scholastic standing T l During this school year approximately eighteen hundred students of WFSH have learned the mechanics of the vari- ous subjects offered for theireducation. The use of fundamental skills which are presented by the Department of English provides the tools with which students prepare for college and business. Four years of English are required for graduation. ln addition to this important responsibility, this department sponsors The Coyote News and The Coyote, the latter in collaboration with the Art Department. The Department of Social Studies helps the student to acquire a better understanding of the social, economic and political aspects of the world and to develop a more intelli- gent approach to the future. This year a new course, advanced arithmetic, has been added by the Department of Mathematics. The higher mathematical courses are important to students entering the fields of technology. Two years of mathematics are required for a diploma from WFSH. The foreign languages, which comprise the Department of Language, are Spanish and Latin. The Spanish courses provide the student not only with a knowledge of the lan- guage and customs of the Latin-American peoples but also with a better understanding of their cultures. The study of Latin complements the work in English and prepares the students for further study needed in essential professions. A knowledge of Roman culture and mythology is acquired by taking Latin. These courses are often required for college entrance. Included in the Department of Science are biology, chem- istry and physics. These provide an excellent study of the material kingdoms of the earth. A knowledge of science is important for college preparation and for the practical use of the student. Painting and drawing, clay modeling, design and crafts are among the many skills taught in the Department of Art. Art students win many scholastic awards in regional and state contests in their individual fields. The harmony taught in the Department of Music increases the scholastic standing of WFSH. The choral groups-e, tions within each of these-bring special performances fof the student group, clubs and civic organizations. The tw bands, Coyote and Sophomore, present entertainment iii pep rallies, during half-time at football games and in annua' concerts. The newly-organized orchestra has performed a plays, the State Fair and City Teachers meeting. Various courses, other than debate, dramatics and platl form speaking, are offered in the Department of Speech The National Thespian Society's plays are prepared for the students and civic organizations. All this work prepare: young men and women for careers in public speaking andy gives them a basic understanding and knowledge of bette speech. Also included in this department is the course which adds spice to the dramatic productions and socia activities of the school, the stagecraft class. Among the most profitable of the elective courses is tht practical training of classes in the Commercial Department This department offers business courses, part-time training courses, shop and mechanical drawing work. Such effort provide a background for further study and often actua work. The part-time training prepares students througl classroom study and actual experience in their selectec occupations. Shop and mechanical drawing provide train ing for those interested in a hobby or a vocation afte graduation. , The homemaker of the future is trained in the Depart ment of Home Economics where each young woman gain skill in making clothing and in preparing foods. The Reserve Officers' Training Corps teaches young mel the value of discipline and teamwork as well as a knowledgl of military skills. Students attain driving ability in addition to knowledgi of rules and sound attitudes toward driving in Safety Educa tion Driver Training. A The programs of activities of the Department of Physicd Education for boys and girls are valuable in stressing th- importance of a sound body, teamwork and the enjoymen' obtained through physical exercises.
