[ Barnett M A, Deputy hupennlendent 124 Faculty As this school year comes to a close, the teachers and the administrators of Wichita Falls High School hope that each student has developed the mental, moral and physical well-being to take his place in soci- ety. We must be prepared to become involved with the problems of society and life. We must be able to enjoy success and happiness without forgetting that there will be times of failure and sadness. We must be strong enough to recognize and respond to the needs of others and humble enough to accept help when we need it. It we are to be successful, whole persons, we must become involved in life as it truly is and not hide ourselves in a dream world. ri-Uyyi tu2 lu iMp irL ' A Faculty 125 CURRICULUM No other high school in this area provides as wide a variety of curricular activities as does WFHS. THE ' 72 C0Y0TF9 WIN RECORD Coyote football teams have a reputation to uphold. It is part of their heritage. The 1972 Coy- otes have taken their place in that heritage, and have added to that reputation. The 72 Coyotes brought the District crown honrie for the seventh straight time and fought their way into the State playoffs for the twenty-ninth time. This is an unprecedented record. Though the Coyotes dominated the All-District selections, the 6-AAAA champions were not a team of superstars, but rather a balanced squad of players, who worked together. The season started, as usual, against Lubbock Coronado, and the Coyotes proved their strength with a 35-14 victory over the Panhandlers. The ne, ' week the Coyotes journeyed to Amarillo for a gam that proved two things: the mighty Coyotes could be beaten, and this team would not give up. Though touchdowns were called back, they kept trying, and only the clock defeated them. The 7-13 defeat was the first regular season loss since 1 969, and the only one in ' 72. The third week of football was against cross- town Hirschi, and the 14-6 victory proved the Coy- otes were back on the right track. District started the next week, and L. D. Bell fell by 28-6, a margin much greater than the score indicated. Castleberry and Haltom were next in line, and the scores of 48-0 and 41-0 reflect how exceedingly well the Coyotes were playing. Week number seven of the season sent the Coy- otes to Mineral Wells to face a fired-up team that possessed an explosive offense and visions of a District crown. That offense put fifteen points on 240 Football Ricky Garnett, Daniel Edelman, Neil Lummus. Marvin Thompson, Richard Mesa, 7th STRAIGHT DISTRICT CROWN the board and stunned the Coyotes, but only tor a while. In the fourth quarter, trailing by fifteen points, the Coyotes made one of their greatest comebacks ever and tied the game to keep in the District running. Richland, the District leader, was next. They played a good game for one half; but in the sec- ond half the Coyote line came into its own and blew the Rebels out to the tune of 31-7. Trinity, the warm-up to Rider, was next, and fell easily, 44-0. Now was the highpoint of the season, the game with ROHO on the hill. In the cold, rai n, and hail at Memorial Stadium, both teams played the hard, bit- ter football they always play together The Coyotes were denied touchdowns several times, but in the end came out victorious by 12-7, a score that really did not reflect the extent of their victory. Bi-District against Odessa Permian was the elev- enth game of the season, and a memorable one. The second-ranked Mojo could not keep their offense rolling against the Coyote defense, but the Coyote offense could not move either. Only a punt taken back all the way by Permian made the score 0-7 at half-time. In the second half, Mojo scored only when the Coyote defense was dead tired. Though exhausted, the Coyotes played to the very end, never giving up. Permian ' s victory that night, 14-0, was a much closer game than the State Championship game they later won with ease. The 1972 Coyotes, with an 8-2-1 record and a point total of 275 to 72, were a proud team. Cer- tainly they had much to be proud of Football 241 COYOTE COACHING 9TAFF First row Doyce Walker, Royce Heller, Marcus Goodrich, Donnell Crosslin Second row Hubert Marvel, Ed Marion, Jack Vantrease, Don Phillips, Bill Page iUMUMiJaaai ' P I i.
