EAGLE COMMUNITY SERVICE' Whitney Point Central School Whitney Point, New York 13862 (607) 692-3222 Volume Forty-Five Community Service . . . Whitney Point Central School has had a yearbook for more than four dec- ades. With each and every year, there has been a new theme. Each year it be- comes harder and harder for the staff to think of a new and exciting theme. After jogging many ideas around we have chosen Community Service. The staff feels that with this theme the yearbook will appeal to more mem- bers of the community and become a book enjoyed by all. The people of this com- munity deal with each oth- er in face-to-face contacts, they have common prob- lems and they cooperate in various activities. The communities support and interest is vital for an orga- nization such as the year- book to continue its growth from year to year. We are very fortunate to have the services of Rotary, the various booster clubs, and the many contribu- tions of local business peo- ple and the Whitney Point Central School faculty and administration. The most important link in connect- ing people to form a com- munity is service. We, the students of WPCS will move on. Some of us will leave and some of us will stay. All of the goodness that comes to us in our ca- reers will be, in part, be- cause of the way that you, the people of our commu- nity, have served us. Thank you. By: Beth Emerson and Bri- an Driscoll 2 Dedication We, the yearbook staff, proudly dedicate the Eagle '85 to Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Gregg. The theme this year is Community Service and Marv and Alice Gregg have been a very big part of the Whitney Point Community since moving here to open Gregg's Big M twenty-one years ago. Mr. Gregg started in the grocery business when he was 15 years old as a stock clerk for Floyd Paggett, a grocerer, in Oakdale where Mr. Gregg grew up. When the Greggs opened the Big M in Whitney Point, they built their home on Keibel Road, where they still reside. The Gregg's have three children. Sherry, Holly, and Lance. Mr. and Mrs. Gregg have opened two oth- er grocery stores, one in Marathon, and one in Maine as well as the Whitney Point Variety Store. The Gregg's have shown their community spirit in many ways. They have been very gener- ous to the many school teams and organizations. They have employed many of our students, both male and female, in their store and have been very cooperative in working their schedules around the students school activities. Mr. and Mrs. Gregg have also been very generous to many families and community members in their time of need, this support is done quietly and is not often known by anyone other than the peo- ple involved. A community that works is one filled with people willing to pull together for the common good. Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Gregg have shown that they care about the Whitney Point Community. The Eagle '85 salutes them for their years of Community Service. A NATION Teacher Of The Year Nancy Nitto, Whitney Point's 1984-85 teacher of the year, is a true definition of the word teacher. Nancy is a caring person committed to the total growth of each child. Nancy began her college education at Corning Community Col- lege. While working at a Montessori School in Corning, she decided that working with chil- dren would be her career choice. She continued her education at SUNY, Cortland, receiving her Bachelor's Degree in 1973. She received her Master's Degree from SUNY, Oneonta in 1978. Nancy has been teaching third grade in Whit- ney Point since 1973. Nancy goes beyond the call of duty and gives an enormous part of her- self to each and every student. Her dedication to her career makes her an excellent choice for Teacher of the Year. Congratulations Mrs. Nancy Nitto. I In Memory Of . . . Dr. Glenn W. Tymeson Sr., an outstanding practi- tioner and professor of family medicine and a sensi- tive, selfless and dedicated public servant, died May 5, 1984 while fishing with friends in Oswego. He is survived by his wife June, and six children. Dr. Tyme- son was a graduate of Jefferson Medical College. He was United Health Services Associate Director of the Family Practice Residency, a member of the Medical Staff at United Health Service, Clinical Assistant Pro- fessor of family Medicine at Upstate Medical Center, Broome County Coroner for 35 years, a practicing family Physician, and a 1984 candidate for Family Physician of the year (an award he already received in 1958). He also received the Family Practice Fellow- ship award in 1972, the Community Physician Recog- nition day award in 1975, the Family Practice Resi- dents' Recognition Award for Physician Teacher in 1975 and 1982. Dr. Tymeson held all these positions, and won these awards, but, if you asked the local people what they remember about Dr. Tymeson, most would say his warmth, his wit, his gentleness, his willingness to always be there when he was needed. Whether he was assuring a young mother that all was going well in the delivery room, treating a sick child in his office, or consoling a family that had lost a loved one. Dr. T. always gave more than a medical opinion, he gave a part of himself. He served our area since 1948 as Doctor and community friend. A famil- iar sight on a Saturday afternoon would be Dr. Tyme- son strolling up and down the sidelines, enjoying the game, ready to serve both teams if needed. On