'L-r GUUD NEIGHBURS Hemisphere solidarity depends on friendly cooperation of neighboring countries. The United States is indeed fortunate in that it enjoys this friendly cooperation with its neighbors in the western hemisphere. A nation is a good neighbor to other nations in the same proportions that the citizens are themselves good neighbors. Here again the United States is fortunate. From that person in the highest circle down to the student in our very own school this Warm, sincere spirit prevails. Our nation is fortunate also in that it has great leaders - men endowed with strength and wisdom and above all with a love for and an understanding of the prin- ciples of Justice and liberty which are the basis of all democracy. Like the nation we, too, have our leaders, students outstanding in ability and full of genuine concern and friendliness for their fellows. So, in this our Good Neighbor division, the staff presents to you-the Good Neigh- bors of WFSH. Moving bodies, tapping feet, tinkling bells, and ancient trumpets vividly portray the feelings and moods of these emotional people, ln 'our own dances can be seen the Latin influence-in the lively congas, the tangoes, and the rumbas. Not only do these Spanish-speaking compatriots of ours show their love oi beauty in all forms of music: they have from the early times of the Aztec and lnca Indians made use of 'vivid colors in art, in costumes, and in archi- tecture. Borrowed from these neighbors are our own spring colors and designs. The use of Peruvian pink, chili- pepper red, flag blue, and blacks and whites all show the influence of our neighbors. . But these are only concrete examples of the abstract ideals that we possess in common with our friends from south of the border. We also share with them the love of freedom-freedom to sing and dance-to create and enjoy beauty in all forms. Above all, we believe in the freedom to think. ' For over the horizon of the western hemisphere rises a feeling of unity so strong that it calls into existence a cry, all out for defense. Each country, state, city, and even our own school has answered this plea in true Amer- ican fashion. .- We will win! The junior room pictured here is WFSH's Honor Room. All out for Defense is their motto. Be- sides every student's participa- tion in buying stamps, this group boasts of a number of bond- holders. .t., ,.i....-.,.c. nm- A. Realizing that this nation is a neighbor to the greater portion of the Spanish- speaking world and that Spanish is the prevailing language of over 6,905,000 square miles of territory lying to the immediate south, the Spanish department of Wichita Falls Senior High School believes that the United States should foster the study of that language. As early as 1810, Simon Bolivar worked for a Spanish-American fed- eration until today more than ever in the history of America destiny calls for clos er association with other American neighbors. . Each student, as well as every other individual in this country, can help to build a more permanent friendship in this hemisphere by learning the language of American neighbors in Mexico, Central, and South America. As a result of understanding and appreciating their intellectual, tliterary, and artistic ideals, all can foster the defense of the free Americas.
