Throughout the season our boys played hard and gave us some thrilling games, such as the game with the El Monte Lions with the score ending up 57-52 in favor of the Redbirds. Congratulations go to Wayne Kopren who flashed through all our games and was picked for the C. I. F. first team, one of the highest honors which can be accorded a prep basketball player. The 1949 track team had a good season this year. lt was a well rounded team, but lacked reserves. Coach Tom Phelan boasted a trio of good men in Russ Bonham, Jim Hiatt, and Ray Chavira. Bonham has broken records in the mile, Hiatt stars in the 100 and 220, and Chavira flashes in the 440. Gene Wineingar's Bees had a team that was good with Ken Schmutzer running the 100 and 220, Bill Keck the 1320, and Ed Ketchem running some of the events. The Cees, coached by Willard Morgan, had a crack team. Some of his star performers were Dick Nordstrom in the 100, George Tracy in the 100 and hurdles and Ed Creek in the pole vault. All through the year the coaches have put out good teams with the material they have had. f 5 4 K 44 The golf team ot Whrttler Hugh carved themselves a good record In competition this year lt IS certain that many future Pros are on the team Playing at the Hacienda Country Club and other links around Southern California the team was well noted by Southern Callfornla writers This year the team was coached by Earnest Hemmerllng his first year of bemg golf mentor EER 'Hn' -4MQ..,-N-zz, Wm.. WRITERS Splashing printers' ink, pecking type- writers, looming deadlines, rushing ev- erywhere to dig up that valuable infor- mation-just everyday occurrences in the iob of your hard-working C and W Staff. Under the capable leadership of Miss Florence Timmerman and Mr. Hank Litten, the reporters presented to you weekly a complete coverage of campus life. A glance around the quad any Wednesday afternoon would prove the importance of our weekly paper. Every- where could be seen various expressions as students read the hard-hitting editori- als, front-page news, Algernon, the sports page, and the ever-popular so- ciety columns. With Editor Elizabeth Linney and Managing Editor Shirley Garman as supervisors, the work within the hallowed walls of room 103 was carried on in the true newspaper style. News was gathered, interesting copy written, page lay-outs made, and the paper in its first form sent to the printer. The results from all this hard work were rewarding for when the Cardinal and White was distributed it truly was an outstanding paper-our school life re- flected in black and white. IXINUI-II. L. J, Gingles, ediforg C. Workman, M. Miller, J. Walsh, Fe. Benbow. OPENING SECTION FALL SECTION l Let us introduce to you the authors ot this year's best seller, the I949 Cardinal Annual. This group of hard- working historians has been laboring vigorously all year to create some- thing new and difterent for you, their critics. Gathering material all through the past year, they have endeavored to preserve all memorable events and happenings which have occurred throughout the past seasons. In the fall an industrious group took inter! esting pictures and made outstanding layouts to keep autumn occurrences always present. The winter group braved the storms to capture valu- able moments and activities taking place through the cooler months. Like new buds springing from the trees, the spring section shot up to preserve memorable episodes in their season. Finding and recording later events, the summer group centered their thoughts around making layouts and writing copy in a warm weather mood. After the accomplishments of the seasonal groups were put togeth- er with the work ofthe Opening Sec- tion, the volume took on the appear- ance of a finished and perfected best seller.
