Sponsored by HOMER 81 ANN COR '-, A two-story building located near the present grade school was the home of both the grade and high school. High school classes were held in a two roomed belfry, the regular four year course being established in 1906. In 1917 the high school was moved to the court house and classes were held there and in the present theater building until September 1926 when they moved into the present building. That year the school became WCCHS and a regular school board was elected. A bond issue of S325, O00 for the building program was approved on March 23, 1954. Rhodes Construction Company began work in September, following plans of Joseph W. Radotinsky, architect. The building was accepted by the Board of Trustees on October 27, 1956. New construction includes the Vocational Agriculture Shop, classrooms, tool rooms, locker room and laboratory rooms. The music department has a combination room that accomodates both the band and the mixed chorus. The old auditorium was remodeled by adding a floor and partitions. This provides a new industrial arts department and cafeteria on the first floor and a library, science room, locker room, and boy's and girl's rest rooms on the second floor. The homemaking and crafts rooms were enlarged. A modern inter-communication system and a master clock that synchro- nizes the time in clocks throughout the building are new features that aid materially in the efficiency of the school. The asphalt tile floors and acous- tical tile ceilings reduce noise to a minimum. Color, as seen on walls of the various rooms and departments give a distinctive note to the building. A complete new flourescent lighting system reduces student eye strain. Zwfijg , Y , viizf, T -N A First Building 1906 Vis.. Alternating every . . . f . six weeks one class worked on the annual while the other edited news for the Chie tain and Standard. English Echoes, which features outstanding creative writing of students, was published the latter part of school. Positions alternated for the Chieftain. On the 1956 Warrior Staff Donna Wewer and Larry Bender shared editors job generously given them by the previous annual staff. Clever drawings were the result of Douglas Brown's artistic hand. Shooting people was Clare Jane Mitchell and Eileen Atkinson's favorite occupation, with a camera of course. Lillie Cferstberger and Marcele Kreutzer carefully kept records on finances. The school calendar proved to be more work than play for Kathy Biel and Jeanene Linder. Keeping Gl ville faces and names together with the job for Art Kalbach, Lloyd Crouch, Harold an , Noreen Smades and Larry Minor. Typewriter bells rang as Phyllis Humble, Carol Seibel, Lynette Walk and Jeanette Fletcher finished copies. Neither sun nor storm could keep Sara Herndon, Marlyn Marcy, Joyce Pearson, d H don Snider from selling ads Larry Minor, Fred Rady Fricke, and Monte an ern . Seibel tactfully wrote sports news. History is really Clare Jane's talent and she worked hard making contacts with citizens in the know, about education in the past and identification of pictures. i 1 8 t At the Senior Play December 17 the financial intake was 3325. 00 Lillie helps Monte E lllll PLAY I It IN NEW AUIIITIIIRIUM Laurie Huntington Sidney Huntington Ma rtha Huntin ton 8 Wally Huntington , Gus Gustavesky. Immediately card boxes and lunch sacks were opened. When Lamar was reached at 10:10, and a 15 minute stop was announced, a cafe was raided for soft drinks and reading material. Forty-five minutes was spent shopping in Pueblo while Harlan Phifer, faithful, cheerful and fun loving bus driver, unsuccessfully had the air conditioning system worked on. The Broadmoor zoo was invaded at 2:00, then the swimming pool, where Bill Betlach was the center of attraction, and finally the ice palace. After two hours of fun, the bus was again boarded and at 6:30 all were in rooms at the Shangri -La Motel in Denver. All hurried to freshen up for the evening meal at the Sky-Chef in the Stapleton Airport, where Fred Rody Fricke joined the group for the evening. High lights included the Light Spots and senior madrigalians furnishing entertainment for the guests. The dessert was sparkling cakes with Welcome Leoti Hi written on top. We learned later that they were baked by Mr. Rupp, a former Leotian. Students wanting to go to shows were too late so some bowled while the majority lounged in their rooms and wrote letters. A hearty breakfast was eaten at the Shirley-Savoy Hotel 'Dhursday morning, after which all toured the fascinating Museum of Natural History, Later the KOA Radio and TV studios were visited, with Jim Shafer appearing in Bermuda shorts for an ad of fishing reels. After dinner at the Shirley-Savoy again, an hour was spent shopping. The trip to Idlewild Lodge started at 1:30 with a stop on Berthoud Pass, 11, 400 feet up, Arriving at the lodge around 5:30, a buffet style supper at 6:00 was followed by an evening of Playing cards and watching movies of the Olympics, etc. Each morning there were breakfast calls, at 8:00 or 8:30. Friday's tour began about 9:30, The first stop was at the 6. 