Bradley In his seventeen years at Wichita Falls High School, Mr. Bradley has always been a favorite teacher. His sense of humor, his warm friendliness, and his genuine concern for his students all combine with his excellent teaching abilities to make him one of our most outstanding instructors. While there can never be enough said or done to express our appreciation of him, the Annual Staff takes pleasure in dedicat- ing this 1972 Coyote to this remarkable man. B OF EDUCZYHON First row: Mrs. Laura T. Doingg Dr, joe Steed, presidentg Gerald H. Hodges. Second row: Richard O. Harris, J. Phillips Cunningham, Dr. Carl Davis, jack E. Bear- den. G. H. KIRBY, M.A. Superintendent of Wichita Falls Public Schools THOMAS F. BARNETT, M.A. Deputy Superintendent The members of the Board of Edu- cation, through their sincere interest in the Wichita Falls Independent School District, give abundantly of their time and efforts to maintain the high stan- dards of education in our city. Al- though they, the superintendent, and the other administrators at the central office on Holliday Street may be little known by most of us students, they are interested in us as individuals and are dedicated to their responsibility of seeing that we obtain the best educa- tion possible. Faculty 19 20 Faculty I Since the first graduating class of Wichita Falls High School received their diplomas in 1892 thousands of young people have passed through our school and taken their places in the largest society. Each class, regardless of its numbers or abilities, has contributed to our growth into a modern educational institution. Many more changes will develop in the next eighty years, but the students of 1972 will leave a part of themselves to the traditions of our school. Buildings will change, new customs will develop, and society will influence the curriculum, but the intangible spirit of all who have passed through its hallways and classrooms as students and teachers will continue to develop pride and loyalty to Wichita Falls High School. Hwaivf-dfayd 1 PIZINCDIP The principals of Wichita Falls High School have the often diffi- cult, but highly rewarding, job of leading the school in a way that will maintain order and unity while doing the greatest good for the most people, students and teachers alike. We, the students of 1971-1972, are grateful to Mr. Hunter Kirkpat- rick, with Mr. William Jeter and Mr. Ervin Garnett, for their unfailing dedication to this purpose. HUNTER KIRKPATRICK, M.S. All-Southern All-American SWC Blue Chipper 254 Football 1971 OOYOTEQ - FINALIQIQ With only two starters returning from last year's great Coyote team, the Pack's fans did not expect great things from their team in 1971. The Coyotes were not even pre-season picks to win district after taking the crown the five previous years. Fortunately, there were forty-two young men who did not believe what they read in the newspaper. After last year's heart-breaking loss in bi-district, Coyote players that would return for another year signed a pledge that they would prove the Pack could come back. These Coyotes and new members from the Pups and Rowdies worked hard during the spring and summer to prepare for the oncoming season. Finally, the day came that these Coyotes had long awaited. On September 11, after weeks of hot August practices, the Pack traveled to Lubbock and recorded a convincing victory over Coronado. Our team came into the state's limelight two weeks later with a 46-7 smashing over number-three ranked Abilene Cooper in their own stadium. The Pack grew stronger every week and was well prepared to begin their campaign for the first step to the state playoffs - the district title. After Richland had upset Rider, the pre- season district favorite, the stage was set for the showdown between the Coyotes and the Rebels for the district cham- pionship. The Pack played magnificently and sent the Rebs home with a 34-14 defeat. The following week came the highlight of the gridiron season in Wichita Falls - the Coy- ote-Rider game. Rider was looking for its first victory over The High School in six years, but they again left the stadium disappointed. Rider was held scoreless until the closing min- utes and did not even earn a first down until late in the third quarter. With a 41-14 victory over the Raiders, the Pack was in the playoffs for the sixth straight year. The Coyote machine kept on rolling and kepf on winning, caring little if it performed on the artificial turf of Memorial Stadium or in the snow of the Texas panhandle. The Coyotes came from behind to win, they fought off last minute come- backs to win, they battled blizzards to win, they scored in the closing minutes to win, they did everything that was neces- sary to win four playoff games and earn a spot in the state fi- nals. The Coyotes then traveled to Irving to meet San Anto- nio Lee for the state championship in the first high school game to be played in the new and exquisite Texas Stadium. The Coyotes were chosen to win their second state champion- ship game over Lee in three years, but Fate had decided to deny The High School this honor. Lee's passing pushed them to a 21-6 lead, but as previously demonstrated, the Pack would never give up. The Coyotes' ball control offense and Red River Roughneck defense played as they never had be- fore. Soon the Pack owned a 27-21 lead. With only a few minutes remaining, the Roughnecks did something they were not accustomed to doing - allowed the opponent to score. A last-second effort by the Coyotes failed, and the final, heart- breaking score was Coyotes - 27, Lee - 28. Even usually unemotional sport writers and broadcasters were moved by the Coyotes, stirring comeback attempt and claimed this game to be the most exciting state championship ever. Although the Coyotes did not win their seventh state championship, their accomplishments were many. The Coy- otes won fourteen straight games, a feat of which few teams could boast. The 1971 Coyotes were not a team of super stars and individualists, but a dedicated and closely-knit group whose only goal was to win. A goal to win not only for the glory of victory, but also a goal to win to prove it does not take a team of super stars to be champions. The Coyotes were not state champs, the goal they set for themselves the preced- ing year, nevertheless, they proved their point well, very well. Let it never be said the Pack could not come back. According to Ed Lane, Wichita Falls Record News sports writer, . . . it was the greatest victory since George Washington won the battle of Yorktown as the Coy- otes defeated Richland 71-69 to claim their first District 6-AAAA championship in a decade? The mighty Coyotes really proved that the Pack is Back. Early in the season the Coyotes combined their efforts and took first place in the Burkburnett Tournament and third in the Caprock. One of the most exciting events of the season was the second victory over the Rider Raiders. Wichita Falls High was in a three-way tie with Rider and Richland for district honors. The Raiders led most of the game, but the Coyotes came from twenty points behind to claim the victory late in the fourth quarter. Richland was the last obstacle on the road to the district crown. Although the Reb- els had the advantage in size, the two teams were equally matched in talent. The first play-off game was in Richland, and after a hard-fought battle the Coyotes came home victorious. The second game of the three-game play-off was in Coyote Field- house, but the Coyotes were defeated. As a result, a third game was played in Den- ton. After the Coyotes built up an early lead, the Rebels surged back to cut the spread to two points, but Wichita Falls was able to run out the last few seconds and wrap up the play-off and the district championship. As the yearbook goes to press, the Coyote record stands at 20-9. Abilene is the site of the bi-district game against Midland as the Pack moves into state play-offs.
