1111111 rm EAGLE EIGHTY-SEVEN INTRODUCTION 1-5 SENIOR’S WORLD 6-64 UNDERGRADUATES 65-117 ADMINISTRATION FACULTY 118-130 SPORTS 131-166 ACTIVITIES 167-192 ADVERTISEMENTS 193-224 — EAGLE ’87------------- “WE ARE MANY, WE ARE ONE” DEDICATION: CLARENCE HARRIS He is always there with a smile. He is the one so many kids turn to when their sky turns black, he is the one that always has the time. He is a friend, he is a confidant, he is steady and loving. If anyone could be called good with kids it is Clarence. He is consistent and fair. He is firm but fun. The students always knew that if their world seemed unbearable and grim, Clarence could lighten their load, brighten their day, and somehow make the pain go away. He drove the kids to school and he helped them move on with their lives. He fixed as many lives as he did broken machinery in school. His ti- tle should read; “Clarence Harris — Fixer of machin- ery and mender of kids, teacher of life and valued beyond words.” 3 Retirees Mrs. Fay Brewster On June 19, 1987, Mrs. Fay Brew- ster will retire after 17 years of dedi- cated service to the WPCS system as School Nurse and teacher in the Route 11 Building. Students and faculty always found a sympathetic ear and a reassuring voice through their times of illness and problems. The myriad of situa- tions and traumas she has dealt with boggles the mind. She was always steady under crisis, she was always soothing to the afflicted, and patient for the worried. Fay and her husband Paul plan on doing some traveling after her retire- ment. Mrs. Ruth Simpson Ruth Simpson retires after 27 years of service to the Elementary Office. At the beginning of her employment in 1960, she worked with Miss Nettie Clark until 1971. From then on she has worked with Mr. Michael Heller. Mrs. Simpson graduated from Whit- ney Point Central School in 1944. Af- ter graduation she was employed by the law firm of Merchant, Waite, and Waite in Binghampton, NY. She married Ed Simpson while he was in the service and has since raised their five children. After retirment, she plans to enjoy her 13 grandchildren and pursue her hobbies. Winters she will spend in Florida camping and fishing with her husband. Mrs. Ida Brannon In the past 31 years, students from all walks of life have been taught school subjects, and a little bit of love in the classroom of Mrs. Ida Brannon. Mrs. Brannon received a BS from Plattsburgh State Teachers College in Home Economics. She then went on to receive certification in elementary education. In 1948, Mrs. Brannon began her teaching career in Milford, NY, then in Oxford Academy. In Maryland, Florida, and Virginia she taught in the First Grade. Since Sept. 1968 Mrs. Brannon has been teaching at the First Grade level. She will cherish the memories of her teaching years. Mr. John Rugg Having served thirty-three years in education as a teacher and administra- tor, Mr. Rugg has chosen to retire at the end of the 1986-1987 school year. Mr. Rugg’s teaching career began in Williamson Central School, after receiv- ing his BS and Masters degree from Amherst Colelge and Syracuse University. In Williamson he was a secondary science teacher for three years, then moved on to Watervllle, NY as an Assistant Junior-Senior High School Princi- pal for an additional three years. In 1960 he left there to become Principal, grades 7-12, at Whitney Point. Mr. Rugg has been very active over the years in promoting many programs within the District and has participated in numerous staff programs, designed to enhance the overall educational opportunities for students. Among Mr. Rugg’s outside activities are the Rotary International where he took leadership roles in several activities. He also served as Boy Scout Master for many years as well. Singing has always been a favorite outside activity with participating in the Church choir and several lead roles in community musi- cals. He hopes to travel and maybe do some limited work in education. Teacher of the Year — 1986-1987 Mrs. Pearl Yarrington Mrs. Pearl Yarrington as “Teacher of the Year ” has performed outstandingly with her students for the past twenty years. During this time she has served the school district’s children In many different ways. She began in 1967 as teacher of the special education classes in the Junior High. Two years later she was appointed School Nurse Teacher with primary duty being health teacher to the 7th and 8th grades. She continues to serve In this position as well as help In the Health Office for 8-9. She has exhibited high professional standards through continual specialized training In such areas as value clarification, death and dying, and drug abuse. A very successful unit of study on Family Life Education was developed by Mrs. Yarrington twelve years ago. It was one of the programs in the Southern Tier schools to provide students knowledge In this important area. She has found time to serve as an active member of her local emergency squad and it was through this voluntary activity that she was honored several years ago as “Outstanding Woman” In Broome County. In many ways Pearl Yarrington demonstrates