The two essentials covered, reading and writing, are the means by which anyone makes an impression on others. Through the study of literature the student becomes acquainted with great authors and their observa- tions on life itself. The cultures of this age and of past ages are pre- sented in various ways through magazine articles, book reports and the basic textbooks. ln studying grammar, the student has an opportu- nity to make his English of immediate practical value by its daily use. Through note taking and research papers, all learn to organize material more effectively. The importance of English today makes it a pre- requisite to a happy and successful life in any field. J MRS. Whether it be as an astronomer, a businessman, a student in school or a housewife, mathematics is an inte g r al part of his existence. Courses to accommodate the mathematical needs of every individual are offered by the department in WFSH. All math courses broaden the reasoning powers of the individual. Study of higher branches of mathematics is available to the student wishing to enter technical fields, for example, Advanced Arith- metic provides an introduction to calculus and analytic geometry. The present generation, because of the higher standards required in all fields, must have a wider understanding of mathematics. WFSH is glad to know that its math department is attempting to provide a course of study equal to that of any other high school in Texas. LOIS BEI-I7 MZA- JOE K. REED, M.Ed. VIRGINIA A. World history gives the student an understanding of past civilizations, of more recent governments and of events in their relation to present-day conditions. In American history he acquires an interest in the history of his own country and its problems today. Texas history turns the student's attention even closer to home. Civics emphasizes to him his duties as a citizen. As the world grows smaller, the importance of social studies demands that the citizens of the United States have an understanding of world affairs. A STUDY HALLS Special tribute should be paid the study hall teachers of WFSH. Through their efforts the conscientious student has a quiet place in which he can finish his assignments or prepare for a test. The study hall di- rectors perform what may often seem a thankless task, but certainly it is a position important to students and to the administration of WFSH. I C . MRS. RUTH HARRIS, M.A. MRS. B. What? or Why? Through this interest the student gains knowledge that enables him to understand his surroundings. Biology presents a study of life, both plant and animal and enr courages him to understand the living world. Chemistry, in giving a qualitative and quantitative description of his surroundings, presents opportu- nity for scientific methods of thinking and experimenting. He receives further training in the use of scientific methods while attempting to verify basic laws of the universe in the physics lab. ln a modern atmosphere where even headlines emphasize scientific research, this department presents a program to challenge the student to seek further training. LIBRARY Snider Library of WFSH is invaluable to diligent students. Here all find a wealth of old and new mate- rial to supplement their textbooks. ln memory of the former principal of WFSH, the S. H. Rider Memorial Shelf has been established this year. Fifty-five magazines and many books are given each year as gifts by Mrs. C. W. Snider, whose interest in students never falters. N.D.C.C. Maior H. Through such courses as typing, bookkeeping and short- hand, students acquire the skills necessary for success in this field. Mechanical drawing and shop develop a basic interest and ability for careers in architecture, drafting or engineering. Economics and commercial law promote a sense of values in our changing society by offering information about the world of business and finance. While performing duties necessary to the school administration, office practice students experience on-the-job training. Because of the increasing need of industry and business for individuals with special- ized skills, this department emphasizes the fundamentals necessary to obtain good positions. S.E.D.T. Through the Safety Education Drivers' Training courses in WFSH, the student learns to drive in the proper manner. Through the use of a dual control car in which there are a clutch and brake, he puts the principles of sound driving learned in class into action. The dual controls insure safety for passengers in the car and for the beginner. The constant regard for safety instilled in the minds of the trained driver remains with the new driver when he is on the highways by himself. MACK L. KECK, M.S. HADDON F. MALONE, M.S. Latin, in providing a foundation for the Romance languages, paves the road for the student who wishes to continue his study of languages. Latin is an invaluable aid to the pros- pective lawyer or doctor and even to the individual who recognizes the Latin derivations in his read- ing. Therein lies