FRENCH AND GERMAN French and German were offered this year for the first time at WF SH. Under the direction of Miss Kathleen Melat and Mrs. Sue Sax, stu- dents strive to acquire a speaking knowledge of the languages as well as an understanding of the contributions of the languages to the modern world. The goal of these new departments is to adapt the teaching of French and German to the needs of students in order that they may be able to lead more profitable lives in a world where the distance between countries is ever decreasing. LATIN In numerous ways a student profits from his study of Latin. He acquires a basis for the study of many other languages, which will be of value for him in the advancement of his education. Latin is of great assistance to the student as a supplement in his study of English. For those who plan to enter the field of medicine, science or law, Latin is indispensable. The social studies department of WFSH strives to give this knowledge to everyone. Such a founda- tion comes through world history, where he surveys the development of civilization to the present day. Adding to this knowledge, American and Texas history help the student to understand the democratic principles upon which this country was built. Civics completes the founda- tion by demonstrating how these principles are being ap- plied through the complex operations of government. Through excellent instruction and such aids as films, maps and charts, each one can acquire a genuine appreciation of his American heritage. ETHEL FARABEE, M.A. MRS. J. F. MORELAND, M.A. DONNELL L.