all the qualities of “Teacher of the Year” and we are pleased to recognize her at this time. 5 Robert Ames Jennifer Lynn barrows “Jenny Future Plans: College — Delhi School Activities: Yearbook — assistant editor, Latin club. Lidja, who was from Austria, stayed with the Starner family which had to endure her early departure for home at mid-year. Andert came from the Philippines and stayed with many lucky families in the Whitney Point area. All Join the Yearbook staff in wishing Andert, Monica, and Lidja a fond farewell. Junior Advisor Mrs. Stone and Senior Advisor Mrs. Silvanic along with co- worker Mr. Minacci pulled off their usual magic. The glitter and the images will remain in the minds of all that shared this magic night. Staged at the Hathaway House in McGraw the evening was filled with music and memories. The 1987 Prom joined the long list of great W.P. evenings. Queen Amy and King Glenn with their court: Sheri Traux, Mike Lynch. Kevin Hand. Lisa Walls. Judy Weir, Brian Thelman, Christy Croft, and Jamie Bigelow 35 the playing of the Na- tional Anthem, and the invocation given by Fa- ther O’Hanlon. Follow- ing the invocation, Mark Mathewson, Tiin Poyer, Ellen Taylor, Mi- chelle Love, and Jenni- fer Kemp, sang the love theme from “St. El- mos’s Fire,” which they dedicated to their fellow classmates. Speeches wrere given by class president Christy Croft, valedictorian Judy Weir, salutatorian Kathy Nabinger, and exchange student Monica Oficialde- qui. Awards were presented to many members of the class by Mr. Richard Smith and Mr. John Storer. After the awards, diplomas were awarded to the 113 students by board members, Mr. Mel Bowman and Miss Marie Scott. The ceremony concluded with the benediction and the recessional to “Finale Jubi- lante.” Feelings of Joy and sadness were in abun- dance at the June 19th, 1987, Graduation Com- mencement ceremony. The service began with the traditional receiv- ing of the graduates, The rain drops are gently tickling the windows as I look out at the cold grey sky. This town seems so lonely and forsaken; the hills echo the feeling standing there so silently at a loss for words. I hear footsteps in the hall behind me and papers rustling rest- lessly in the room. It gives me a “hom- ey” feeling, and so I reflect from my senior year to all the years preceding. I can remember so vividly the three buildings that have shaped our lives, in which we dreamed, loved, cried, hurt, smiled, learned, and, of course, hoped. All the way from kindergarten when we wanted to be a fireman or a police person, ’til we wanted to be a doctor, or a scientist. This place was our window to the world and it gave us ideas with what to do with life. It’s here that we found what kind of guy or girl we want to marry or maybe found that we didn’t want to. There are Just so many things incapable of de- scription. But I’m sure the other stu- dents will know what I’m feeling, and I know that no matter if the rest of our lives are cloudy, or we miss our friends, or what have you, that these thirteen years will be the silver lining on our shining star. And so we go on dreaming, loving, crying, hurting, smiling, learning, and hoping; and looking back to when the sun shone or when the rain pit- ter-pattered on the windows. We will think of this school, and miss it. Dream on. 41 Last Will and Testament We, the class of 1987, never having been accused of being in sound mind and body do hereby leave the following bequests: I, GLENN MEACHAM, hereby bequeath one Jar of turtle wax to Mr. Bochniak so he can buff and style his hair. Becca Hyde and Rick Solomon were voted Sweetheart Cou- ple by the attendants of the dance. Other candi- dates included Shannon Wells and Brian Thele- man, Amy Morse and Robert Quick, Tonya Tor- rence and Kevin Hand, and Mary Jo Eldred and Henry Arciolla. 52 53 HALLOWEEN PARADE 54 55 56 57 WE ARE MANY WE ARE ONE It is the firemen who protect, the parents who raise, the teachers who teach, and so many more who make us what we are. Our community has diverse elements, vary- ing roots, and different problems but a universal desire for our children. We are many but we are one in our goal of excellence in education. We go many ways but we come together in the quest for knowledge. This book attempts to reflect moments in time in a year that has passed. Its contents are for all who have contributed, all who have given, and for all who we have tried to reflect. 