just been speaking. If there is no change evident, I am sorry for all the time that has been wasted. The 1969 TOM TOM is an annual that is published BY and FOR Wicomico Senior High School. It belongs to no part, group, class, or individual; but it exists for the complete school. I have zealously tried to exert every influence at all times to bring this about. Your yearbook should not glorify any select few nor should it benefit anybody or anything smaller than WICOMICO SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL itself. The TOM TOM is not merely a memory book or a collection of pages which you will hastily fill with autographs or mustaches. It is a record of the school year 1968-1969. It tries to touch life here at school and register events that occurred. This it does wherever time, energy, photographs, and photog¬ raphers were available. I am sorry that much has been omitted, but I am pleased that it has been possible to include so much. As you see, the TOM TOM has grown this year - and I hope that it will continue to grow. - Juniors, why not push for photographs of yourselves that are larger than a postage stamp? - Sophomores, you are not to be out-done by anyone else around here, are you? Who ever said that a senior picture should be 10 times larger than that of a junior? Do you mean that juniors are only l 10th as good ...? I hope that there are many answers for these questions. I hope that future editions of the TOM TOM will be perfect. Here, in this edition, perfection has not yet come. Just as the many changes have made Wi Hi a better - rather than perfect - school, the TOM TOM also looks to the future for that first, perfect year ... But for the time at hand, let’s stop looking at years, perfection, and all the rest; let’s start looking at some good WI Hl’ers; let’s look at the 1969 TOM TOM. W. A. As freshmen, we chose for our first Homecoming representative Debbie Hastings. Surprising upperclass¬ men, we built the prize winning float. Marcella Van Horn was the Winter Carnival representative, while Aniko Barakso and Judi Fries attended the May Dance, in our behalf. Returning in September, Jerry Knapp and Terry Messick became the first members of ' 69 to hold Stu¬ dent Council offices - Treasurer and Secretary. As Homecoming rolled around again, we chose Vicki Wil¬ son as our attendant; and we again had the winning float. Penny Atkinson represented us at the Winter Car¬ nival and Tamara Wootten and Judi Fries attended the May Dance. Reaching the rank of Junior, we elected as officers: T. J. Mumford, President; Susan Veise. Vice Pres¬ ident; Judi Fries, Secretary; and Frank Veditz, Treasurer. Representing our class as Student Council offi¬ cers were Steve Brewer, Second Vice President; Vicki Wilson, Third Vice President; and Debbie Hastings, Secretary. At Homecoming, Tamara Wootten represented the Junior Class. A month later on a cold Thanksgiving Day, we defeated Bennett, 14-13; and a football dance followed in honor of the victorious Indians. Our long-awaited class rings finally arrived, giving us the true feeling of belonging. Judi Fries was the representative at the Winter Carnival, and Ceola Walker and Penny Atkinson were the May Dance attendants. Next came the Junior-Senior Banquet, and we bade departing Seniors farewell. Then, at last, we were SENIORS. From the beginning, there was a new feeling in the air. Wi-Hi received a new principal, and new practices such as a Wi-Hi-Bennett exchange day and a joint dance were introduced. The Senior Class officers were elected; and the results showed Bemie Murphy, President; Joe Layton, Vice President; Vicki Wilson, Secretary; Jud Vollmer, Treasurer; and Mary Strandquist, Historian. Serving as Student Council officers were Steven Brewer, President; Bill Haslam, Susan Smith, Bemie Murphy and Jerry Knapp. At the Homecoming victory, Tamara Wootten was crowned queen while Judi Fries and Susan Veise were the attendants. After weeks of practice, the Senior Class proudly presented The Stuck Pot. After a disappointing Thanksgiving, we beat Bennett in basketball and moved to district playoffs. The Athletic Dance proved successful as did the Winter Carnival with Judi Fries as reigning queen. Jose Rodriguez was crowned Mr. Irresistible at the annual Twirp Dance. Penny Atkinson became May Queen, with Pam McDonald, Duchess; and Cindy Parker and Vicki Wilson, attendants. Editors of Wi-Hi s publications, Dave May, Indian Chant, Nanci Silvia, Tom-Tom, and Carol Weber, Wi-Hi News put out issues for the student body. We attended our last Junior-Senior banquet and wished the oncoming seniors the best of luck. The high points of the baseball season were victories over Bennett. The final climax came as the Senior Prom arrived and we danced on the shores of Blue Hawaii. Exams brought the year to an end. For some, graduation is the end of a struggle, for others a new responsibility, but for us all, it is the beginning of the future. Four long years? No, four short one s - filled with excitement, learning and growth. Even though certain faces and incidents will be forgotten as time passes, two things will always be in our minds and hearts: wonderful memories and the great Spirit of 69. Mary Strandquist Class Historian 32 Three Messages to the Class of 1969 I will remember you always as my first senior class. It has been a real personal pleasure to have known and worked with you. Your high school years have been historic ones. In your senior year, three brave Americans trav¬ eled around the moon. Exploration and discovery have been commonplace. You will now find that you must make your own exploration of the world, make your own discov¬ eries, shape your own triumphs, and endure your own tragedies. You will explore and enjoy the intri¬ cate, beautiful, and wonderful varieties of experience. I extend my heartiest congratulations to all of you. You have my highest hopes and best wishes for a good life. Very truly yours, W. Kenneth Smith I congratulate each of you for reaching this important milestone in your formal education. Com¬ mencement denotes not only graduation from high school but marks the time in your lives when paths become more individualistic and your goals and ambitions become more meaningful. My sincere hope is that each of you has developed basic educational skills, understandings, appre¬ ciation of your heritage and a strong sense of ethical values which will help you meet the challenges of the world in which we live. Sincerely yours, Dorothy