Thirty‘four StniOR CLASS HISTORy FRESHMAN YEAR f At last, we have reached that peak of all our thoughts, entering Wicomico High School as Freshies. The Home Rooms in which we were engulfed that year included 3, 5, 8, 12, 13, 17, 24, and 30. We came up against quite a bit of confusion when much to our dismay the school had more rooms than anticipated. Many of our classmates took part in Glee Club, May Day, and Variety Show activities. Field Day was also a grand climax for our first year of high school life. Lonesomeness, however, was definitely not in our category; there were two-hundred and ninety Freshmen enrolled. SOPHOMORE YEAR Coming back to Wi-Hi as Sophomores, we engaged in different sports, Glee Club and and another musical, The Footlight Revue ' under the capable direction of Miss Sara G. Adkins. Our homerooms this year were 3, 5, 9, 30, 31, and 33. After a long-awaited summer vacation we hoped to return to better work, more activities and future pleasant memories. JUNIOR YEAR Big Wheel Juniors at last! This was a big year for all of us. We took part in Junior- Varsity, and Intramural Sports such as Basketball, Football, Baseball, Fieldball, and Soccer. One-hundred and ninety-three in number we participated in other activities besides sports. Student Council, Glee Club and Ensemble, Wi-Hi News Staff, Press Club, and May Day were a few more interesting and entertaining extra-curricular activities. One of the main events of the year was the election of Class Officers—these included Joan Stauch, President; Walter Phipps, Vice-President; Mary McDonough, Secretary; Douglas Parsons, Treasurer; and Mary Earle Nock, Historian. Our Junior Class Play Sixteen in August was a hugh suc¬ cess and very entertaining for average teen-agers. The Junior-Senior Banuet proved great fun for all who attended. Jimmy Wilson, a Sophomore and our school magician, performed many interesting and amusing feats of magic proving that the hand is quicker than the eye. A dance which followed the Banquet proved successful with a large turnout. We leave our Junior year with fond memories and pleasant hopes for our best and final year as students of Wicomico High—as Seniors. SENIOR YEAR Alas, we have reached that final and most remembered year of the sophisticated Seniors — one hundred and sixty-nine returned in September of 1947 to homerooms 3, 5, 9, 27, and 30. Class officers elected were Douglas Parsons, President; Edward Stephens, Vice President; Mary Louise White, Secretary; Ann Robins, Treasurer; and Betty Johnson, Historian. The newspaper was edited by Mary Louise White, and Joan Stauch presided over the Student Council. Each Senior homeroom was represented by two Seniors at the Student Council. Faculty advisor was Miss Audrey Stewart. Athletics were under the cap¬ able direction of Miss Edythe Trigiani and Coach A1 Romansco. Coach Seidel was the direg- Thirty-five tor of Varsity Basketball for Boys. Mr. Eagler, our Music Director, made plans for an op¬ eretta, the Feast of the Little Lanterns ' a Chiness Musical Pageant. The Senior ' s Class Play, Double Exposure, was under the capable guidance of Miss Erwood. The Senior Prom, Junior-Senior Banquet, May Day, and Graduation were all eagerly awaited. Thus, we, the class of 1948, do leave Wicomico High with the staunch realization that these have been the best years, days, and moments of our lives. We extend our deepest re¬ gards and fond apprciation to the Faculty and Principal who have given to us unceasing guidance and time to our ever-present problems. Historian, Betty Johnson MOTTO—Ability and Effort Pilot Us to Success. COLORS—Red and White. FLOWER—Red Rose . CLASS HULL Hear ye! Hear ye! UII-HI Sfflff flflD PRfSS CLUB This year the Wi-Hi News which was first published in 1937 under the editorship of Audrey Stewart, present faculty member, reached its eleventh year of publication. This school paper is edited by an editor and associate editor elected by popular vote of high school students and a staff appointed by the editor-in-chief. Unlike many school papers, the Wi-Hi News is printed in a downtown printing shop and is operated as an extra-curricular activity. The staff published an edition of the paper about every two weeks. This year ' s editor- in-chief was Mary Louise White and the associate editor was Betty Jane Long. An extra job of the Wi-Hi News is to sponsor a Press Club. As stated in the constitu¬ tion the associate editor of the Wi-Hi News shall become president of the Press Club. Its officers this year were: President, Betty Jane Long; Vice President, Mary Earle Nock; Secretary-Trea surer, Anne Reed. The Press Club sponsored in February a George Washing¬ ton ' s birthday dance for the entire school. The dance was a great success and appreciated by everyone. Fifty-nine Top row: J. Watson, R. The Senior Ensemble was especially active this year. In the fall several girls were chosen to sing with the all-state Glee Club at a Maryland teachers ' meeting in Baltimcre. The girls also sang at the Business and Professional Club, Wicomico Women ' s Club, and at some of the local service clubs. At Christmas they sang at the Parson ' s Home for the aged and at the Peninsula General Hospital. Also at Christmas they presented a radio broadcast in front of the Court House and a Christmas assembly at school. The Ensembles have sung at May Day, Commencement, and presented an operetta entitled The Feast of the Little Lanterns. Sixty Top roiv: J. Hastings, D. Parsons, L. Rademaker, W. Gravenor, R. Seventy-two High School Graduates of ' 48 Here ' s Your Future Graduation need not mean the end of your education. Those of you who choose the U. S. Army or U. S. Air Force for a career may obtain the equivalent of two years of college credit by signing up for extension or correspondence cours¬ es in the United States Armed Forces Institute. As for the graduate interested in a trade, he will find just what he is looking for in the more than 60 technical schools of the U. S. Army and U. S. Air Force. What makes this academic and technical schooling so attractive — aside from the knowledge gained — is that it is absolutely free to anyone enlisting. While you continue your education the government pays you a salary higher than many a civilian scale. It also provides a chance to visit and study in foreign countries, while all the time you are becoming eligible for retirement after 20 years. Before you make your final choice of a career, it would pay you to look into the wonderful opportunities that are available in the U. S. Army or U. S. Air Force.
