While WFHS maintains high academic standards above all else, there are numerous extracurricular activities which do more than broaden our educational experiences. These activities make our school days, days of pleasure by creating an enioyable atmosphere in which to work. Recognizing these many organizations and activities, we select The Brighter Side of School Life as the theme ot the 1964 Coyote. 1 'J s As our world becomes more complex, the challenge left to young people increases. However, the nature of youth is such that each generation welcomes the challenge and responds to it with gladness. It is the temperament of young people to be glad even in the midst of complexities, for youth is a time of fun, a season of blue skies and high hopes for a bright future. lt is a time of preparation, a chance for study and for an increase in knowledge ofthe mysteries of the world. Most of all, youth is a time of experiences and decisions that largely determine the course of adult life. Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote, When Duty whispers low, 'Thou must,' the youth replies, 'I can. ' lt is with pride that the staff dedicates the l964 Coyote to young people around the world who are experiencing these ioys and challenges. JIM SVAJDA, B.A. Texas Woman's University Midwestern University North Texan State University English One method by which one may expand his understanding of our culture is to study the basic concepts under- lying our life. An excellent way to achieve this goal is to study the literary works of both ancient and contemporary writers in order to view their expressions of life. Similarly, one develops mental acumen by learning to express himself and his ideas clearly and concisely. By means of a well-rounded four-year program of literature and grammar, the Department of English of Wichita Falls High School seeks to instill and develop these abilities in its students. The Department of English is also responsible for noting and preserving all achievements and changes in Coyote land through its three news media: The Coyote, The Coyote News, and Teen Times. Since history is being made each day and our methods of government are being improved, students are challenged to keep up with the happenings. Even the newest textbooks are supplemented by The American Observer to give up-to-date political information. Maps, charts, and films provide a clearer understanding of historical places and events. Daily newspapers are used to give news as it happens to keep students aware of the events around them. This department realizes that to understand, one must first be kept informed. Appeal of the Great Spirit was presented to the Wichita Falls Junior College, which was housed along with the high school in our present building. The presentation was made by Mr. and Mrs. Saul Lebenson. The original statue, of which this one is a replica, stands in front of the Library of Boston, Massachusetts. The statue, made of the finest American bronze, measures three feet and four inches high. From its stand of Texas Red Granite the Indian guarded the halls of W.F.H.S. for thirty-eight years before its presentation to Mid- western University. The Senior Class of 1963, with the direction of Bobby Harbison, president, secured the new bronze Coyote statue. The cast was made by the Potter Art Metal Studio of Dallas, Texas, with Mr. H. C. Potter as artist. On January 3, 1964, Harbison and several other seniors of 1963 presented the Coyote to the school. The members of the Coyote football team will forever be indebted to Coaches Kirkpatrick, Johnson, and Crosslin for inspirational guidance and leadership dur- ing the 1963 football season. The i963 Wichita Falls Coyote football team compiled an enviable 7-2-l record. The Coyotes were a fine but puzzling team. Their play ranged from bril- liance to occasional mediocrity. With unlimited potential, they were a great 'Foot- ball team at Irving, a poor one at Haltom City, and a good, but at times lax one at Grand Prairie. However, we cannot iudge the team by what might have hap- pened with a little more luck, we can only iudge it by what did happen. The Coyotes defeated seven tough football teams, won second place in district 4-AA, and earned the respect of all their opponents. TOMMY DEAN LARRY FLOURNOY Coyote managers Tommy Deen, and Larry Flournoy worked many long hours to help make the 'l9E3'season, a successful one. Captain Ted Stuart, along with co-captains Joe Fowler, Jimmy Powers, and John Runge, showed fine leadership qualities throughout the 1963 season. Their example served as an inspiration to each of the members of the team. The Pampa Harvesters were ready for the Coyotes, and for three long quarters held them to a 7-6 game. Then Don Hanvey broke the game open with a 61-yard punt return. Mike McBride scored three plays later. The Coyotes soon re- gained possession of the ball and sent McBride 65 yards for his second touch- down. The final Coyote score was set up by a pass from Pat Alexander to John Runge. Alexander then scored the last touchdown of the night. Mike McBride