58 59 60 61 UNDERCLASSES 65 66 Eleventh Grade Mark Abbey Robert Abbey Cheryl Adams Richard Allen Krista Ayers Martin Bajema Michael Baker Kelli Ballard Tina Ballard Paul Bldwell Jeffrey Bridges Thomas Brown Theresa Burghardt Joseph Burt Denise Cargln Paula Carpenter Jack Clark Michael Collins Glenn Cooper Kelly Cornell Karen Crowe Kim David Michael Davis Brett Dean 67 Darlene Dean Michael DePue Julie Donnelly Cheryl Doolittle Laura Driscoll Robert Driscoll Julann Ellis Shawn Fahey Mary Fletcher Dena Gannon David Gates Michael Gazovic Eileen Gilmore Richard Glezen Katrina Green Patrick Hall Kimberly Hand Pamela Hatfield Tammy Hawkes Albert Heath Randall Hedges Ronald Henderson Kevin Holbrook Kathryn Kelly 68 Mary Kelly Fred Kicsak Becky Kelsey Earl Kimble Mark Kopenski Jennifer Lambalse Scott Lee Tammy Lethbridge Carolyn Lowe Joann Malm strom William Martin Daren Marye Brent Maslln Dana McPeek Jamie Metz Kevin Mills Michael Miner Bonnie Morton Penny Moscrip John Mullen Earl Newhart Stephanie Oakley Timothy Peters Robby Peterson 69 James Petrie Mary Pfcll Daniel Phillips Kevin Phillips Matthew Poyer Tersia Pratt Jennifer Presley Michelle Preston John Prindle Mark Quail Yvonne Quail Robert Quick .Julie Raubacher Kevin Robinson Ellen Roe Holly Ryan Paul Schmeiske Michael Shearer Susan Sessions John Short Steve Shove Daniel Shurtleff Lynette Slack Brenda Smith 70 Stephen Smith Ricardo Soloman David Stastny Michelle Stolarcyk Shannon Swan Connie Tarrien John Taylor .Jason Termin Jessica Tracy Stephen Treiber Carrie Walker Daniel Warner Jeffrey Wilcox Chandra Wolfram Vicki Womack Jason Wright Denise Kuhr Theresa Han yon 71 Tenth Grade Adam Arnold Robert Austin Nina Autio Annie Baer Amy Bailey Sharon Bajcma Wayne Bajema Brad Baldwin John Ballard Michael Ballard Rhonda Banner Jason Baumgart Mark Baxter Eric Bradley Kris Brady Brendan Brigham Lee Ann Bryant Wendy Burlison Barbara Can niff Ralph Canniff Alan Clark Charles Clute Lisa Collins Christine Coons 72 Boyd Corliss James Crane Dennis Graver Amy Crosby Jason Denton Kelly Driscoll John DuBravec Rhys Earl Jodie Eggleston Kacy Ellerson Shane Ellerson William Ellerson Keith Elmore Brennan Fahey Tim Fenton Matt Fctterman Danny Ford Bud Fralick Michele Frantellizzi William Freeman William Frobe Michael Gadzlala Shelly Gerst David Glezen 73 Loren Glezen Stucic Graves Chris Green Jam! It all started at a yearbook workshop at St. Bonaventure University In August and was “put to bed” In early July. It Is an enormous task, a consuming chore, and, at times, one that never seems to end. The staff, due to the stress, was like a family. It went through many moods and changes, but all the way It was one with each other and one to produce as good a book as It could. The staff, also wrote about a myriad of sub- jects In the local papers. All told it was a very good group and a very good year. 170 171 NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Current Members Row 1: Judy Weir, Rebecca Canova, Kathy Nabinger, Amy Morse. On May 13 thru 16th the Whitney Point French Club took a trip to Que- bec, Canada. Thirty-six students went on the trip and they were ac- companied by Mr. and Mrs. Freeh and Mr. Defeo. For two and one half days the group toured the old city, saw many historical sights, got a chance to speak French and try foreign foods. The students enjoyed wondering the city, marveling at the sights, and shopping. The European flavor of the city was a dominant factor in the tour. The beautiful weather added to the trip’s pleasures. The French Club is indebted to Mrs. Freeh’s great efforts in plan- ning the trip. The Quebec excursion is one of the highlights of the Whit- ney Point school year. 180 The Chateau Frantenac The group at Ste-Anne De Beaupre To the Old City Row 1: Mr. Wagner, Carrie Harvey, Denise Cargin, Lisa Lewis, Krisi Harvey, Mary Struble, Paula Hill, Marta Kit, Shlvaun McGoff. This year's chorus review used the theme of movie and TV songs. Mrs. Knapp struggled long and hard to mold the student run Cabaret into the success it was. The high- light and finale of the performance was the Disney spectacular, it included songs from “Mary Poppins”, “Song of the South”, “Pete’s Dragon”, and the “Mickey Mouse March”. Comedy relief was provided by the parody of TV commercials. The chorus, one and all, provided a marvelous evening of mu- sical entertainment to all who attended. 187 ELEMENTARY STOCKMARKET Row 1: Jennifer Slyker, Emily Orzel, Rachael Trask, Erin Orzel, Mr. Steger, Jason Somers, Jared Shoemaker. We sent some of our stu- dents to the jungels of Guatemala and viewed Mayan temples and studied coral reefs In Belize. Our learning included the sights and sounds of foreign shores and the warm shelled sands of tropical is- lands. We learned to meet new and interesting people and to come to appreciate their worth. When we traveled beyond our world we came to appreciate our life all the more. Our education this year was not always confined to four walls and dusty chalkboards. The world around us was our instructor as well. Our community, our pageants, and our life experience were true teachers. Our world widened and grew as we grew. It has been an informative and wonderful year. 190 Teachers this year were pools, parents, and pagents. We learned to swim, to save ourselves, and to have fun with the serious. Involvement with the Commuinty Chorus and vis- iting Color Guards enlarged our horizons. In the Adams build- ing we showed grandmother and grandfather how we study. Outside the Adams building we watched with facination as ma- chines dug up our playground and changed our world. We col- lectged food to help the needy. From all these experiences we grew. 191 192 193 PARTING 194 SHOTS •• Vklig 195 Thank You To All Our Advertisers Please Support Our Advertisers DELMAR PUBLISHING CO.
