ADMINISTRATION EVALUATION BRINGS CHANGE During the year, the school board, faculty, a team from the North Central Association of Schools, local patrons, and students from WCHS conducted a self-help program of evaluation for the Wichita County High School. This program is de- signed to aid the school in improving present curriculum, facility use, and other facets of school life. In addition, the administration Worked for the passage of two un- successful bond issues W. W. TEMPLER, Superintendent of District 154467. Mrs. jean French Mrs. jackie Townsend Secretary Board Bookkeeper 6 .D Principal LEO ECK supervises the activities of students and teachers at WCHS. Principal Creates School Image For some years We have heard the revolutionary slogan in public and secondary schools-- 'We don't teach subjects, We teach pupils'. This idea is safe only so long as the y pupil is not nourished on the idea that he is the center of all things and that subject matter is rather incidental after all. The dignity and majesty of the great fields of commanding truth take precedence over the particular wishes, notions W'- ff and vagaries of individual students. We appreciate the students at our school and realize the fact that they are infinitely more significant than the subject matter scheduled for Mrs. Pat Iosephson is the office secretary. 7 teaching. Having a good back- ground in the Language Arts is a basic step across this bridge, for through English, it is easy to ac- quire a knowledge of effective communication practices. WCHS offers many courses in the field of Written and oral comunica- tion. The English courses, includ- ing College Prep. , provide the funda- mental rules in Written communica- tion. Speech teaches the discipline of speaking before a group. Spanish classes at WCI-IS offer students the opportunity to learn a second language. Oh, Mrs. Templer, speech is so wonderful! I had 'better start studying or Mr. Homan will be after me! In practical English, some are trying to study While others are---! I2 Mr. Homan, you caught me in the act! my ,,.. ,. ' A ' l -If I' 'S Mi: f n Dale is really trying for that 13 SOCIAL SCIENCE Social Science Seeks Aware- ness Of Individual Roles Social is defined as the inter- action of the individual and the group on the welfare of human beings as members of society. Science is de- fined as knowledge attained through study or practice. Social science at WCHS is di- rected into broad areas to help the student understand his role in his society. The student may study ec- onomics to become wiser in the use of his money. He may study soci- ology to better understand the Why of his behavior in his society. He may study world history, American history, and Constitution so that he may become more aware of the heritage upon which his nation is built. He may through the study of the social sciences become more aware of his responsibility to his society as regulated by the laws established by forefathers and by his own contemporaries. E fg it .eggs , jr Mr. Wooden lcnows how to keep his students busy. COMMERCE Commerce Aids Everyone Commerce can be used in all fields of life. Students may prepare for such fields in high school by taking courses in typing, bookkeep- ing, shorthand, or general business. The lubricant of business is a competent office force. The com- merce department specializes in courses designed to aid the budding business secretary or accountant. Even the farmer or housewife may utilize these courses in making better budgets for the year or in necessary correspondence. The student planning for college will find these courses valuable as he takes lecture notes in shorthand, or as he types a formal report. Students become competent through timed Writings, Workbook practices, or conditioned practices. QM. Mr. Fisher is helping a student who is in trouble W if A i g pfi gpiii T A . T f is L ',ai' H ifi 3 i t ttt t Q, Be sure to count all typing errors! These students must be working toward a typing pin FINE ARTS Students in Fine Arts Show Signs of Satisfaction The students at WCHS have the opportunities to paint, to sing, or to play an instrument in the fine arts department. This program enables the student to enjoy his leisure time, While at the same time, he can earn credits. Mrs. Davis focuses the hand, the eye, and the mind in a pattern so that the student can locate his artis- tic talent in oil painting, tempra painting, or poster designing. Under the vocal department, the student may develop an interest in music Whether it be solo Work or be a part of a large choral group. I-le may even be selected to sing with the Chorves, a vocal group known for their excellence. Mr. Gale is the director for these groups. Mr. Wilken will help the student choose from any number of musical instruments. During his high school years, the student may join the con- cert hand, the marching band, or one of the smaller instrumental groups. These dance band students are really making muslc Do you think Mrs. Davis will see this mistake ?' HGME ECCNOMICS Prepared Homemakers Reflect Signs Of Successful Wives And Mothers I just broke a needle may be heard in the Home economics de- partment as a girl is finishing her dress or coat. In home economics, a girl can learn how to follow a recipe by for- getting to put in a cup of flour When it is two cups. Home economics teaches a girl the art of dressmaking, cookery, homemaking, and care of the family The Annual Spring Tea, spon- sored by the Mother's Lunch Com- mittee, is held every year. At this time the home economics girls model