The Student Forum Nationally knovvn speakers, variety of subject matter, and open Forum discussions Y these ele- ments compose the Student Forum, organized in 1936 and novv an integral part ol the University. Sidney Martin, executive secretary, directed the vvork oi the Forum this year, aided by an advisory board of forty students. Authoritative speakers whom the Student Forum brought to the campus this year vvere: Vincent Sheean, tvvo English debaters, l-l. R. Knicker- bocker, Dr. George Earle Raiguel, Dr. l-lovvard l-laggard, Sigmund Spaeth, and Thomas l'lart Benton. Got Under Way First oi the Forum speakers was Vincent Sheean, author ol best-sellers Hpersonal Qpinionfi and ulXlot peace But a Sword, who spoke Thursday, November Q3, Throughout 1938 and part ol 1939 Sheean was a foreign correspondent in Europe, and was on the scene ol the crises which precipitated this latest war. Listeners liked his quiet humorous presentation and dis- cussed at length his theory that, lor the next Fifteen or twenty years, the world is in lor a series oi wars. Second presentation was a debate between Britishers Victor l-lugh Parkinson and George J, Bean, and Uni- versity students Walter Tait and Robert Baird, subject was Hlsolationf, Students crammed the Commons lounge afterward to Further question, and discuss international relations with the two Englishmen. Best liked was l'l. R. Knickerbocker, third Forum speaker. Knickerbocker, a Foreign war correspondent and inter- national commentator, was in Czechoslovakia at the time of the Munich attair, in Poland when Warsaw tell, and on the Western iront until late in 1939. A dinner lor the executive board of the Forum preceded Knickerbockeris speech. Cn March 7, Dr, George Earle Raiguel, known lor his part in discussion lectures with the New York Town l-lall and the Chicago Town l-lall ot the Air, appeared here. Two weeks later the Forum presented Dr. Howard l-laggard who is professor ot applied physiology at Vale University and author oi the currently popular Ulhe Lame, the l-lalt and the Blindn and UDevils, Drugs, and Doctorsf' Most entertaining lecturer was Sigmund Spaeth, tune detective. Qld tunes which sound new and new tunes which are really old, how to play the piano in tive minutes, and the origin ol famous songs, all were ex- plained by lVlr. Spaeth. Final speaker was Thomas l-lart Benton, much discussed contemporary artist, who painted the murals for the Missouri capitol building and the recent controversial picture, Hguzanna and the Eldersf' These men, representing the Fields ot music, art, medicine, debate, and international relations, were brought to University students to Fill the need For new personalities and lresh stimulating ideas.
