Her fairness in decisions both in and out of class and her method of presenting material to her students and her capacity to stimulate students ' interest in her classes are only a few of the many outstanding qualities which make her the great person she is. Her quiet, engaging personality, her patience; her understanding of others — these have won for her the lasting friendship of all those who have come in contact with her. She is the type of teacher we all like to refer to as my favorite teacher. A distinguished alumna of Whittier High School and the University of Southern California, a sponsor of various student activities, and an active participant in the community describe some of her many activities. With great pleasure, we, the students of Whittier High School, take great pride in dedicating the ' 55 Cardinal Annual to MISS FRANCES KING. Mr. C. H. Wennerberg, Superintendent and Secretary to the Board of Trustees The past year has been one of great change and accomplishment in the Whit- tier Union High School District. Many important decisions were made and the fourth high school started, construction to be completed by September of 1955. High praise and recognition has come to the district from all over the country, and many of the practices in each of the schools and the district administration have been studied and used by other districts. Highest of all have been the splendid achievements of the graduates of El Rancho and Whittier as verified by many scholarships and awards given to them. On behalf of the Board of Trustees of the District, and the entire administrative staff, I congratulate all of the 1955 graduates. We believe that you, too, will continue to distinguish yourselves in school and community. C. H. Suggestions from the community get to the school through the Board, and it is their responsibility to work out efficient plans which the school Administrators can carry out. Planning the yearly program, Back-to-School-Night, and putting on the Christmas program, are only a few of the important functions of the P.T.A. Board. You seniors are Whittier High ' s largest graduating class. Some of you already see the job ahead, others have charted the course for action, but all of you face the same ques- tions and the ever present challenge to find success in what you are doing. Many of you will lead; many more of you will be content to have the path selected for you. Your interest in keeping in touch with your classmates, your desire to find happiness, your working toward common goals, all seem to echo the traditional pioneer cry which was used to build our Western fron- tier, Goin ' my way? Led by Gary Campbell, C.I.F. top scorer, Whittier ' s spread formation proved too powerful for its opposition. While scoring 235 points, the Cards won nine straight ball games. Whittier was strong in every respect: in the line, the backfield, and the reserves. Coaches Mele and Fair can be credited with another successful season. The Redbird squad was eliminated in the C.I.F. playoffs only through the lack of a first down when it tied Glendale Hoover, 14 to 14. This book contains the events of the past year and the efforts of a hard-working, efficient editorial and photographic staff. Special consideration for their help in the production of this year ' s annual goes to Larry Locy for his Cardinal Redbird adaptations and Gail Quails for the division page art work. I also wish to express my gratitude to Mr. Hemmerling and his photography class and to Mr. Barton of Barton Studios for the fine pictures which fill the pages of our book. The excellent work done by the S. K. Smith Company in the manufacturing of the cover and by The Yearbook House, Monrovia, in the printing of the 1955 Cardinal has helped to make the book the biggest and best ever.