the value of Latin as an asset in the future years. SPANISH This department of WFSH, under the direction of excellent instructors, has opened new doors of interest and learning to many students. Spanish not only provides the students with a better knowledge of the people and history of the Latin-America countries but also stimulates a desire to further the goodwill and understanding between the United States and its neighbors to the south. Imagine a world without music! Surely it would be a world devoid of feelings. Students in the orchestra, a cappella choir, and Coyote Band gain an appreciation of music that is invaluable for the rest of their lives. Its members serve in various musical organizations and play and sing for activities of importance to the community. The fine quality of the performances given by the music department can be attributed to the caliber of the instructors. The music department of WFSH is a vital factor in the lives of citizens of Wichita Falls. SPEECH The beginning speech student overcomes his fear of standing before a group soon after the course begins. After learning the fundamentals of public speaking, he may advance into debate. The debate student quickly learns to organize facts and present them in a convincing manner. He may go on into Amateur Guild or the National Thespian Society where finer points of the art of dramatics are learned. Radio-TV and Stagecraft are courses for the student interested in these specific fields. Each year the speech department participates in Texas interscholastic League competition. In past years its members have established a record that makes the school proud of its speech department. H. BEDFORD FURR, M.A. Southern Methodist University Sponsor of National Forensic League MRS. Many other cries are heard throughout the year as the girls and boys participate in volleyball, baseball and basketball. During the second semester all gym classes prepare for the gym show where a variety of exercises, sports and gymnastics are presented for the public. The importance of learning to participate in all sports in the right man- ner is stressed in all physical education classes. Volleyball always proves exciting. PERRY GOOLSBY, M.Ed. Under the guidance of Mr. Charles Avera and Miss Joyce Geer, the players of WFSH have made fine showings in invitational tournaments through- out Texas and Oklahoma. Besides playing other high schools, this year the Coyote Varsity has played some university teams. This past summer the Coyote Courts received a black dye on the surface that cuts down troublesome glare. The resurfacing is just one example of the constant improvements being made on the WFSH tennis program. HEALTH Mrs. R. E. Cole, the school nurse, has the responsibility of caring each day for those who become ill in school. It is she who determines if a student should be sent home. Students in WFSH taking P.E. attend health classes. Under the direction of Mrs. Brode M. Puckett and Mr. Joe Bob Tyler these students acquire the basis of good grooming. Such instruction gives each student information about rules of health that he will use for the rest of his life. MRS BRODE M- PUCKETT, B-S JOE BOB TYLER, Nl.ECl. MRS. R. E. These influences are seen each day in homes, advertisements, clothes and buildings. Beginning art classes learn techniques of printing, sketching, clay sculpture, painting, drawing and copper enameling. After acquiring a knowl- edge of the fundamentals of art, the student in VVFSH may enroll in advanced art courses where he begins oil painting and adver- tising work. This effort is often the beginning of interests that may provide enioyment to the student throughout the rest of his life. Editors, GERALD PHILLIPS and NELDA HEARD, led the group in maior decisions and gave their personal supervision to every page with helpful consideration. Color and layout for the book had the full at- tention of GAIL RANCIER, CYNTHIA HARVEY, and MARY ANN DUCKVVORTH. Their iob was difficult and exacting, but the girls emerged successful. JULIE INMAN, JUDY KAY GEORGE and NANCY TRACY were responsible for editing of the honors section. These girls shared many important secrets in preparing their pages. Art Staff Honors The activities section was arranged by GENE DOUGLAS, PATRICIA SISSEL, MARY ANN LESH, and BYRON DoNAHo. They had the cooperation of many teachers and students in compiling the pages that show students in action. '.