L as 4 Coyote The choice of fkmericanism as the theme for the 1941 COYOTE marked the enthusiastic beginning of a year's diligent and persistent work by editors, sponsors, and staff members to produce a yearbook which, it is believed, will not soon be forgotten. The untiring energy and patience of the Coyote sponsors deserve first recognition, for, doubtless, the 1941 Coyote would not be a reality had their experience and judgment not been exercised and their plans executed. Miss Ida Jane Collins acted as literary sponsor, Miss Lois McGaughy, art and layout supervisor, while Mr. Orren T. Freeman and Mr. Gambill Sullivan negotiated with the printers and worked out the Finances connected with the publication and sale of the yearbook One of the most responsible positions on the staff was that given to Zona Ruth Warman, organization editor. l-ler duties consisted Q of planning the class section and of check- ing and re-checking all material which was turned in. Organization Zona Ruth Warman feature and Clubs Barbara Keenan Because of the many organizations involved and the large groups of students and teachers to be inter- viewed, the work of the club and feature section is very important. Barbara Keenan Filled the position of clubs and feature editor well. Busmess Workmg Sta To break the monotony of the usual type of feature page, dif ferent themes were used as bases for these pages. Pic- tures carrying out various themes were used, thus originated the jubilee pages, stadium scenes, assembly, and others. Joe Sweeney and' Larry Moore, having assisted with col- lections last year, were promoted to the position of business managers. Assisted by Wyneth Berry, capable record keeper and her group of collectors in the cafeteria, these boys aided their advisers is handling the financial side of the yearbook. Staff Staff members are chosen because of their scholastic records, their executive ability, and their willingness to serve. By vote of the faculty and senior council, Tom Davis and Betty Sue Tennyson were chosen co-editors, Tom's taking over the general management and Betty Sue's Filling the position of literary editor. Besides the routine office work, which includes the running of many errands, the editors were responsible for the composition of the theme and the editorial write-ups in the book. Having been junior art assistants last year, Billie Leona l-larris and Maxine Fuson rightfully tool: over the very important taslc of making the boolc attractive with layouts and color worlc. Many hours of careful and tedious work by these editors were responsible for the unique division and opening pages, which enhance the beauty of the different sec- tions. The sports section was edited by Jimmy Simmons, who was assisted by Temple Driver and other staff mem- bers. Jimmy was well suited to his task because of his love for all phases of athletics and his loyalty to the COYOTES. Bereniece Bell was largely re- sponsible for the favorite sec- ion, which included for the first time this year pictures of a group of students elected to represent various traits of character necessary to worthwhile citizenship. Thus, the general theme of Patriot ism is portrayed throughout the section in a very at tractive manner. No yearbook could be a success without good photog- raphy, and the Coyote proves no exception to this rule. Photographers must be very agile as well as good- natured and ready at any time to malce pictures. Night trips to games, dances, and other school activities were a part of the schedule. Bob Lea furnished suggestions for the pictorial arrangements which portrays the school life in WFSH, while Eugene Yeakley, with his tireless energy, worked over hours to make the 1941 COYOTE a true portrayal of all school activities. 3 Sports Jimmy Simmons and Temple Driver. The courses include poster and art drawing in advertising, lettering, designing, figure drawing, modeling, painting, and block printing. General appreciation courses are offered in industrial designing, architecture, interior decorating, and painting. Besides attaining the championship in 1940, the Coyotes have held this distinction before- First in 1935 and again in 1937. Winning the district title for three years enables WFSH to keep the cup as a permanent possession. The donor ofthe cup, Mr. Linton Estes, presents the district trophy to Coach Ted Jelleries during the annual football banquet. Although he is not so small, little toughey was the nick- name given to tackle Felton Whitlow, presumably, after his famed brother, Kenneth toughey Whitlow. Felton was noted by his heads-up play and jarring tackles. A Coyote who made the all district 2-AA second team, Felton should make a good college player, ROBERT MAYES Robert, a fast, aggressive tackle, showed himself to good advan- tage throughout the year. The team has lost a good lineman. LEON FOSTER A member of the Foster family of past Coyote fame, tackle Droop Foster proved up to ex- pectations in his first year on the Coyotes in every respect. While looking back over the many happy days spent in compiling this annual, we are reminded of those people who have so ably assisted us in presenting the book, and we take this space to extend our deepest gratitude to them. y To Mr A K Presson and the office force for the valuable time they have given in checking names and classifying students, we are greatly indebted. We owe our appreciation to Clyde Bartlett, who made most of the photographs for the class section and the football games, to G. Soderlund and Ted Roberts, who made pictures for the favorite section. Also, we are grateful to the Times publishing Company for the use of their football pictures which aided us to complete the sports section We acknowledge our thanks to The Steck Company, publishers and printers of the book' and to Mr. Winkler Steck representative for his interest and help. The English teachers, who were so considerate in helping us with our choice of Coyote representatives from the various classes and the loyal support of the Coyote News in helping us put over our picture drive and subscription campaign deserve our greatest expression of gratitude. ln conclusion, the editors express their sincere hope that this 1941 Coyote will serve as a pleasant reminder of those days of happiness and study spent in the class rooms and on the campus of WFSH.
