Text from Pages 1 - 216 of the 1986 volume:

Spirit Spirit is a feeling that fills the air. Whitney Point can say with pride that it has Spirit. Go to any sporting event, play, or concert and you will feel the spirit in the air. However, it is not limited to “special events”. Walk down the halls of either the Junior or Senior Highs during class changes and you will feel and hear spirit from all sides. The art exhibits by the art classes reflect the talent and atmo- sphere here at Whitney Point. The grueling sports practices show students and coaches working hard but also having some laughs. Spirit can be seen at the C.E.A. building. The children are always ready to try new things. At the Junior High, the group spirit grows. Everybody pulls together for a common goal, such as a dance or con- cert. The spirit at the Senior High shows itself in two ways: while everyone is still working together, they are now becom- ing their own individuals. The strength of individuals and the group togetherness coexist at Whitney Point to give it an un- deniable vitality. Every graduate will always share a sense of Whitney Point spirit wherever he or she may go. Ben Driscoll received the first annual David Nicholson Memorial Award. It is given to the Cross Country member who most exempli- fies team spirit. Ben would like to express his slncerest thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Nicholson and Mr. Mackey. 2 WHITNEY POINT central school WHITNEY POINT,NEW YORK 136 62 VOLUME 46 TABLE OF CONTENTS : INTRODUCTIONI 1 - 6 UNDERCLRB5MEN 7-58 SENIORS 51-17 HOMECDMING-HRLLOWEEN n - io3 CflNDIDS 104-112 RCTIVITIES 113 - 141 SPORTS 142 - 1 FRCULTY,RDMINI5TRRT|DN RND 5TRFF 167-ISO RDVERTI5eMENT5 1S1 - 208 Dedication Edward Bochniak “Helping young people, not in a dramatic fashion, but little by little throughout the years.” sums up Mr. Edward Bochniak’s basic approach to teaching. His dependability and resourcefulness have aided hundreds of students in his career at Whitney Point Senior High School. Mr. Bochniak began his work in public school education after serving in the military and teaching at the U.S. Air Force Academy. He received his undergraduate degree at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. and his Master’s Degree from SUNY Cortland. Believing that he had an obligation to assist in the aca- demic and social development of youth, Mr. Bochniak found that this duty “turned into a privilege.” He still enjoys the “intellectual atmosphere” of schools and believes he has much to contribute to student growth. His students, now and in the past, would certainly agree. The 1962-63 school year marked Mr. Bochniak’s arrival at Whitney Point, where he has been teaching senior high school English and occasionally social studies ever since. He has remained here for two major reasons: the enjoyment in his work and the camaraderie of his associates. Besides his effective work in the classroom, Mr. Bochniak has also coached Junior High, Junior Varsity, and Varsity football and has been a class advisor and drama coach. In his private life, Mr. Bochniak likes long-distance walk- ing for his physical health and reading for his mental health. He especially enjoys Western non-fiction and World War II Air Force stories. This year’s Eagle yearbook staff proudly dedicates the 1986 edition to Mr. Edward Bochniak — our friend and mentor. 4 Joseph Cooper 1985-86 Teacher of the Year Outstanding motivator, outstand- ing creative teacher, outstanding dedication to his students and to his art. In summation: truly outstand- ing. Joe, who has taught Art at Whit- ney Point for 23 of his 27 teaching years, attended Edinboro State Uni- versity, Edinboro, Pa. and S.U.N.Y. at New Paltz, N.Y. Due to the influ- ence of two very good teachers in his high school years, Joe decided to work with high school students. After three years’ teaching at Towanda, Pa. he began a career at Whitney Point. Having taught stu- dents from levels kindergarten through grade 12, teachers and stu- dents cite Joe’s professionalism, good humor, and articulate skills. A highlight for all occurs annually each June as the major student art exhib- it is the showcase for differing tech- niques, mediums, and skills ac- quired in Mr. Cooper’s art classes. When informed he was the recipient of the 1985-86 Teacher of the Year award, an honorary accolade from his peers, Joe expressed, “Sur- prise!” Although Joe values the friend- ships he has built with students and staff, he is somberly reflective. Joe states, “a greater emphasis on coop- eration and mutual respect between staff and administration would greatly improve the teaching and learning environment in “our school.” Painting and sculpture are two hobbies Joe enjoys. Upon retire- ment, traveling and spending win- ters on the beach appeal to him. 5 Retirees After twenty-seven years of Guidance in the Whitney Point school system, Pauline Quick will be opting for a much looked forward to retirement as of June, 1986. Mrs. Quick earned her B.S. degree at Johnson State Teacher’s College in Vermont in 1953 and her Masters degree from Springfield College in Massachusetts in 1959. Mrs. Quick taught four years in Vermont, one year at a private school in Queens, N.Y. and then was hired by Caryl E. Adams to take over the Guidance Department at Whitney Point in 1959. In the interim she did some graduate work at Cornell, obtained a G.E. fellowship at Syracuse and