-Ali.: ANNUAL STAFF Responsible for advising the group and helping make decisions was MISS MATTYE MAE HAYNIE, our sponsor. Tedious class sections were completed by CAROL ANN ANDERSON, LAMOINE HOBBS, NANCY SHAF- FER, DAVID FAIRRINGTON, and DAVID GOFF. These students were aided by the copy checkers, JULIE IN- MAN and RICHARD SCOTT, but everyone on the staff helped with the endless filing necessary for the task. DAWN DOBBINS, STEVE KIMZEY, and JIM EDD JONES combined their skills to prepare the pages of the administration division. Photographers, TOM REYNOLDS and JIM GREEN- WOOD, were responsible tor practically all the pictures in our book with the exception of some in the class, ad- ministration, honor, and sports divisions. The 1958 version of the Coyotes wrote a new and glorious page in the books by winning the Class AA state championship. This year's team was another powerhouse similar to those turned out in the past by Coaches Golding, Kirkpatrick, and Goolsby. They molded a raw, inexperienced group of boys into a state championship unit. However, this task would have been impossible without the determination and spirit of the boys. After an early season loss to Breckenridge, the Coyotes came storming back. Work on fundamentals prepared the team for Vernon and Fort Worth Poly. The red and black next journeyed to Odessa, winning a heavily contested decision. The following week the pride of south Texas, Corpus Christi Miller, came to the canyon to do battle with the Coyotes. Miller was defeated, and the Coyotes moved into district play with an impressive record. The Coyote's first district foe was a fairly strong Irving team, that threw many passes, keeping the Coyote defensive backs busy. The Coyotes' trip to Arlington came during the Arlington homecoming. A fired up Colt team gave some Coyote fans a scare before Arlington was defeated 24-O. The newest member of District 4A-I I, Birdville, was the next obstacle in the Coyotes' path to success. On a rainy, muddy field the Buffs were dispatched with ease. The Coyotes won the district crown the next week by defeating Grand Prairie 61-O. I78 -HL- FIRST ROW: Roger Richardson, Morriss Heskett, David Fowler, Ken Rundell, Wallace Hardy. SECOND ROW: Gerald Gant, Bennie Shields, Butch Hunt, Jim Walker, Dickie Turner, Tommy Gullahorn. C ASS 4A STATE CHAMPIONS On the Saturday after Thanksgiving, the Coyotes traveled to Borger for the bi-district game. An under- rated Borger team proved to be one of the toughest teams the Coyotes played all year. lt was a 12-6 decision in favor of the Coyotes. The next week the Coyotes again went on the road, this time to Abilene. ln 25 de- gree weather the Coyotes defeated the mighty Eagles by a score of 34-6. Semi-final play showed only four teams left in the running: Highland Park, Pasadena, Corpus Christi Miller, and the Coyotes of Wichita Falls. In semi-final play the Coyotes struck hard, defeating the Scots 22-T4 to earn a place in the state finals. The championship of Class AA football was played in Austin between the Eagles of Pasadena and the Wichita Falls Coyotes. This game was highlighted by flaring of tempers, however, the Coyotes held on to theirs and came out of the game both winners and state champions. The Coyotes of T958 are to be congratulated for their behavior both on and off the field as well as for their winning season. Of them their coaches have said, These are the greatest bunch of boys ever to pull on the red and black uni- forms of Coyotes. COACH HUNTER KIRKPATRICK COACH JOE GOLDING COACH PERRY GOOLSBY Assistant Coach Head Coach Assistant Coach These are the men whose skill and hard work have once again raised the Coyote banner above all others in Texas schoolboy football. The devotion of these men to the coaching profession is an asset to their characters and to our school. lt is impossible to express fully the appreciation of the school and the city for both the state cham- pionship andthe moral and physical training given the team. The time and effort of which our coaches have given so freely does not cease to pay dividends when the uniforms are put avvay at the end of the season. The ideals which their boys build during their associations with the coaches will be carried in the hearts of each one in whatever he may do or wherever he may go. Such is the case of the Coyote managers. These boys worked countless hours cleaning and readying equipment for the games. However, their chores were not complete when a game' began. ln each game there were 'cuts and bruises to be treated and broken equipment to replace and repair. The '58 Coyote managers worked hard and were definitely a factor in the Coyotes' championship season. No one realizes and appreciates this fact more than the team members themselves. Although the Coyotes were unable to compete at two meets because of rain, they won the district meet at Denton with an overwhelming total ot 55 5fi2 points. Because track competitions are still being held when the yearbook goes to press, sports editors can include only the track events of the spring of 1958. Track interest has grown the past season largely because of the modern cinder path directly behind the high school. 20I McCormick takes 220 at ClISlI'ICl ShoT-puT Broad lump High lump Pole vault Discus High hurdles TOO-yard dash 44O4yard dash Low hurdles 440-yard relay 880-yard run 220-yard dash Mile run Broad jump High hurdles Low hurdles 440-yard relay Mile run DISTRICT RESULTS Pat Harnilion ,,.... ........ 3 rd James Holder ..... ......,. l ST Howard Robey 2nd David Allred .,Ao.. ..,...., 3 rd Kirby Groves .,,. ..,.,... 3 rd A.
