The story of Kansas began 79 years before the Pilgrims landed on Plymouth Rock. Coronado rode north from Mexico as far as Central Kansas in 1541. Three centuries later, William Becknell opened the Santa Fe Trail which stretched 750 miles from the Missouri River to Santa Fe, New Mexico, with 500 miles of it in Kansas. On May 30, 1854, President Pierce signed the Kansas-Nebraska Bill creating the territory of Kansas, thus opening it to settlement. On January 29, 1861, Kansas was admitted to the Union, During the Civil War, Kansas was plagued by Indian uprisings in the west and guerrilla warfare in the east. After the Civil War, the railroads prompted the beginning of the Chisholm Trail along which longhorn cattle were driven from Texas to Abilene for shipment to the East. Then came the settle- ment of 'western Kansas as peace was made with the Indians. ' ,.... .fr - ..,at,,, 7 9 Years Ago Eisenhower HOME