02 mile long Moffet Train Tunnel. From there they went back to Berthoud and rode the cold but thrilling ski lift. At noon a weiner roast was enjoyed at a roadside park. There Jim Shafer and Don St. John experienced a fall in a babbling brook and Marlyn Marcy caught a trout. At three o'clock a stop was made at Central City where everyone flocked to see the Face on the Bar Room Floor, and made unsuccessful attempts to get into the Opera House and other noted places of interest. A little shopping was done and on the ride home Cherry Cider proved refreshing. Before going back to Idlewild Lodge a swimming and shopping stop was made at Idaho Springs, where Bermuda shorts was the chief item sought. After supper at the lodge, the evening was spent singing, dancing, and playing cards. Saturday morning a few slept late, while others did mountain climbing and sightseeing. The bus left at 10:30 for Grand Lake, again stopping at a road-side park for a weiner roast. Speed boat rides were enjoyed around scenic Grand Lake, seeing the Hallmark Home, plus Dale Perry and Chuck Merriweather at the Western Brands Motel. Next a tour through the Granby Pumping Plant was most interesting and educational. Passing through Fraser, the cabin where President Eisenhower had his heart attack was looked upon with interest. After a hurried evening at the lodge, and the presentation of a gift of appreciation to Harlan, an evening of bowling and shows at Granby followed, Before going to bed a midnight snack was devoured by the persistently starving group. The tired bunch left Idlewild Lodge at 7:30 Sunday morning starting home. Stops were made at Idaho Springs for church and at the Denver Union Station for dinner. From there on the weary bunch slept a great deal. Only one stop was made, at Kit Carson, and the group pulled into Leoti at 6:15. All agreed it was a grand trip but felt the home town looked mighty good. Mixed Chorus performs at Baccalureate. Let's go back to September 1952 when our class entered WCCHS. We elected as sponsors Marjorie Gugler and Mrs. Leona Dickenson. Class officers were Marlyn Marcy, presidentg Wayne Fitzgerald, v. president, and Jerry Elmore, secretary- treasurer. We lost Jerry Elmore, Wayne Fitzgerald, Audrey Sowers, Robert Curry and Leeland Conrady before the year was finished, so re-elected Carol Seibel and Sara Herndon to fill the vacancies. At the beginning of the sophomore year we gained Judy Snider. Officers were Judy Snider, presidentg Sara Herndon, v. president, Carol Seibel, secretary-treas- urer. Chet Hayden and James Dickenson were elected sponsors. At the end of that year we lost Melvin Sappenfield, Alice Strong, Stella Rogers, Judy Snider, and Marilyn Kessler. As juniors we elected Larry Bender, presidentg Dorothy Dierks, v. presidentg Carol Seibel, secretary, and Clare Jane Mitchell, treasurer. Sponsors were Francis Oldham and Warren Townsend. During the junior year we lost Bill Schwindt Glen Calhoun, and Marjorie Baker. The junior play was Shy Guy. This was the year the madrigal became so famous, and several juniors were members of the or- ganization. Mardi Gras was the theme for the banquet. A thrill came our senior year, moving into the new building. Though it brought many adjustments there were few difficulties. We elected Monte Seibel, presidentg Marlyn Marcy, v. president, Jeanette Fletcher, secretary, and Dolores Wilken, treasurer. Hope Brauer, James Dickenson and Warren Townsend were our loyal sponsors. We lost Dorothy Robbins and Hank Kirobbe during the year and Fred Rody and Don Berning joined the armed forces. However, Fred made it back for our commencement. The senior play The Little Dog Laughed was the first play to be given in the new gym. The trip to Colorado Springs, Denver and on up to Idlewild Lodge with parent sponsors, Rosalie St. John, Lola Shafer, Curlie Humble, and Luther Seibel was a happy finale of 4 years of education.