the clothes they have made in the school year. Over 150 dif- ferent projects Were modeled this year. i I did not think I had any talent! I am ready to go. Will these girls ever get their dresses done on time 7 1' Y' Are these boys building their dream house? :win MANUAL ARTS Students See Signs In Manual Arts For Careers In Life Manual arts is a part of the gen eral education which is offered at Wichita County High School. This department realizes that not only the challenge must be offered, but teaching conditions, including the classroom and shop atmosphere, must be congenial so the student can accept the responsibility. Woodworking is intended to reflect the growing, expanding in- terest in wood and woodworking skills. Mechanical drawing teaches a universal language by means of which the form, size, and finish of an object can be described. Woodworking and mechanical draw- ing are both under the direction of Mr. Leuszler. Vocational agricul- ture, under the direction of Mr. Hamilton, gives the boys an opportunity, after appropriate advanced education, to return back to the farm. Mr. Hamilton is helping a moubled student. I do not think you are measuring that right, 17 Dallas? MATHEMATICS Mathematics Opens The Way To Gther Fields Today, in the complex World of business and industry, employers demand Workers versed in the skills and technical know-how that are so important to continued progress. Mathematics is a learned skill essential to a knowledge of mea- surement and relationships, and to the development of the reasoning process. A staff of skilled instructors-- Mr. Dutton, Mr. Holmes, and Mr. Townsend--help students to probe the vast World of mathematics in preparation for other subject fields. The varied courses offered--gen- eral math, algebra, geometry, and senior math--are programmed to aid all levels of mental aptitudes. The prospective housewife might seek only general math. The en- gineering student Would include all of the higher math. Math, thus becomes the key to the student's future role in society. I CANNOT understand that problem! NoW to explain it in an easier way! These freshmen cannot figure out who discovered algebra. 18 SCIENCE Signposts To The Future, That's Science Science is a sign--a sign of the times. It leads students to the dis- covery of better Ways of living through the study of biology, chem- istry, physical science, and phy- sics. These students may Well be the scientists of tomorrow. Biology, taught by Mr. Hulett, probes the function of living organ- isms in the plant and animal Worlds. The microscope opens new vistas to the Neophyte. Chemistry classes, taught by Mr. Hulett and Mr. Holmes, are aimed at developing the under- standing that all things can be broken down into their elemental parts. Physical science and physics ex- pose the students to the laws and principles of the universe, so that they may read the sign posts to a better life. I tudents, do you understand the problem, now? , WW- W .,- 'Wx Chemistry means a lot of thinking. I could not have missed that many! 19 PHYS ED AND ' it DRIVER'S EDUCATION Mental And Physical Health Create The Working Citizen Mental and physical health is important to the Well-being of every American citizen and to the progress and strength of his nation. Wichita county High School has a four-year physical education pro- gram aimed at making the student physically fit and mentally alert. The program is coordinated around student needs by three physical ed- ucation teachers--Mr. Dutton, Mr. Easterday, and Mrs. Nicholas. An alert mind and conditioned reflexes are a requirement of the safe driver. Mr. Williams seeks, through the driver's education pro- gram, to create the alert driver Who is conditioned to recognize his responsibilities to his fellow man When he is behind the Wheel How much longer, Mr. Homan ?' Charles Mills and Pam Berning were chosen by Governor Robert Docking to reign as the 1968 WARRIOR King and Queen. The Governor chooses the King and Queen solely on personal appearance. WARRIOR Signs Became 1968 By-Word Members of the year- book staff chose Signs of the Times as the theme of the 1968 WARRIOR. Under the direction of co-editors, Sharilyn Bern- ing and Melinda Palkowitsh the WARRIOR staff sold pages-and-pages of ad- vertising, harassed-and- Worried students into buy- ing 1968 WARRIORS, and took picture-after-picture to fill the yearbook from cover-to-cover. The second annual yearbook party opened yearbook season. Days- and days of Work at the end of the year closed the season. Lloyd Hutchison served as faithful photographer this year. Maryann Medina, Greg Brakey, and Carol Wadley put together paper and prepare mailouts. CHIEFTAIN CHIEFTAIN Changes Format To bring the news to the students while it is still fresh, the CHIEF- TAIN staff changed the format of the paper. They printed a two to four page paper weekly. lts new mast- head carried the name CHIEETAIN BULLETIN. Out of necessity some 1 of the interpretive writing and features had to be left out. Another new venture of the CHIEFTAIN staff was in the realm of television. Each week Vanine Arnold acted as narrator for a Vanine checks facts by phone- taped television broadcast about some aspect of school life. The taped reports accompanied by pictures were presented on the Early Bird Report on Channel l3 television. As in the past. students covered assigned beats. They covered all l school activities and wrote stories about them. 1 58 f STUCO, BACK ROW: Deland Barr, Major Whalen, Brad Blackburn, Torn Cable, Charles Mills, Bruce Jay, Judy Grusing.