took other courses at N.Y.U. During the years here at Whitney Point, she has run the gamut of Guidance Services, having worked not only with Senior High students, but also Junior High and grades three thru six; she has been chairman of Special Education for four years and has co-chaired the Committee on the Handi- capped for two years. Among her outside activities, she is a past member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary in Lisle, belonged to the Eastern Star, is still a member of the Upper Lisle Grange and served as president of the Binbhamton Area Soroptomist Club as well as district director a few years back. We wish Mrs. Quick a most happy and lenghty retire- ment. Prior to 1963, Mary Margaret DeYoe was most content to remain at her home caring for her two sons and one daughter. Additionally, she served as her husband Ed’s fuel distributorship secretary. Her spare time was devot- ed to her interest in painting, giving piano lessons, and participation in various organizations. In September 1963, Mrs. DeYoe began her teaching career, serving as a Kindergarten teacher in the Mara- thon Central School. September, 1965, saw Mary Margaret employed in Whitney Point as a First Grade teacher, a position she held for the next five years. Seeking additional challenge, Mrs. DeYoe next set her sights on acquiring certification as a Reading Teacher. She soon took this new certification and tackled the de- manding position of Junior High Reading Teacher from 1969-77. Since 1977, Mary Margaret resumed her Elementary teaching and has served the district as a Fourth Grade Teacher. Upon retirement, Mrs. DeYoe plans to travel with her husband and spend more time on her hobbies of painting and music. The Elementary Staff salutes Mrs. DeYoe for a job well done. 6 7 Kindergarten Mrs. McCray Mrs. McCray Brendan Ballard Barbara Bush Steven Canniff Shawn Champion Mark Goodrich Brian Haight Christina The musical involved over two hundred people and consumed thousands of hours. What these spirited people produced was a marvelous collage of Broadway’s best. The musical taps a long and deep vein of the talent that runs through the diverse Whitney Point community. Packed houses are now the norm and since their act is together why not take it on the road? 136 Annie In a girls home for orphans during the depression, the girls find themselves overworked and often mistreated by the homes matron, Miss Hanigan. When things seem gloomy for the girls, one orphan named Annie pulls them through by sharing with them her hope for tomorrow. 137 Fiddler on the Roof Fiddler on the Roof portrays a poor Jewish farmer who struggles to make ends meet, making a choice of follow- ing the old traditions or to follow the ways of the outside world. His daughter wants to marry someone other than the family has arranged. 1776 1776 is a comedy about John Adams who tries to persuade the 2nd Continental Congress to sign the Decla- ration of Independence while their only worries are whether or not the windows should remain closed in the stifling heat or open them and try to cope with the flies. 138 Oklahoma In 1907, as the officials of Oklahoma territory work to become a state, Curly, a young rancher, worked to win over a stubborn farm girl named Laurie, who is convinced that she hates him. When news reaches them of Oklaho- ma’s upcoming statehood. Curly has managed to win Laurie’s heart and they can be married in a brand new state. Music Man The town of River City finds something new to talk about as their favorite object for gossip, Marrian the Librarian, is attracted to a new traveling salesman. But they are not aware of the fact that this man who seems to be an angel from heaven is actually a con-man. When the Music Man goes to leave the town with the peoples mon- ey Marrian stops him, and because of her love he stays on and gives the town their band. 139 Class Notables Best All Around — Jeff Farr, Lynn Zegler ' 140 Best Looking Genia Ross. Besides inexperience, the team was ham- pered by injuries. Only 2 games saw all 10 players able to compete. Sev- eral other games the team had only 8 players able to play. A lack of height for rebounding also hurt the squad. In spite of these difficulties the team played hard and had a de- sire to fight back. The team lost 6 games by less than 10 points (4 of those by 3 points or less). The team beat Greene in overtime even though they trailed by 16 points in the 3rd quarter and beat Chenango Forks in double overtime! The Eagle basketball team en- joyed a very successful season as they carried on the tradition of Whit- ney Point Basketball. The Eagles finished with a 16-6 won-lost record as they advanced to the semi-finals of the Section IV Class C Tourna- ment. The Eagles lost a disappoint- ing one point decision to the eventu- al Class C Champion Odessa Mon- tour. The Eagles were runner-up at the annual Christmas Holiday Tour- nament at Cortland State. Lisa McCulloch and 3 other girls were named to the All-Tourney team. Their status as undefeated League Champs made them a tar- get for all teams, and late in the season they fell to Windsor and Greene. Despite the loss the Eagles won the Sus. West title and went on to Sectionals where they were de- nied a trip to the Arena by 4 points. A strong, well-balanced, and com- petitive squad will return for next year. 153 7th Grade Boy’s Basketball The 8th Grade Boys Basketball Team finished 8 3.
