Allen's capable assistants, Fred Burri, Hal Iones, Bill Payne, and Dan Tebbs proved invaluable as they aided their superior in formulat- ing strategy. Norm Haack, Virg Lemley and Dick Ferguson supplied the brains on the Held with their confident signal calling. Combining an offense geared for power and deception, Coach Allen primed his youngsters for years to come as was evidenced by the last three victorious contests. 118 In the opening game of the season against Santa Barbara, a goodly crowd of Poet rooters witnessed the 7-7 tie with the Gauchos. A 7-7 tie against powerful Santa Barbara in the opener kicked off the grid season. Victories over Arizona State and Davis, sandwiched around a heartbreaking 7-6 loss to rival Occi- dental gave the Poets a 3-1-1 record by mid season. Homecoming was gloomy for the Purple and Gold, as upstart Pomona blasted the local favorites 27-7 in a stunning upset. Decisive wins over Caltech and Redlands gave the Poets a 2-2 conference record and third place in the final SCIC standings. Giant-Killing Cal Poly out-lasted the Quakers in a surpris- ingly even game 31-14, the score being no indication of the real battle. Three successive Wins over tough foes climaxed the season. Oxy fought back to edge the frosh athletics zo-19, however. By season's end, Coach George Allen had co-ordinated the team into a well oiled machine, deep in reserve strength. With both George Sackman and Paul Chafe returning for tailback duties, the backfield seems fairly well cemented. Most serious losses were all-conference choices Ray McMullen, Phil Spivey and Bob Dunham. The Davis jump shot was usually good for two. REDLANDS TOURNAMENT Although defeated in the finals 42-36 by the highly touted Pasadena Nazarene Crusaders the Poet bas- keteers proved their preparedness for the season to come by decisive triumphs over Chapman and Pomona as well as by their hard fought loss. Sophomore Ioe Wolinutli, whose 32 points against the Sagehens put the roundballers in the finals, and All-tournament Ierry Iohncox were largely responsible for the Poet's fine showing. BEST GAME OF THE YEAR Four seniors, Ierry Iohncox, Ierry Hartman, Don Wells and Dick Norcross, among many others will long remember their team's breath-taking upset vic- tory over the N.A.I.B. bound Nazarenes from Pasadena in the seas0n's finale. A last glimpse at the scoreboard showed the Poets on top 63-61. Dick Pickup was a fixture at First base, Bob Bacon alternated between second and third. Paul Chafe covered the short patch. Don Wells, Brad Merrill and Carl Palmer were the three best outfielders. The stocky Arizonian was one-half of Coach Allen's top two on the mound, Captain Dick Ferge- son being the other. Powell was hitting .350 on the Hrst of May to lead the club. Captain Fergy and Powell used their ability and leadership to keep the team lighting despite a tough run of seasonal luck. Art Iessup hits the dirt at third base, as the Poet horsehiders come alive with a rally. A few loyal fans show up to support the team in a game on the Whittier Rock Pile. ' . I Y , I 1 -.l, ' 'f George Sackman, outfield Frank Scott, catcher B 2 gl Q32 Art Iessup, third base Del Westlund, outfield-second base Iohn Kramer, manager Whittier proved strong in spring spirit, as many athletes turned out to participate on the various squads. In won and lost percentage spring sports were not too outstanding. Baseball was no exception to the rule. Under the tutelage of George Allen, the horsehiders had won three, lost 15 and tied one by presstime, yet there still re- mained a solid chance for the SCIC crown. Most of the Poet defeats were due to shoddy fielding, lack of experience at key positions and a general run of poor luck.