H. Graham Your high school days have come to an end. Many were the times that you trudged to this institu¬ tion in order that you might be better equipped to cope with life in the future. When you look back upon those days, surely, you will cherish the memory of them. Now that you are ready to venture out on your own, the precepts and examples set forth, the many insights imparted through your courses, and the opportunities afforded for moral and spiritual growth, will come back to you. They will help to give you the courage and strength needed to face life. Just as your school days were not always pleasant ones, neither will be this life into which you are about to enter. It will be during these times that the knowledge your teachers tried to bestow upon you will be like a guiding light. You have my most sincere congratulations. May success and happiness be with you as you go forth in the world to undertake your chosen careers. For life is the mirror of king and slave, Tis just what you are and do; Then give to the world the best you have. And the best will come back to you. Sincerely, W. Franklin Waller 33 SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS: SEATED: Bernie Murphy, president; Judson Vollmer, treasurer; Joe Layton, vice president; STANDING: Vicki Wilson, secretary; and Mary Strandquist, historian. To emphasize specific parts of this over-all goal the club donated toys and clothes to the Salvation Army at Christmas. It also sent a poinsetta to Deer ' s Head Hospital. The FUTURE TEACHERS OF AMERICA CLUB provides an opportunity for interested students to explore their own in¬ terests and abilities in relation to the various fields of teaching and to cultivate in themselves the high qualities of per¬ sonality, character, scholarship, and leadership which are essential in good teachers. Throughout the year 1968-1969 the club performed various school services. Among these activities, Club members baby-sat at elementary schools, sold pennants, held a Christmas party, and visited Salisbury State College. In addition to activities, members can accumulate points to get a shield or pen by acting as an aide to a teacher. Officers were: Vicki Wilson, president; Tim Knapp, vice president; Mary Strandquist, secretary-treasurer, Sandra Ennis, point secretary; and Butch Bradley, program chairman. 102 DECA DECA identifies the Program of Youth Activity relating to DE - Distributive Education Clubs of America - and is designed to develop future leaders for marketing and distribution. DECA is the only national youth organization operating in the nation’s schools to attract young people to ca¬ reers in marketing and distribution. The emblem is in the shape of a diamond, with a wrapped package in the center. The point of the DECA em¬ blem symbolizes: Vocational understanding, Civic conscienceness, Social intelligence, and Leadership develop¬ ment. The activities the chapter has engaged in this school year are as follows: sold candy as a school project to add to the school ' s finances, sold candy at all football games as a way of raising money for the club, and the DE II group operated the school store at lunch time. Three voting delegates and one alternate attended the Fall State Leadership Conference in the election of state officers for this year. The club collected money, Kool-Aid, and Life Savers which were sent to Wicomico High graduates in Vietnam. Fifty-three slides were produced to be used to tell the story of DECA before civic and business organizations in Wicomico County. A picnic and hamburg fry at the beginning of the year and a party at Christmas were two recreation activities. The Chapter, with twenty-one Juniors in DE I, attended the Spring Leadership Conference and entered many of the contests. At the conference, the club won 2 firsts, 2 seconds, 2 thirds, and 2 honorable mentions. The highlight of the season was the Employer-Employee Banquet held this year at James M. AFS held several assemblies in which the student body met and spoke with many foreign exchange students in the area. A tea was held in October introducing Wi-Hi ' s exchange student from Chile, Jose Rodriguez, to the school. Jose was given tutoring in his studies; he was pro¬ vided transportation; and he was well-equipped with friends. To raise money for the support of future exchange students, AFS sponsored a raffle, a Twirp Dance, and a homeroom drive. AFS helped greatly in making Jose’s year at Wi-Hi a most memorable one. 110 Human Relations Club The HUMAN RELATIONS CLUB believes that the long-range goal of dealings among mankind should be unity through understanding. As such, the purpose of Human Relations Club activities over the past year has been to increase the mutual understanding among various groups within the community. Indeed, the activities performed and progress accomplished seem small when compared to the problems facing an increasingly complex, troubled world. Yet, only by building among individuals and groups a sense of community can progress ever be made towards eventual world peace. Activities over the 1968-1969 year have included entrance of a brotherhood display in the Homecoming parade, a joint Christmas party with the American Field Service, attendance of the annual NCCJ conference at Bennett High, the hosting of speakers representing the Catholic Church, American tourists in Europe, and the County Retarded Children’s Association, as well as two joint meetings with Bennett’s Human Relations Club. Members feel that definite progress has been made by means of these activities towards the ultimate goals of understanding and love among men. ROW 1: P. Elzey, Parliamentarian; M. Mem¬ bers of the club learn library skills and gain a knowledge which can benefit them for the rest of their lives. Meetings are held during activity period, with the privilege of meeting one more time during the month. Members give up their study halls and free time before and after school to work in the library. The LIBRARY CLUB involves hard work, but there is pleasure in it also. This year the club decorated the winning Homecoming car. The annual library trip in the Spring was the highlight of the year when the club traveled to Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The sponsor is Mrs. Phillips, the school librarian. Officers for the year were June Tingle, secretary- treasurer; Marsha Hamilton, vice president; Tamara Wootten, president. This year there are three seniors who have been members for four years.