Sat. September 27, 1984 the community dedicated the Whitney Point Athletic Fields in his memory, and named them The Glenn W. Tymeson Fields, Dr. Glenn W. Tymeson Sr., a loving husband and father, a dedi- cated doctor and teacher, a loyal friend to all he touched ... a truly Great Man. l-lull v . i uau. j. cvutlujl-: Juy : i v i ;y. .j.i' v i.m.it i ■ 11 ■: y t.iv ij .n.v uv. Mr. Riley not only drives the bus to and from, he stays to cheer on the athletes. His words of encouragement for each athlete can be heard whether in the gym or one mile out on the cross country course! Competi- tion at Whitney Point, the soccer team surprised nearly everyone by compiling a winning record. Top moments of the season included two 1-0 wins over Chenango Val- ley, a come-from-behind win over Homer, and outstanding upset wins over Marathon and Maine Endwell. The team steadily im- proved as the season progressed, losing only twice in the last nine matches. 120 Varsity Football The 1984 Golden Eagles foot- ball program made great strides. The season high- lights featured the Memorial Dedication for Dr. Tymeson, an exciting game with Chen- ango Forks, and a big win at Sidney, our first league win in five years. The season end- ed by defeating a highly tout- ed Tri-Valley squad that boasted a 7-1 record and was state ranked. The team dem- onstrated all the qualities of champions. They were spirit- ed, highly motivated and had a never say die attitude. FIRST ROW: Eric Birdsall, Matt Sprague. Mark Driscoll. Four dif- ferent players started at Quarterback, and there were five different combinations of running backs. Although this year's team record was disappointing, many fresh- man played a lot of football, which means next year's team should have a good nu- cleus of experienced sopho- mores to go along with a fine 8th grade team. Varsity Field Hockey 122 With only three returning players, this year's varsity team was com- prised of a number of young ath- letes. The team posted a .500 sea- son record and qualified for sec- tionals, which we had failed to do with more experienced teams, in the past five years. The three de- parting seniors will be missed by their teammates but we hope that we have begun again to build the winning spirit for which Whitney Point is famous. Field Hockey The Junior Varsity Field Hockey team had a very successful 1984 season while playing a competi- tive league schedule. In spite of the fact that the players were young (two soph., two freshmen, and two eighth graders) and had no previous junior varsity experi- ence, the team compiled a 6-3-2 re- cord. FIRST ROW: Karen Crowe, Lisa Prindle, Kim David, Jamie Metz, Tersia Pratt, Kathy Kelly, Stephanie Oakley, Ellen Roe SECOND ROW: Terri Burghardt, Julie Donnelly, Wendy Stolarcyk, Julie Raubacher, Katie Green, Kelly Hall, Judy Weir, Cindy Pratt, (manager), Mary Green, Coach Boys' Varsity Cross Country The Boys' Cross Country Team enjoyed a very suc- cessful season going undefeated in dual meets, winning 6 out of 7 invitationals and going on to win the Susquenango Association Championship. They then went on to take a very close 2nd in the Section IV Championship, sending three of its top runners to compete in the N.Y.S. Intersectional Meet. Losing three seniors that have been with the sport since 7th grade, the team had a very good foundation and many good runners coming up to help continue the winning tradition. Then, after an upset victory over Chenango Valley in the Holiday Christmas Tournament they climbed to first place in the Susquenango League with eight straight vic- tories. The Eagles showed a tre- mendous amount of courage and team play in producing one of the most surprising turn- arounds in Whitney Point Bas- ketball tradition. Defense was the contributing factor in this successful round-ball season as the Eagles held their opponents an average of 51 points per game — leading the Susquen- ango League in this department. Departing seniors from the 1984-85 squad are David Burgh- ardt, Mark Driscoll, Tom Hal- loran, and Steve Tambascio. 127 J.V. Mr. DeFeo is responsible for our beautiful homecoming pictures as well as many of our candids. Thanks again Mr. DeFeo we couldn't do it without you! Creating a yearbook is a very involved process. The students and advisors must be salesmen, fundraisers, artists, layout and design creators, writers, photogra- phers, typists and HARD WORKERS! This year we have tried to project the feeling of Community throughout the book. A special thank you should go to Brian Driscoll who is responsible for our cover de- sign and most of the art work you see throughout the book, as well as almost all of the layout designs, some photography, and a little typing. Brian's dedication to the Eagle '85 was outstanding! We also thank Mrs. Kathy Doherty for her calligraphy contribution and Mrs. Donna Silvanic for her hard work in helping us put the book together. 146 Sr. High Student Council • ..• • |MV • • . ••• V .f M‘4 •- • ., .• ‘I I ! . •!. ♦ • 1 . hH l V v •44. Apples now grow where pine trees stood. And slow cows graze instead of deer. Where Indian fires once raised their smoke The chimneys of a farmhouse stand. And cocks crow barnyard challenges To dawns that once saw savage land. The axe, the plow, the binding wall. By these the wilderness is tamed. By these the white man's will is wrought. The rivers bridged, the new towns named. Elizabeth Coatsworth
