. TOM TOM ’68 MRS. RUTH H. MESSICK Team teaching. t Individual Instruction. We, the class of 1968 of Wicomico Senior High School dedicate our yearbook, the 1968 TOM-TOM, to Mrs. Ruth Messick, for her con¬ tributions to the education of young people, for her ever increasing loyalty to Wi-Hi, and for the endless services she has performed for our school and our class. 3 FACULTY MR. GEORGE H. CORDDRY To The Graduates of 1968 The brief years you have been at Wicomico Senior High School have been filled with action and drama. They have been years of rapid change for you intellectually and physically. You now leave high school only to cross the threshold of a life just as full of excitement as that you are leaving behind. Some of you will enter immedi¬ ately upon the responsibilities of adult life; others will embark on future years of preparation for more demanding occupations. All, I hope, have secured here at Wi Hi and from previous schools an ade¬ quate background for whatever lies ahead. May you face the coming years with joy and courage. And may you achieve success in all your best efforts! Best wishes to you all. George H. Corddry Principal t MRS. SAMUEL A. GRAHAM I congratulate the members of the Class of 1968 on reaching this milestone in your educational career. Following your commencement exercises some of you will pur¬ sue higher education, some of you will enter the business world, while others will join the armed forces. I trust that each of you has developed a sense of values which gives priority to the dignity of the individual, good citizenship, good scholarship, and a strong character. The changing conditions of our age will require a strong foundation in these principles and a corresponding determination to accept responsi¬ bilities as well as privileges. And to you who must meet the challenges of the ever changing world, I wish you the blessings of life as expressed in the words of Barbara Burrows: Whatever paths you follow, May these blessings come your way— Cherished friends and loved ones To brighten every day, Work that makes you happy, Rest that makes you strong. A sense of humor to see you through Whenever things go wrong, The strongest faith, the brightest hope That heaven can impart, Serenity and wisdom, An understanding heart, An awareness of life ' s beauty, An answer to your prayers, And the blessed reassurance That God understands and cares. Naturally we had questions and doubts, but soon the halls didn ' t seem quite so long and the upperclassmen quite so towering. When offered our first chance to be a part of our school, we accepted by joining in the various clubs and athletic activities. In the fall, we suddenly found ourselves searching for a worthy Homecoming attendant. We chose Terri Smith. Later, Joan Johson represented us at the Winter Carnival and Donna Littleton and Debby Proffitt at the May Dance. Returning as Juniors in September, we felt just slightly superior to those a grade behind us. Now we were ready to accept the responsibilities and privileges of the new year. A challenge like this called for leaders. At the end of the election day the announcement was made: Bill Malone, President; Suzanne Duckwitz, Vice President; Gail Hastings, Secretary; and Virlee Gordy, Treasurer. This was also the first opportunity to have members of our class as Student Council officers. Proudly we watched as Steve Kirkpatrick, second Vice President, and Joan Jo hnson, third Vice President, worked in this organization. We bestowed the honor of Homecoming attendant upon Suzanne Esham. For the Winter Carnival we elected Debby Proffitt. The voting process once again working, we chose June Holloway and Donna Little¬ ton as the May Dance attendants. On March 16th, 17th, and 18th, after much labor in the theatrical world, we presented The Remarkable Incident at Carson Corners to Wi Hi. At the Junior-Senior Banquet we toasted the departing Seniors and secretly dreamed of the year to come. Finally we were meeting them--all the joys and hopes that only a senior can know. In the months to follow we were to know what it was to make memories. From the Class of ’68 Jon Messick served the Student Council well as President. The nomina¬ tions were made and class officers included: Matt O ' Connell, President; Barbara Heller, Vice President; June Holloway, Secretary; Virlee Gordy, Treasurer; and Jeannie Phillips, Historian. Homecoming was a success from the team ' s victory to the Senior Class Float ' s victory. Queen Donna Littleton was attended by June Hol¬ loway and Terri Smith. At the end of the season, we were the first Senior Class to have the pleasure of attending the new Football Dance. On Thanksgiving Day a certain 92 yard kick put Wi Hi ahead of Bennett when the clock finally stopped. Winter Carnival Queen Cathy Jackson shared the spotlight with Agnes Paris, our ex¬ change student from Belgium. In the literary field Marilyn Davis, TOM TOM; Dick Shaw and Allison Wootten, WI HI NEWS; and Jeannie Phillips and Gail Sickmund, INDIAN CHANT; worked diligently. Still roaming the halls of Wi Hi is a giant white rabbit named Harvey. He escaped during a play practice for Harvey presented on December 7th and 8th. The year began to race to an end. With the May Dance approaching, we elected Queen Virlee Gordy and Duchesses June Holloway and Judy Howard. On May 24th we traveled to Williamsburg for a taste of colonial living. The Senior Prom was held on May tenth. Amidst flowers and tiny gardens we danced into an Endless Summer. As in years before, the Juniors wished us good fortune at the annual banquet. Now we have graduated--terminated our studies at Wi Hi. Yet we will never terminate the sense of responsibility and the memories we have shared here. Al¬ though we are now individuals out in the world, in our hearts we will still always be a part of the Class of ' 68. Playing the underdog role in nearly every con¬ test, the Indians climaxed a great season with the school ' s first football victory over Bennett, 14-13.
