The 1968 Coyotes carried on the tradition of winning and in doing so, brought the 1968 district title to WFHS. The season opener was against the Coronado Mustangs from Lubbock. Coronado fumbled on the opening kick- off, and junior Glen Fischer lumped on the ball in the Mustang end zone for a quick six points. Coronado came back with an unbroken 80-yard drive in 12 plays to knot the score. The Coyotes drove to the Coronado 8-yard line in the second quarter, but a field goal at- tempt failed on a high snap from center. The remainder of the game was a defensive struggle as neither team managed to tilt the scoreboard in the 7-7 tie. An old rivalry with Amarillo High was revived Sep- tember 20. Although the score was 20-0 against the Pack, the statistics showed a different story. The Red and Black totaled 20 first downs to the Sandies' 12. Jackie Bird was the workhorse, gaining 106 hard-earned yards. Bryan Lancaster and Barry Minnick added 71 and 61 yards, respectively. The Coyote offense and defense combined to bury the Sherman Bearcats 35-19 on September 27. Lancaster boot- legged his way to 191 yards and three touchdowns while Gordy Brown, Joey Aboussie, Bird, and Minnick rounded out the Coyote field attack, gaining 446 total yards. The offensive line, led by John Martin, Arthur Ramos, Charles I40 Holley, and Fred Currin, knocked huge holes in the l cat defense, making possible a balanced Coyote ning game. The Coyotes came off their first victory ready to counter Hirschi's Huskies in Coyote Canyon. The scored the first time they got the ball as Bird capped 80-yard drive with a 2-yard plunge. Hirschi then verted three Pack mistakes into a 21-6 lead in third quarter. The Coyotes fought back valiantly could manage only one other score as Lancaster sne one yard for the final TD and a resulting 21-12 s On November 11 the Coyotes traveled to Denison engage the Yellow Jackets in a final tune-up for di play. Aboussie's 6-yard iaunt to paydirt and Lancas 4-yard plunge put the Pack on top 13-O to end the ond quarter. A thrilling 89-yard sprint by Lancaster a quick 62-yard run by Raymond McCoy highlig the Coyote's offensive thrust in the last half. Lanc had his best night of the season as he picked his way 219 yards, but the real show was put on by the fensive line. Mark Akin, Vince Gunn, Steve Miller, l Weeks, and Monty Moore held the Yellow Jackets remarkable minus 31 yards rushing. The Coyotes opened district play against the Ca berry Lions. The 58-0 victory began the Pack's bid supremacy in the newly organized District 5-4A. caster and Aboussie led the Coyote ground game, tg A r. f 5 F , M I 'ies :EE I 579 ' Nez zsiygzzl-N sas '12 5. 425 v is , ird row: Terry Roberts, Mgr., Rowdy Swinford, Quanah Gray, Art Lee, Greg Sampson, Joe Nelms, Bryan Lancaster, Steve Newman, e Golding, Jackie Bird, Charles Holley, Alan Hart, Raymond McCoy, Coach Donnell Crosslin. Fourth row: Johnny Pigg, Vince Gunn, Monty bore, Brad Kaelin, Fred Currin, Robert Cunningham, Mark Akin, Dan Parham, Tom Black, Mike Weeks. . New District 5 -4A ie Golding spearheaded the defense as he scored on 1 interception. The last half was dominated by the Eyote substitutes as the Green Lizards racked up 26 ints in a superb effort. Richland, a main hurdle to the district crown, fell to e tune of 14-O as the Coyotes proved that the best lefense is a grinding offense. Going 90 yards in 17 lays, the Coyotes ate up almost 12 minutes of the fst half and climaxed the drive with a 12-yard score by 'ncaster. The Pack defense then held off the Rebel's glanced attack until the Coyotes began their last drive ith 9:30 left in the 4th quarter. ln 21 clock-chewing ays the massive offense pushed 78 yards, ending ith Bird's one yard plunge and leaving but 34 seconds tt the withered clock. Haltom was the next Coyote victim on the Red and lack's drive for the 5-4A crown. The offense and de- nse combined to hand the Buffaloes a sound 34-O feat. Five Coyotes took part in the scoring as a bal- Eced infantry attack proved too much for the out- assed Buffs. WFHS took a break from district competition to play 'idland Lee's Rebels November 8. The game proved to e a stunning surprise as the Coyote offense sputtered Ir the first time since the season's opener. Fumbles ere the main enemy of the Pack as the ball bounced vry. The Red and Black scored first as they trapped a Rebel ball carrier in his endzone for a 2-point safety. But Midland's fine passing attack opened the way for a suc- cessful running game as the two combined to hand the Coyotes a 17-8 loss. The most crucial game of district play pitted WFHS against cross-town rival, Rider. Coyote Stadium was a misty, muddy plateau when the Coyotes and Raiders faced off. Rider hit hard and fast, but the Pack defense stopped every scoring threat. Aboussie, giving an out- standing effort, teamed with Bird, Golding, and tough linebacker Andy Lee in leading the defense in a O-0 tie and a berth in the state playoffs. For bi-district honors, the Coyotes faced an old rival, the Irving Tigers. The Pack opened with a 73-yard drive capped by Lancaster's score, The Tigers came back with three quick scores and a 14-point lead. The Red and Black then began its most spirited play of the year. The Coyotes rallied for three TD's and a 28-21 lead behind Bird's two scores. An Irving touchdown tied the score and set the stage for a replay of last year's heart-break- ing loss to Amarillo Tascosa. Behind on penetrations, the Coyotes allowed an Irving touchdown to gain pos- session of the ball, but the strategy failed as the Pack never regained the pigskin. The 35-28 score ended the high school football careers for 20 seniors but set a spirited example for the '69 Coyotes. l4I MORRIS MERCER Coach Morris Mercer, seldom seen on the battlefield each Fri- day night, viewed the games from his seat in the press box. Yet it was often due to his football knowledge that the Coyotes were able to snatch victory from the hands of defeat. I42 DONNELL CROSSLIN Coach Donnell Crosslin, skilled head coach of the Coyotes, has proven himself a true leader. His coaching tactics and knowledge produced impressive statistics- those of a District Champion. The '68 Coyotes thank Coach Crosslin for making them the team they were. rs Coyote. BILL JETER Coach Bill Jeter, serving his first year as a Coyote mentor, success- fully molded his defensive line- men into the most feared stoppers in 5-4A. Wild Bill was well re- spected by the Coyote players, and his devotion was typical of a District Champion. COACH OF THE YEAR For the third consecutive year, Coach Donnell Crosslin has led the Coyotes to the pionship. The '68 crown was a prized one for Cross- lin and his staff, for it was the first in the reorga- nized District 5-AA. The head Coyote mentor began the '68 championship race with only four returning regulars and a team lacking the experience of true champions, but his exceptional dedication and effort produced an undefeated title holder. For his out- standing devotion to the Coyotes and WFHS, Coach Crosslin was iustly selected by his fellow 5-4A coach- es as the District's COACH OF THE YEAR.
