The 1957 Coyotes displayed a powerful single wing attack resembling others that have been produced for several years by Coaches Joe Golding, Hunter Kirk- patrick and Perry Goolsby. For the second consecutive year the Coyotes bowed out of the state play-offs only to the eventual state champions. A rarity for the Coyotes occurred when the game scheduled with Odessa was called off because of a flu epi- demic involving both teams. There were many unusual features in the season for the ,57 Coyotes, among them the placing of ten men on the All-District rolls and the placing of two men on the All-State team. ln eleven games the Coyotes amassed 355 points outscoring their opponents almost three and one-half to one! ln district games six teams were either blanked or held to one touchdown. 54 v 1 i84 li ' ' -'90 ', ' My scoff- i 4A QUARTER-FINALISTS 5 W o . -C .18 3, 'j:,63,.f I Q S3 1 ,L AU, Q81 First row: James Holder, Morriss Heskett, Jim Land, Cary Schulz, Manager Ken Rundell. Ronald McDougle, Walter Maness, Frank Bracken. ln the elimaxing game that was to decide the District 4-A-7 championship, the Coyotes beat Grand Prairie 12-0 on a field that began as a blanket of snow and concluded as a quagmire of freezing mud. ln the game against lrving, the Coyote de- dense was met by a TCU Spread offense which heaved sixty-nine passes in forty- eight minutes of playing time. That was the only district game where the Coyote defense yielded more than one touchdown, but this fact was overshadowed by a sixty- eight point Coyote offensive splurge which left the game too, one-sided. It is impossible to mention all the things that could be said here, and there are too many Mbutisi' and '4if's in football to consider the potential a team might have pos- sessed. However, a team's greatness can be measured by the players on the team. It is the opinion of many that the future will prove this statement, The 1957 Coyote football team was not only a good football team but also a great football team. as -, an X, ' W ,A . .Q xv, , f , .w,f ! , . , 1, N l, ,ki if ,Z - f y , ,I V , fQ.. 3 ,,,, , l , J, ,:. ..v,,.-, 33 4, f -A 2' Q .M fs, , y , fm-.1 ., , t af 'rv-, R My f.v,,,s,. Their successful foes included Lindsay and Frederick. Oklahoma. and Paschal team of Fort Worth. Among their six defeated foes were such teams as Rochester, Grandfield and North Side of Fort Wiorth. ln several of their games the Rowdies were handicapped hy the loss of some of their outstanding players to the flu-ridden Coyotes. Early in the season its goal of the District 4A-7 championship seemed farfetched, especially after consecutive losses to Grand Prairie and Irving in the first round of district play. However, the Coyotes then came back hard with eight straight wins and closed the district by taking the championship from Grand Prairie in a thrilling 1-O game. Wlith their eyes on arch-rival Highland Park, the Pack took off on Lufkin in a best-of-three bi-district affair. A good Lufkin team bowed to the Coyotes in two consecutive games. The Pack then rolled to Highland Park, where they punctured the Scotties' bagpipes, 2-0. ln the second game of the series. the over-confident Coyotes took a shellacking, 11-0. The Coyotes then gained a berth in the state playfoffs with a win in the third game, 6-5. The trip to Austin netted the Coyotes a win over Pasedena, and it brought about the second meeting of Abi1ene's Eagles for the sports year. As in football, the Eagles proved too much for a great Coyote team and closed the season on the Pack with a resounding thud. But with a season record of 18 wins and 4- losses, there were no complaints back in Wichita Falls. Looking good, Lukiel is 'P INF!ELDERSW5!11nfling, left to right: Jimmy Jackson. Completing the seasonal round of track events, the team won District at Denton, journeyed next to Dallas for the first Regional track championship in the history of WFSH, and then enclosed the circle by sending ten athletes to Austin for the state meet. Most of the team gave credit for their success to the school's fine coach and new cinder path. Because track competitions are still being held when the yearbook goes to press, sports editors can include only.the track events of the spring of 1957.
