FIELD HOCKEY The Collegiate Hockers experienced a transformation this seasong they won several of their games and scored in almost every game. The credit for this improvement in skill and per- formance belongs mainly to the new coach, Mrs. Jenny Phil- lips, the team's playing reflected the patience and perseverence which she had shown during practices. The most morale-rousing game, against a surprised South- east, left the Hockers ecstatic with a final score of 6-Og this score set a school record and finally convinced spectators that hockey at Collegiate is not a joke. The team hosted Barstow in October and lost, but because of the Hockers' fine defense their capable opponents were unable to score more than two points, to beat Collegiate by one. The remaining games proved more difficult to win than had the first contest against South- east, when the Hockers again challenged Southeast it lost by a score of 1-0. The last seasonal game against South also proved disappointing, as the Hockers were defeated. Qui' Hocker fans knew that this year would be successful as the team displayed new skills and ability in a preseason game against Wichita State University. In a very close game the 25? Hockers played quite well and, although the team lost by three points, the spectators and the coach were generally pleased with their playing. f y if Statistically, the season was one of both success and failure, j, y W A V M V g y however, the girls feel that the lessons they learned and the The Hockers anxiously await the official's starting skills they acquired more than compensate for the defeats. VARSITY FOOTBALL In its eighth season of varsity football, Colle- giate played nine games ending with a 3-6 rec- ord. Under the new head coach, Bill Carter, and i his assistant, Coach Duke, the Collegiate team proved skillful and determined, although ham- pered with injuries of key players. The Spartans proved their strength by winning over Hardtner 34-6, and Thayer 42-14 in their first two games. ., t 1 A tt 'L -we .W 1 ff:-1 .--L Collegiate was not up for Galva, and was de- ggsg ,ggi ,F 2 cf .. In the next two games, the Spartans played below par, first losing soundly to Nor- wich 68-24, and then losing a close game to LeRoy 20-16. The next week Collegiate bounced back and fought a fierce battle against Galva, losing a close game 20-14. The game with Bra- man proved disappointingg the Spartans did not play with their usual spirit, and as a result, were beaten 42-12. The Spartans put everything to- gether for their final game with LeRoy. The of- fense and defense performed equally well, and together they produced a 54-30 victory. lt was a great way to wrap up the season. Next year Collegiate has hopes for an even better season, and is looking forward to playing some ll man football next season.
