BOYS:D. Pfannenstiel, S. Siemens, B. Kreutzer. GIRLS:j'. Winchester, L. Cable, S. Berning, I. Hamilton, I. Berning. TOP WINNERS: LaVon Grusing, Sharily-n Berning, and Dale Naiman. LITERATURE Mc1n's Words Fill The Void Of Time Words, words, words - a ceaseless flow from the hearts and minds of men give expression to their innermost desires, their seeking for self expression, and their hope for recognition. Some use the longer prose of the novel to uncover the bad in the world---others its media to show beauty and love. Poetry's fleeting form, now a ballad, a sonnet, or blank verse, becomes the vehicle for man's deepest emotion. Drama, the short story, the essay and all other forms of literature strive to fill the void of faceless recogni- tion of ages past. Man wants his words to fill the emptyness of time. The students of Wichita County Community High School have added to the words of the masters in some small measure. I.aVon Gruising was chosen to receive the second place award in the KANSAS AUTHORS SHORT STORY competition. Dale Naiman's poem was published in the NATIONAL POETRY AND ANTHOLOGY Sharilyn Berning received the merit award from KANSAS AUTHORS for her poem entitled Nightfull. 56

'65 Indian Bond Enjoys Many Rewo rds The 1965 Indian Band is a thing of the past now, but is not to be forgotten. The sen- ior band members will never forget the rainy days of marching sea- son--the stringy hair and soggy sneakers, nor will they forget the boring days of concert season--the District Music Festival looms ahead and the clarinets still can't get meas- ures 34-38. Remember the day one of the trombone players fell off the risers, or the day one of the drummers dropped the cymbals on his toe? Not only the seniors, but every band member will long remember the good times that accompanied the hard work this year in band. The days weren't all rainy and boring. For example, the day we received a II-plus at the District Festival--we had worked hard in order to earn a I, but when we re- ceived a II-plus, we were happy just the same and we knew that we had done our best, and that maybe the judge was just a little too hard on us. Take the days spent in Colorado attending the Boulder Band Day where we received I's for our fine perform- anceg or the Garden City Band Day, where we were one of the few bands that received a I for our march routine---these were just a few of the rewarding days in band. The band has worked hard this year to receive the rewards and due praise, and under the very fine direction of Mr. Alvin Wilken, it will continue to grow in size and in quality. BAND COUNCIL LEFT TO RIGHT: Bill Kreutzer, Vice- Pres. 3 jackie Moody, Sec. 5 Judy Schreck, Pres. g Janelle Clark, Librariang Mr. Wilken, Dir. :mmmmumw