rambles against Pampa. Coyotes 13 Sandies 0 In their second outing the Coyotes faced a traditional rival, Amarillo. This was truly the finest hour of the Coyote defense. It held the Sandies to six first downs and a mere 79 yards rushing. The Coyotes scored twice, both times on short blasts by Jim Powersy but it was fine defensive play that set up the scores. In some instances the Coyote offense looked good, but it proved too inconsistent to be oustancling. As the game ended, the Coyotes were on the Amarillo 'IO-yard line as a result of a 55-yard punt return by Don Hanvey. The first half of the game, the Coyote offense could be described only as great, but, as in the past, if was a defensive play that gave the Coyotes the ball on the Broncho 45-yard line. From that point, Jim Powers made a spectacular run of 55 yards. He took the ball going left, used his interference perfectly, and galloped across the goal line. After the Coyotes kicked off, the defense held, and Odessa punted. The Coyotes took the ball and behind the blocking of Joe Fowler, Wade King, Sam Bashara, and David Cargill, rolled over the Bronchos for a second score. Pat Alexander tallied the touchdown. The second half belonged entirely to the Bronchos with the exception of a beau- tiful runback of an intercepted pass by John Runge for six points. Lawton's Gene Cagle ran the opening kickoff back to the Coyotes' fourteen yard line and scored three plays later, Lawton continued to dominate the first half, but it was a different story in the final two quarters. Mike McBride put on one of the greatest aerial shows in Coyote history. He completed i4 of I6 passes, most of them to lanky end Jack Pennington. Jimmy Powers, the sparkplug of the Coyote running game throughout the second half, finally scored on a one-yard dive over guard Willie McKee. However, Jerry Byas' extra point attempt was partially blocked, and Lawton escaped with a 6-6 tie. Coyote defense stops Lawton cold. Howard Morris displays his gracefulness against the Richland Ribels. AW? Coyotes 25 Rebels 13 Following the Lawton game the Coyotes had an open date before beginning district play. The Coyotes' first district foe was Richland Hills. The Rebels had a strong ground attack, but the tough Coyote defense rose to the occasion and managed to contain the Rebel offense. Meanwhile, Fullback Jimmy Powers was having a field day as he ran for three touchdowns behind the fine blocking of the Coyote forward wall, The Coyotes started district competition on the right foot by downing Richland Hills 25-13. :BROOM JERRY PHILLIPS WILLIE McKEE Senior Back Senior End Senior Guard All-District AII-District Honorable Mention ' lW- ' T55-111 W Honorable Mention SAM BASHARA WADE KING PHIL JOHNSON Sen or Guard Senior Center Junior Back Coyotes 28 Irving 22 School spirit rose to a fever pitch as the Coyotes sought revenge over arch- rival Irving 'for the 0-6 defeat suffered at their hands in 1962. The Coyotes iourneyed to Irving with but one thought in mind-annihilate the Tigers! The Pack was so keyed up that Irving was able to iump to an early 14-O lead via Coyote miscues. However, the inspired Coyotes were not to be denied this victory. Devastating blocking by the forward wall, hard running by the Coyote backs, and a sharp passing attack brought the Coyotes to a 14-14 tie at halftime. In the second half Wichita Falls continued to roll over the Tigers, scoring twice. One tally came on a beautiful pass and run play from Mike McBride to end Jerry Phillips. With the ex- ception ofthe opening period, the defense looked tremendous also. Lecl by Larry Cleveland, Mike Jenkins, Jim McGrath, and All-District guard Ted Stuart, the Coyotes held Irving to only one more touchdown that came on a long, beautifully executed pass. Irving left Tiger Stadium a thoroughly beaten team. Coyote Iinemen giving excellent punt coverage. Mike McBride scored the first time the Coyotes got their hands on the ball from 29 yards out. The second tally came as a result of great line play and fine running by McBride and Pai Alexander. With six seconds remaining in the first half, Mike McBr0om made a diving catch in the end zone, and the Coyotes had a commanding 21-0 halftime lead. However, the second half was a different story. The Coyotes rallied to move 72 yards in 'I2 plays, and Pat Alexander scored from two yards out. Because of a lack of game experience, these boys were unable to play to their capabilities at all times, but when they did. they were something to watch. Out of the thirteen wins, seven came with less than a minute to go, and three with less than twenty seconds remaining. Among the outstanding players were all-district .lack Pennington, David Oliver, a junior, who was voted all-district honorable mention, and John Cunningham, who was called on to do a man-sized iob and did it well. Surely the Coyotes' finest hour was their upset victory over Richland Hills, a team never before beaten by the Coyotes. Judging from their good record this year, we can expect great things from next year's Coy- ote team. X' an J. , k ,J . tix Q E J ,L A5-'M' I.
