Some have drunk deeply at the fountain of knowledge. A few have attained their goal. Football, basketball, band, and music have helped to fill the void for others. What will you seek Within? His choices this year were Cheryl Doyle and Dan Gardner. The Governor selects the king and queen by photograph and judges only on personal appearance. The honor of yearbook king and queen is bestowed only on seniors, and those who have been basketball, football, or other royalty are ineligible . There is no personal award or bene- fit derived from this honor, save the privilege of reigning over the WARRIOR for a year. Queen Cheryl will further her educa- tion at Fort Hays State next year in hopes of becoming a future nurse, While King Dan tentatively plans either to attend the Kansas Vo-Tech School at Goodland or join the Navy. uf 'L ,,gi'Mw:1sr1g! Without our efficient office force or board of education our high school days would become complete chaos. On the other hand without an understanding and inspiring faculty to listen to his many gripes and grievances, the student would be entirely lost and alone. Without anyone of these administrators, whether it be secretary, principal, a member of the board, or teacher, the mechanics of running the high school would be seriously impaired. 5 W. W. On a special day in the fall of the year the seniors offici- ally welcome the freshmen to their four long years of high school. However, it is usually done senior style, and this year was no exception. All freshmen were asked to wear Such attire as babies' diapers, gunny sacks, old T-shirts, nylon hose, thongs, and high heels. They were also asked to bring a baby bottle. The day's fun began at 8:00 a. m. when each senior was assigned a freshman who was to lead his master fa senior, down main street to school. The freshmen acted as valets to the seniors the rest of the day. An assembly Qof which there are pictures on this pagej was held in the afternoon after which the freshmen were served cokes by the seniors in the cafeteria. Freshman boys shave their legs with catsup at assembly. B. Kreutzer and 1. Leak take the rats out of M. Zellner and D. LGOKING AT ACTIVITIES The main purpose for furthering one's education in high school is to learn. However, many would be lost without also having a little fun. There's nothing like a good old dance, play, or con- cert to relax you after a hard day of studying. Here at W. C. C. H. S. there is plenty of studying, plenty of dances, plays, and concerts. Many of the activities are sponsored by the organi- zations, while still others are sponsored by various class departments. The following pages will tell briefly what the stu- dents at W. C. C. H. S. have done for relaxation and fun this year, ranging from the FFA Banquet to the Boulder Band Day. 41 TOP ROW: G. Roberts, D. Naiman, V. Case, C. Doyle, R. jay, B. Nagel, SECOND ROW: B..jay, B. Student Council again successfully guided the students through another school year. The group usually met three or four times a month in the prin- cipal's office to discuss impending matters of importance. The Pres- John Lev meetings were presided over by Pres. john Ley, who proved himself very capable of handling the job. The Student Council sponsored many activities this year ranging from a Boys' and Girls' State assembly to the annual Pan Cake Supper. The organization also supervised cheerleader and class elections. Any profits received by the Student Councilare divided equally among all the classes and organizations. I. Ley shakes incoming Pres. , R. The cheerleaders have set the pace of school spirit throughout a successful football and basket- ball season. They helped provide the impetus necessary to attain a berth at the State Basketball Tournament at Emporia. The cheerleaders were enthusiastically sup- ported by the well organized Pep Club attired in the black and red of the Warriors of W. C. C.. I-I. S. The W-Club provided the nucleus of poise and leadership for the teams so ably representing Leoti, on the field of contest. LITERATURE Mc1n's Words Fill The Void Of Time Words, words, words - a ceaseless flow from the hearts and minds of men give expression to their innermost desires, their seeking for self expression, and their hope for recognition. Some use the longer prose of the novel to uncover the bad in the world---others its media to show beauty and love. Poetry's fleeting form, now a ballad, a sonnet, or blank verse, becomes the vehicle for man's deepest emotion. Drama, the short story, the essay and all other forms of literature strive to fill the void of faceless recogni- tion of ages past. Man wants his words to fill the emptyness of time. The students of Wichita County Community High School have added to the words of the masters in some small measure. I.aVon Gruising was chosen to receive the second place award in the KANSAS AUTHORS SHORT STORY competition. Dale Naiman's poem was published in the NATIONAL POETRY AND ANTHOLOGY Sharilyn Berning received the merit award from KANSAS AUTHORS for her poem entitled Nightfull. 56 FIRST PLACE WINNERS: Sharilyn Berning E. The sen- ior band members will never forget the rainy days of marching sea- son--the stringy hair and soggy sneakers, nor will they forget the boring days of concert season--the District Music Festival looms ahead and the clarinets still can't get meas- ures 34-38. Remember the day one of the trombone players fell off the risers, or the day one of the drummers dropped the cymbals on his toe? Not only the seniors, but every band member will long remember the good times that accompanied the hard work this year in band. The days weren't all rainy and boring. For example, the day we received a II-plus at the District Festival--we had worked hard in order to earn a I, but when we re- ceived a II-plus, we were happy just the same and we knew that we had done our best, and that maybe the judge was just a little too hard on us. Take the days spent in Colorado attending the Boulder Band Day where we received I's for our fine perform- anceg or the Garden City Band Day, where we were one of the few bands that received a I for our march routine---these were just a few of the rewarding days in band. The band has worked hard this year to receive the rewards and due praise, and under the very fine direction of Mr. Alvin Wilken, it will continue to grow in size and in quality. The mixed chorus, along with the glee clubs read music and performed two concerts during theyear. This was the second year that the choir had the honor of singing under the direction of Mr. Gale. He has formed many new groups along with the new air he has given to the vocal music department. Surely, all seniors will never forget the good times they had this The robed choir received a I and from this group came the solos and ensembles representing the best of many voices. These sights, sounds and actions of Indian athletes are readily recalled as we pass through the entrance to Vague Field or as we enter the door of the gym. For those . who love sport for sport's sake, it offers competition. It provides a way to burn off extra energy left after a day of study. For students, teachers and patrons, it provides exciting entertainment and the opportunity to exhibit qualities of good sportsmanship. 67 Head coach Don Leuszler Assistant coaches Jerry I-lart and LeRoy Team managers Ken Applegate, Dutton Charles Gonzales and Mike Lee. 0 WARRIORS LEAGUE RUNNER-UP AFTER SLOW START Coach Leuszler's charges opened the 1964 season slowly, losing to O tough Ulysses and Scott City'during the early stages of the season.
