DNY BEGINNING Joi-in ED wu.1.mms . . . Hnd all was still. The wind had ceased its moan Between the nalzed, starh-limbed, ghostly trees- False dawn had fled-and then the darh was hing. The night-bird ceased his pulsing, throaty song with vague half-fear at having heard himself Fllone-his melancholy song was stilled, Find all about, as though some unlznown sign were shown, a single, simple world was stopped. The ever-shifting sands of time were held Fl sweeter, breathless, hopeless moment then. The darlzness, closing over all, grew deep- H blanlaet thrown across the earth and pierced H million times by tiny unseen pins. Hnd that, a moment of eternity, UJas gone, was fled on tiny, darlaened Feet. Fl fleeting, instant second, hardly lznown, never to be forgotten, to remain Through endless years of ugly, sordid things, For at that moment inlay darlzness fell Upon the earth. Find suddenly the sun l.Uith slender fingers grasped the edge ol earth Rnd lilze an athlete leapt into the slzy. This poem won state-wide recognition for John Ed and brought another loving-cup to the lUichita Falls Senior High School's display cabinet.
